Spurs sign Damion James for the remainder of the season

The 26-year-old forward will take the last available roster spot for the rest of the year

The Spurs liked what they saw from Damion James in practice, apparently:

SAN ANTONIO (April 13, 2014) - The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed forward Damion James for the remainder of the 2013-14 season.

James was originally signed by the Spurs to a 10-day contract on April 3. He has appeared in three games for the Silver and Black, averaging 1.0 rebounds in 3.3 minutes.

Prior to joining the Spurs, James most recently played in the NBA D-League in 2013-14 for the Texas Legends and the Bakersfield Jam. In 85 career D-League games, the University of Texas product averaged 16.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.04 blocks in 31.8 minutes.

Drafted 24th overall in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, James was sent to the Brooklyn Nets in a draft-night trade. In three seasons with the Nets (2010-13), he appeared in 34 total games and averaged 4.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 16.9 minutes.

With this signing the Spurs' roster stands at 15, the maximum allowed. It's hard to imagine a situation in which James sees the floor in the playoffs but the Spurs needed a nominal back-up small forward and James will do.

We have no further details on the contract but I wouldn't be surprised to see it include a non-guaranteed second year. The Spurs usually do that in order to secure the services of players they like for the following training camp.  And James' combination of size and defensive ability could merit a longer look.

Expect James to get some minutes in the next couple of games if Pop decides to rest players. He will likely be in the inactive list once the playoffs roll around.
