Some Nifty NBA.com Stat and Video Features

The NBA now has several features related to its stat pages that Pounders should find interesting. These are accessible by clicking on a stat entry that shows an underline when you mouse over. For an example, I have chosen Tiago Splitter’s shooting from his first regular season game with the Hawks. The statistics are season to date but, of course, contain only one game. While available from several kinds of NBA stat pages, I chose Splitter’s personal one. I collected images, but, unfortunately, decided not to include them because I was unclear of my or PtR's rights for using the images.

I clicked on FGA (Field Goals Attempted) and a small popup menu appeared allowing the selection of Video of the attempts, a Shotchart of them, or a Movement-tracking graphic of the action.

When I clicked on Video, and a popup window appeared. On the right were thumbnail images of the instances of shot attempts. If you do nothing, they play one after another – with maybe an advertisement to begin.

Next, I tried Shotchart and the usual half court map appeared with each area having Splitter's attempts, makes, percentage, distribution, and a normative percentage.

Finally, I selected Movement and an animation appeared for each attempt.

I am not sure exactly how long the delay is after the game before they are available, but I viewed these early the next morning after the game.

While Splitter did not have a big night, I could see the potential. For example, imagine how one could later the season see all the shot attempts, shot makes, rebounds, assists, etc. over multiple games. I urge those who are interested to try the feature.

In addition, readers may also find the dashboards interesting (under TRACKING at right end of set of menus near top of numbers). I particularly like the Defensive Dashboard.
