Power Rankings Week 11: Spurs rise as players go down

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

The Spurs rose in NBA rankings despite injuries to a few key players, jumping all the way to the top spot on a couple of lists. Can they maintain their solid play this week?

Tiago's out for another month or so, Manu's been missing games, and now Danny Green's out four weeks with a broken finger. Still, like the arachnids on Starship Troopers, the Spurs are able to take a few shots and still remain largely combat-effective; they've won four straight games and seven of their last eight.

The team is now back in first place in the conference and has a chance to create a bit of distance against their main West competitors in the next few weeks, with tilts against Portland and OKC to come.

The Danny Green news was released after the rankings, but one would expect San Antonio to hang more or less where they are regardless. The team has been able to get meaningful contributions from various players, and this'll be just another opportunity for one of the league's best benches to rise to the occasion once again.

The Spurs also jumped from second to first in Hollinger's Power Rankings -- so there's that.

This week they've got two easy ones (at New Orleans, Utah), before getting another crack at formidable West foe, the Portland Trail Blazers.

Slippage on D in December, multiple injuries and their well-chronicled struggles to beat the rest of the West's elite haven't stopped the Spurs from posting the league's best road record (14-3) or giving themselves a shot to be the NBA's first 30-win team if they win Monday in New Orleans.

Even without guard Manu Ginobili (hamstring) and center Tiago Splitter (shoulder), the Spurs are still rolling with four straight wins

Jason Patt from SBNation NBA (Spurs rank: 2, last week's rank: 3)

The Spurs have won four games in a row, with three of them being of the blowout variety. In the one close game during the winning streak, Manu Ginobili played hero against Memphis.

USA Today (Spurs rank: 2, last week's rank: 3)

Tim Duncan is shooting less than 49% for the first time in his career.

John Schuhmann from NBA.com (Spurs rank: 1, last week's rank: 5)

The Spurs blew a 16-point, fourth-quarter lead on Tuesday, but won in OT, have the best point differential (and No. 1 offense) since the day after Christmas, and have been fine defensively without Tiago Splitter. They'll pay for it in February, but they're in the midst of a stretch where they're playing 13 of 16 games at home. Friday is their first meeting with the Blazers since the first week of the season.

Matt Moore from CBSSports.com (Spurs rank: 3, last week's rank 6)

Moving up by not screwing up.
