I have a little theory I have been thinking for a while now: The spurs defensive philosofy (Popovich’s) has always been protect the paint with Timmeh, guard the 3 point line at all costs and let the other team shoot a bunch of long 2 pointers.
That worked for years, but not only Tim has aged (and plays less minutes) I think that the NBA in general has become better at shooting those long 2’s. Teams are more offensive minded each year, and “defensive specialists” that cant shoot are becoming rarer each passing season. Tradutinal Big men are in a process of extctinction and are being replaced by guys who love to shoot long 2’s and can make them

"Kevin Garnett once described defending Tim Duncan as "trying to guard a tree"

by Chilai on Jan 23, 2012 8:20 PM CST reply actions

hmmm…maybe. still seems like the guys who dominate are the guys who can go inside/outside ala jordan. kobe, durant, james etc.

by mikrobass3 on Jan 23, 2012 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

interesting theory. be interesting to see if numbers back it up re: mid- and long-range 2 pointers (looking at percentage of shots taken from there, and accuracy, over the years).
