Could Austin Daye fill Bonner's Roster Spot?

He's rather unknown in the basketball world but he may just be the next key roll player for the Spurs in their 2014-2015 campaign as they try to repeat as NBA Champions.

Austin Daye was acquired by the Spurs in a mid season trade last year which dealt Nando de Colo to Toronto and landed Daye in the Lone Star State. Although he didn't get much playing time, he had some shining moments when he did get on the court including a 22 pt, 6 rb, 2 st, and 2 block performance in 29 minutes against the Sixers.

Daye went 8-13 from the field and 6-10 from downtown. Granted, it was against the, obviously tanking, Sixers but he showed his value as a sharp-shooter nonetheless.

Bonner and Daye have one similarity, they can shoot the three. Other than that, Austin Daye seems to out match Bonner in every other aspect of the game. He can handle the ball (and not look like a JV bench warmer), he can play defense, and showed he can run the floor in transition. At $947k, he's a great value for a team trying to resign key players like Patty Mills and Boris Diaw. With only about $10 million in cap space, Bonner will more than likely be a free agency casualty this off season.

Austin Daye could be a terrific piece moving forward for the Spurs and its hard to believe, but it might actually make the 2014 NBA Champs even better.
