Now that we are only days away from the playoffs, I thought it would be nice to give you an update on all players the Spurs own the rights to. These kids are a long way from being in a spurs jersey but its nice to see how they are coming along.
Davis Bertans - Bertans is a 21 year old 6'10* SF that currently plays for Partizan. In March, he returned back to action from an ACL injury . On his first game back from a 280 day rehab, he put up 20 points in 19 minutes. His injury did not look like it hindered his game at all. Bertans has participated in 7 games since his return. In those games, he is shooting 43.6% (17/39) from behind the 3 point line and averaging 13 points in 18 minutes. He excels on catch-and-shoot situations and is not afraid to drive to the rim. Marcus Denmon - Denmon was the 59th pick in the 2012 draft. The Spurs immediately sent him to play for Elan Chalon in France where he broke his foot in the season opener. He quickly recovered and ranked among the top scorers for the club. He now plays for Tofus in Turkey. He shows promise, but there is a slight problem with Denmon's game. He has a Gary Neal type mentality. He can shoot and will shoot. This season, he averaged 35.1% (53/151) from behind the arc. His numbers are a lot better from inside the 3 point line. This is where he shot 42.0% (58/138). Denmon's shot selection can be questionable at times. If he does land back in San Antonio, I don't see him being much more than a role player. Deshaun Thomas - Thomas is a 6'7 SF that plays for Nanterre. He has shown incredible promise this season. He has established himself as one of the best scoring small forwards in the LNB Pro A league. Throughout the 45 games Thomas has played this season, he is shooting 37.5% (77/202) from the 3 point line and has a 2FGP of 52.6% (123/234). He is undoubtedly a good scorer but coming out of college, he had problems on defense. According to a report, he is working hard to improve that part of his game. Thomas looks like he would be a great backup for Kawhi. He would be able to continue scoring production and if he improved his defense, would be able to alleviate some pressure against top tier scorers. For more info on Deshaun Thomas, please go here
Livio Jean-Charles - 6'8 PF - ACL - Out for season. For what its worth, his McDonald game numbers were crazy.
Ryan Richards - Richards is 7'0 PF/C that plays for (whoever wants him to take up roster space) Greece. He has bounced around several teams in the Euroleague. Each time it seemed like for the same reason. "Although Richards is smooth, athletic & skilled big man, he shows poor spacing, basketball IQ & decision-making process. DNP in last games." With his latest stint in Greece -against slightly better competition than his last teams- he is averaging 9 points in 21 minutes. He is also trying his hand at knocking down 3's (30.9%). In my opinion, Richards would benefit most if he signed to our D-League affiliate. Richards needs to improve on his game vastly before he can think about donning a Spurs jersey. Adam Hanga - Now we are left with the beast that is Adam Hanga. In case you missed it, here is an article that was posted here on PoundingTheRock that gives an in depth analysis on Hanga.
All the other players the spurs own the rights to are unlikely to join soon because of contract agreements they have with their clubs. Which player are you most excited for? Is there someone I missed that you think should be on this list? Is there a prospect your looking forward to in the next draft? Let me know! I would love to hear your thoughts
