When I found out that Jeremy Lin had received an invitation from the Olympic team to tryout I was impressed. I think I am more impressed about his emergence rather his game. But one has to have opportunity before he can emerge. Patrick Mills received his opportunity late in the season when his team the San Antonio Spurs decided that resting key players was more important than securing the number 1 seed. Patty Mills just simply had to play basketball while displaying his abilities on the side. This was evident in the last two games when he exploded in his first game of the last two remaining scoring 27 points, 5 assists, and 4 turnovers. The last game of the season left a good taste in everyone's mouth scoring 37 points off 56% shooting, 12 assists, and 4 turnovers. He has only started in three games, played in 16.
Jeremy Lin's opportunity came earlier when his team decided that they needed a spark of the bench that would keep them in the play offs. Jeremy Lin was desperate, Mike Woods was desperate, and the New York Knicks as a whole establishment was desperate to succeed, while Patty simply had to finish what the Spurs started. I will not downplay Jeremy Lin's success, but I will highlight Patty Mills’s underrated two last games that had the same results that Lin had when he played without key players. No Manu, Duncan, Toni and you had no Amare and Carmelo. Both players still dominated. Based off performance, yes I know one played more than the other, but who would you sign as a free agent.
