Power of the Three
In reading the brilliant Series Preview created by the PtR Team (Fantastic chops, by the way), I thought about our exceptional basketball trio and another Rock Group that may more closely resemble our Holy Trinity.
Here's my Rock choice for the Big 3.
- A Trio whom most casual music fans consider boring. But in real life this group likes to Joke and fool around and around with the best of them.
- A Band with all the bling (records), but little to no music establishment acceptance. They've sold 24 gold records and 4 platinum which place them third behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones for the most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band.
- These guys have been eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1998. And unlike our Big Three, it's very unlikely they will ever be voted into the HOF. (Damn you to hell, Jann Wenner!)
- A somber, media-shy intellectual drummer who is the backbone of the band. He sets the tone and pace of each performance, and need I say, many consider him the Greatest of All Time. GREATEST. OF. ALL. TIME.
- The exceptional bassist/vocalist/keyboardist who's unorthodox performances give this band it's heart and soul.
- The excellent lead guitarist whom many deem the least of the three members. But that is easily forgotten when he decides to take control of this group and shows his expertise.
- A Band who only now, as they near the twilight of their career are finally garnering the respect and recognition they deserve.
- Millions love them in a cult like fashion, but especially those crazy Brazilians.
- There's nothing more joyous than watching these 3 work together.
That's right... In my eyes, your Big 3 are RUSH.
- Tim Duncan is Neil Peart
- Manu Ginobili is Geddy Lee
- Tony Parker is Alex Lifeson

So we do share brainwaves. I suggested Rush for the Big 3 and was thinking of your exact pairings. Weird.

I am personally not a Rush fan, but I love your comparison, and must agree with it. Their loyal following, their incredible – lengthy! – run of success commands my respect. Their musicianship is top notch, and their sound is completely origional. The fact that they have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF is both a mystery to me, and a mark of shame on the Hall. Why haven’t they been inducted? Not poppy enough? (there have been plenty of less poppy groups let it.) Everyone knows a Rush song when they hear it. It can’t be because they’re Canadian.
It shouldn’t make me feel better, but here’s a few that are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel, Kiss, The Smiths and Los Lobos to name a few.
However, knowing that Madonna was inducted always makes me feel worse.
Thanks, Ed.

I knew Kiss was not in. Like them or not, they’ve certainly made their imprint on the genre.
SRV, I can imagine they’re jus taking their time because his career was so short, and he’s been dead longer than the length of his career. But, he’s certainly got the legacy, material and the numbers to warrant an induction. I’d say the same about Deepp Purple, Gabriel, Smiths, and Los Lobos, too. I think all of those acts ought to be in.
Unfortunately, most HOFs have these same issues with deserving people being left out. I just wish they separated the Basketball HOF into NBA, College, and International, much like other sports. It’s too difficult to try to encompass all of those levels. One of the recent debates concerns Ralph Sampson – he deserves to be a HOFer for his collegiate career, but not for his NBA career. Separate HOFs would solve this issue.
And yes, all those musicians are deserving.
