Spurs Assign Gary Neal to Austin Toros for Rehab
SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have assigned Gary Neal to the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League for a medical rehab assignment. Neal underwent an appendectomy on December 12, 2011.
Neal enjoyed a successful rookie campaign during the 2010-11 season. He averaged 9.8 points and 2.5 rebounds in 21.1 minutes in 80 games. He led all rookies in three-point field goal percentage, posting a .419 mark, and earned a spot on the 2011 All-Rookie First Team.
Neal will practice with the Toros on Monday and Tuesday of this week and then be re-evaluated by team doctors. At that point, a timeline for his return will be determined.

A good way to work off the rust. I like it.

Wow, I actually predicted this last week when it was said he was ready but needed some contact work and saw that the Toros were at home this week. I get one right every so often.

I would think he might likely only play Thursday and Friday night while Austin as at home and not travel with the team. As it turns out, Austin will play in Tulsa on Sunday afternoon while the Spurs play in Oklahoma City on Sunday evening. Could work out that he plays in Tulsa then travels to Oklahoma City to join them in time to travel for their next game in Milwaukee. Otherwise the Toros are on the road for a couple of games in Reno (though playing Erie and Dakota), a game in Bakersfield, back to Reno (to play Reno) before returning to Austin. Tulsa seems a slight possibility, but hopefully he’s ready after the two games in Austin.
if neal is playing in a toros game this week that might be enough to coax me into making the 1.7 mile bike ride to the frank erwin center
I’m thinking Pop sent him to the Toros to let him practice his PG skills.
