Before everyone begins ignoring the rest of this post let me tell you how I began to formulate this question. Everyone knows Pop is the best coach in the league right now, but after watching a panel which consisted of George Carl, P.J. Carleismo, and Avery I was really confused as how there are so many great coaches right now out of work. I know scheme and direction could factor, or the own coaches preferences of not being demoted to assistant but still this question drew me to another big factor in which I will now take a moment to explain using my favorite NFL team. (Feel free to skip the next paragraph as the following one is where my question comes into place.)
The Philadelphia Eagles had the second longest tenure head coach in Andy Reid for 15 years, last year he was fired after a poor performance going 4-12. Andy has lead the team to 4 straight division championships and only one trip to the superbowl, he never won a ring. Now the comparisons of these coach can be highly noted by their coaching tree they left behind. Andy, having 6 of his assistants rise and become head coaches in the league compared to Pop, having I believe 8. Now Andy's firing consistent of poor drafts and also something I think the Spurs do, which is promote from within.
As you know, Bud and Brown has left our organization to pursue a dream of their own. What I question now is the creativity and strength we have left in our coaches. I think it's a great thing to promote from within, but also it could weaken the coaching staff because we lose experience and with Pop as stubborn and dare I say controlling, I wonder if the new guy Udoka I believe will even factor in the coaching staff. When coaches start out, they look to gather the best coaching staff around them, as they slowly gain success, those coaches take what they learn and try to implement the winning way to other teams. Now we all know that Pop is the greatest coach out there, but can the assistant coaches step up to replace Bud and implement new ideas, and grow as the Spurs do. Or will there be an illusion of success as it did with the Eagles, where after Pop the strength of the coaching staff is greatly weakened.
