So, many have said that Stern's nightmare would be the Pacers and Spurs in the finals. And the reason this would be a nightmare is because of ratings. I believe this to be true. What I'm wondering though is this, if the league spent time and energy and effort, and put their whole marketing effort behind pumping up some of these other teams, Nuggets, Pacers, Sixers, Spurs, Jazz, etc., wouldn't that increase ratings? I mean, isn't poor ratings more of an indictment on the NBA and networks marketing departments, than an indictment of the teams themselves? If people tune in and can't stand watching it (as happens to me when I try to watch some Eastern conference games) that's one thing. If people won't tune in, because it is the Spurs, or any other unhyped team for that matter, is that the fault of the team?
So I'm just thinking, seriously, if there were commercials for Spurs games with JUST some quotes from Sports writers, like "so much fun to watch," "most fun since the 7 seconds or less Suns", etc., don't you think people might actually watch some games and the boring tag would disappear and ratings for ALL of their games go up? And you know, something else could be done for the Pacers, like, "most athletic team in the league". This just seems like a no-brainer to me. You want customers, you advertise and nurture. What do you all think?
