So the Spurs have already been quoted as being "unusually aggressive" this season whether true or not we don't know. The Spurs were linked to Luol Deng this December saying that they could pursue a trade for him or attempt to sign him in the offseason. I've recently found another rumor linking the Spurs again to Deng possibility in a trade with the Cavs who are struggling as a franchise as of now. Alex Kennedy reports that there's a possibility that Cleveland will blow it up after firing Chris Grant their GM. I propose a trade with Cleveland for Deng he's an all star level forward and he could help push us over the top.
Cleveland's asking price is unknown but for the record Deng is an expiring and there's a good chance that he won't resign with Cleveland during the offseason especially the state their in. Cleveland can let him walk but if they can get something for him it might be incentive to trade him. The tricky part with trading Deng is that since he's been traded he can only be traded by himself so Cleveland can't package him with other players. My proposed trade for him is Matt Bonner, De Colo, Joseph, Danny Green, and our 1st round pick. Bonner and De Colo fill the role of expiring contracts to help match up salaries. Joseph is there as filler he's cheap and he's got some upside but mostly just a throw in and cheap insurance. Danny Green has established himself as one of best three and d guys in the league. He's on a good contract and he's valuable on any team. Cleveland's already given him up before so they might be reluctant to take him back but he's not the same player he was in Cleveland. Green is cheap young talent if nothing else. We also give up our 1st round draft pick which will likely be in the 27-30 range but with so many teams placing high value in draft picks this year a 1st rounder is valuable no matter where it may be.
Looking around the league we've been wanting the Spurs to trade for a wing player (Ariza, Affalo) but with players like that a rare commodity and not many teams offering theirs up for trade the best route to getting a wing player might be to just upgrade. This trade turns Green into Deng essentially on the wing. I hate giving up Green but All Star players like Deng are just so valuable and also Deng is too talented to play off the bench so he wouldn't be backing up Kawhi but rather starting at small forward and we move Kawhi to shooting guard. Wings are interchangeable in our system so while Kawhi is playing out of position it's not like he's going to be lost out there. Also Kawhi hasn't stepped up into the role we thought he would have so maybe its best for now to let him just go back to what we were originally using him for. We gain size and rebounding all around in our starting lineup and Deng can easily be a second or third scoring option. He's also a good ball handler and can play sort of a point forward role( he has taken that role with Rose out before) at times giving us another ball handler in the first unit besides Parker.
Starting lineup PG-Parker, SG-Kawhi, SF-Deng, PF-Timmy, C-Tiago. Added size, rebounding, defense, and scoring in the starting lineup while we get to keep the Foreign Legion of Doom lineup as reserves. Not saying this trade gurantees us anything and Deng may just leave us but its a shot and attempt at a trade. Anyway that's an idea I thought about I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.
