Why are you a Spurs fan?

i am a Spurs fan because of David Robinson, hands down. When I was in junior high I would skip going to watch our local high school basketball games so I could watch The Admiral an Hakeem the Dream fight it our on TBS or TNT, I don't remember which it was. It seemed like the whole game revolved around those two, or when they played the Nuggets and Dikembe was still there. It seems likes basketball has changed from a big mans game to a point guards game. Anyway I digress, I love the Spurs because David Robinson was my hero and he passed the torch to Tim Duncan, and now TD is old and our chances to win another title are pretty slim, I believe that this may be their last year to be competitive. (at least for a little while). I'm from Kansas and I want you to know there are people who care about the Spurs, I love them to death, almost the same as I love My Royals and Chiefs,... and oh shit, my daughter.....ooops.......thats why I love the Spurs, why do you?

I too became a Spurs fan because of Robinson. He was and is a terrific person and personified the Spurs organization. I think Duncan and company have done a great job of carrying on the mantle of winning with character. I’m hoping that our front office can get the job done of putting together teams that are competitive for the next few years.

I was raised on them. They’re very likeable, and I trust them, unlike the Dallas Cowboys. They play as a team, they tend to be good clean people, and they’re talented and have a future as long as we’ve got RC and Pop.

Fandom

I fell in love with the organization as a while. They just do things the right way with the right kind of guys. Being a small-market team also gives them a “Us against the world” mentality. The man responsible for it all is Greg Popovich. The values he instills is what makes this team my favorite. The Stone Cutters Creed cemented my love.

Around 90-91? while in San Antonio (I was born somewhere in there), my father got me a Spurs cap and seeing as I had yet to choose a basketball team or even watch a basketball game, I decided to give the team and game a chance and here I am.

I was a bulls fan when I was a kid. Difficult to make another choice, as most games that aired here were the bulls ones. When Jordan retired in 98 I started following the spurs, loved the idea of the two giants and of course that they drafted an argentine (even when I thought he would NEVER play for them). Slowly but surely I fell in love with the team and popovich.

Born in SA, went to my first game at Hemisfair when I was 4(I think). It was an exciting game, the Spurs beat Utah at the last second, and I never looked back.

I started to notice the Spurs during the first TD’s season. I didn’t watch much of the NBA back then, though I had been impressed by MJ in 1996. In 1999 it was such a nice story of good guys finishing first, and the Admiral passing the mantle, I couldn’t resist cheering for them. For a few years though I was more of Anti-Laker fan than the Spurs fan (the Lakers were much more often on TV, and I would cheer for whoever was looking able to beat them – Portland, the 76ers, Sacto). Then the Spurs got that funny-looking lefty with funny-sounding foreign name, and it sealed the deal …

Both teams played hard

Similarly to Chilai I was a Bulls fan when I was a kid because Bulls games were the only ones I got to watch on TV and pre-Hitler ‘stache Michael Jordan was pretty great. After Jordan retired, there was a void in my fanhood for a while. I was drawn to the Spurs because of Duncan and Robinson but I didn’t really became a fan until Manu was signed. So you could say that I became a Spurs fan because of Manu. The reasons why I think I’ll still be a Spurs fan after Manu retires are to many to count, but PtR is definitely among them.

As a kid, I followed the Bulls. Then I started watching the college basketball and there was Tim Duncan at Wake Forrest. He went to the Spurs and bam….

I actually became a fan of the spurs because of Brent Barry, loved the way he played.
I’m from Belgium, and really it took a long time for me to be able to watch full games. Since he retired, Manu has been my favourite player. Although he’ll have to watch out. Loving me some Green!

"That’s cool." - Duncan on his near quadruple-double in game 6 of the 2003 NBA Finals.

Like some here, I was a Bulls fan growing up. I liked the way they played defense and shared the ball on offense, although the ball would end up in MJ’s hands 90 percent of the time… but their structured, disciplined style of play particularly caught my attention. I must admit, I didn’t see much of the NBA several years after Jordan’s retirement. I focused my basketball fanhood on our own professional basketball league here in the Philippines, the PBA during that span. Until one day, I saw this Argentine team play for the World Champiionships and the Olympics. I loved the way they played team basketball on both ends of the court… then took notice of a guy named Ginobili. When they took the Olympic gold medal, I thought this guy would be a great player in the NBA and teams would be too dumb not to pick him in the draft. Then about 28 or so teams were really that dumb, after all and a team I didn’t even know existed (Spurs games were rarely shown here in the Philippines during the 90s), picked him up. My admiration for Ginobili grew to the team itself, with the style of structured offense and defense and character reminiscent of the Bulls of the 90s… so I was hooked.

It's better to be silent and be thought of as a fool... than open your mouth and remove all doubts.

Timmeh!

I became of fan of Timmeh when he and the OSU Cowboys played in the 1995 NCAA Tourney. That year, we went to the Final Four, but along the way we ran into Wake Forest. I fell in love with Duncan’s game, and I started following the Spurs when he was drafted. It helped that Robinson was already a Spur, but what sealed it was the way the team played. I wasn’t really an NBA fan before then, although I did like the 1980s Sixers. And I might have been the only person living in Illinois during the 2nd Bulls’ run who was rooting for the Jazz.

Manu first.

Specifically, a road trip in May 2005 with a relative who wasn’t about to miss any playoff games. I had no idea what I was watching at that point, but the skinny guy with the flying hair was the most recognizable, so I watched him. And that was the end of that.

Plus what was said above – classy organization, good people, good at what they do.

Our family moved to SA when I was 10. I started going to games at the old Hemisfair Arena, following the Iceman and Jimmy Si (Captain Late). I’ve been a fan ever since…

Spurs (home) game tickets from my grandfather in like ’87 lead me to follow The Good Guys. I was so fed up with Akeem (at the time) being the talk of the town and I wanted my “own” team to root for… became a HUGE fan after Numbers 50 and 32 started playing…

It is a little bit embarrassing, but I only became a fan by the Spurs in their 2003 playoff run. I liked the way they run their plays, I’m a fat guy who likes to run at full speed in fast breaks, and there’s no way I would be leaping by 4 feet or something. So watching the Spurs made me realize that players don’t need to have that kind of athleticism to win games, it’s all about teamwork and proper strategy. The same thing why I love Manu, he’s not that flashy compared to other players, but he’s style, that spin he creates in his dribble, gives him the things he need to create for the team. To summarize it all, if the Spurs is a hero in dotA, HoN, LoL, or whatever game you play, they are the sole “INT” – Intelligent type of hero in the NBA, which makes them unique and intelligent choice for every classy basketball fan in the universe.

I’m a Spurs fan because of David Robinson. First, David was an outspoken Christian, which very much appealed to me as a 6-year-old hardcore evangelical. Second, David was able to compute his mom’s grocery bill before she got to the checkout line, without using a calculator! This early love for the Admiral and the Spurs, coupled with my family’s rule that one could not switch team allegiances after age 10, meant that I became a fan for life:)

My parents shared season tickets with one of my dad’s coworkers, and sometimes when my mom couldn’t go, my dad would take either myself or my sister to Hemisfair Arena. It was amazing to walk in there and sit up in the deck, watching the Baseline Bums waving their flags and jumping around. There was never a question of where my loyalties lied, and if there was, my entire family (parents, aunts, uncles, and especially grandparents) would quickly nip that in the bud. And yes, I remember the hordes of kids back in elementary school that favored the Bulls over the Spurs, even in San Antonio.

It still holds true today almost thirty years later even though I’m 2,000 miles away from my hometown.
