Quickcap: Spurs hang on to win Game 2 against Grizzlies

Stephen Dunn

In a game that looked like the Spurs would run away and hide, as they did in Game 1, the Memphis Grizzlies nearly completed a huge comeback win. The start of the game saw Tony Parker break down the Grizzlies' defense on the pick and roll and find the open man consistently. The ball movement was there to the point where all the Spurs' second quarter field goals were assisted. Meanwhile the Grizzlies continued to be without answers on offense, as the Spurs played off their bad shooters to pack the paint and neutralize Zach Randolph, who went 1-10 in the first half. The 15 point lead the Spurs enjoyed going into intermission seemed about right.

But the Grizzlies adjusted and, with Tim Duncan limited by foul trouble, made their move on the third, scoring two more points in the quarter than they had in the entire first half. The back ups spaced the floor better, which allowed Gasol, Randolph and Conley to hit close range shots. But the Spurs kept scoring and the lead was only cut to 12 going into the final quarter. Unfortunately, the Spurs couldn't buy a bucket in the final frame, partially because of a great defensive effort by Memphis and partially because of bad shot selection. The Grizzlies cut the deficit to four and after a turnover, Manu Ginobili fouled Tony Allen on the ensuing fast break. The refs reviewed it and it was considered a flagrant foul. Allen canned the two shots and Conley tied it up. We were going to overtime and the Grizzlies had the momentum.

But a rested Tim Duncan was too much for the exhausted Grizzlies to contain. Tim scored six overtime points and secured a Spurs win that was equal parts nerve-wrecking and critical for their chances to advance. Spurs won: 93-89.
