Game #73 Preview - Spurs @ Grizzlies - Time for a win
The Spurs look to keep from losing 3 straight for the first time all year as they head to Memphis to take on a tough Grizzlies team. Memphis has been playing very well of late are trying to solidify their playoff postion. I've got to be honest, I hope they either miss the playoffs or move up and don't match up with the Spurs in the first round. Memphis is going to cause whoever they play in the first round lots of problems and I hope it's not the Spurs.

Starters
PG: Parker needs to dominate Fisher and Conley and Williams. I fully expect Tony's stellar to continue tonight. Let's hope Frenchie can avoid the injury bug that seems to bite him whenever they play the Grizz.
SG: Manu by a mile. Young and Mayo don't hold a candle to The Sickness
SF: Battier is back with Memphis and will cause problems with Jefferson. RJ needs to pick it up a bit, but I think he'll be up for this match up.
PF: Antonio versus Randolph. McDyess has been big in the last two games for the Spurs. Let's hope he can keep it up against a very solid Big Z.
C: Splitter has shown some good signs, but I'll take the more experienced Gasol in this match up of foreign bigs.
Bench
Spurs have the edge here, but it's close. Neal, Bonner and Hill will need to show up to give the starters some solid support.
Coaching
Yeah, Pop.
Intangibles
Spurs are at the end of a three game roadie. They Spurs are looking to avoid a 3 game losing streak. The Grizz have been playing well including beating Boston on the road. Advantage Grizz.
Mojo
Spurs are not happy. You don't want to see the Spurs upset.
Prediction
Spurs pull out a close win.
Key(s) to the Game
Key 1 - Ball movement. The Spurs need keep up the ball movement to keep the Grizzlies defense off balance.
Key 2 - Threes - Spurs will need to hit their open threes and play some sort of perimeter defense.

Dude, I saw this comment before I read the post, and I thought nothing of it. Then I saw it, and I thought how perfect it is!
Now, Fiddy has his own Preview-induced-Parker-related Lexicon entry, just like CapHill.
Parker must dominate Fisher with the continuation of Tony’s stellar! Wow. That’ll be fun to try to describe to newbies, eh?

Key(s) to the Game!!!
to add to yours
1 limit turnovers!! (seems like a problem lately)
2 keep them off the glass especially offensive reb (seems like a problem we have with men)
- will be difficult since the Grizz do that to everyone including the Lakers. Interestingly, their inability to rebound defensively is what cost them against the Bulls.
- Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
- I vow to never again mention "playoffs" and "49ers" together until we have a "quarterback."
- You gotta bring ass to get ass.

That should be like #1 through #10. It has been a huge problem lately and getting worse.

I’m as optimistic about this game as one can be coming off two losses in a row. The Spurs should come out with great vengeance and furious anger. They’re a handful of plays away from having won two games on the road against very good teams with a lot to play for. Then they’re going against a team that backhanded them last time. As prideful as the Spurs are, they’ll be motivated. As long as Parker stays healthy, I expect a win. If I just jinxed him, you can ban me.
This will be Splitter’s third game in a row matching up against a quality big man (Nene, Aldridge, Gasol or possibly Randolph). The training wheels have come off for him and he’s looking like a viable option come playoff time. The Spurs didn’t have this sort of flexibility at this time last week.
Asked before the game how Parker has looked, Popovich said, "He’s still cute. "

Perfect movie quote for this game. I certainly hope our guys strike down up thee Grizzlies.

Eye on the prize, guys. I do not want this team making the playoffs…especially if we run the risk of having to face them. They’ve been one of our most problematic match ups all year long. That being said…another team they’ve given fits to is LA. And if they can give both our Spurs and the Lakers problems, then Dallas is toast.
Yup. My personal hope is that Memphis moves up (not against us though!!!) and leaves us with a David West-less Hornets or the Rockets. I could live with either.
"I know everthang they is to know about the shrimpin bidness."
Agreed on the Nooch, or Rockets. They both have a few match up problems, but our whole is better than their parts. (I know, I know…that has TWSS written all over it!)

Hornets are not cooperating. They’re playing to their absolute ceiling which means they’ll likely fall hard in the 1st round as they did in ’09. At this point, that fall will be against LAL, but they do play the Grizz two more times and Houston once so a drop is possible.

And they play LAL at Staples 2-NITE.

I don’t expect your guys to have any issues with NOLA tonight or, should you meet, in the playoffs. Hornets need a healthy Paul, West and Okafor to defeat the top teams in the West.

Yeah I doubt they would present much of a challenge in the playoffs. And a win tonight doesn’t seem too much to ask, although I figure we will drop a game at some point.
But I would like to win just to stay ahead of Dallas and possibly catch da Bulls.

No one should panic if our guys lose this game. When TD went out with is ankle injury in ’05, the team immediately lost three straight road games, five consecutive road games overall and nine of the final eleven road games to the season. This cost them 60+ wins and prevented them from catching PHX for the #1 seed. Yet it all worked out in the end. Keep the perspective big picture and things are not so bad.

If Pop finally plays Splitter and McDyess in the fourth I think we should have our first win since losing Timmy. If he keeps going super small in the fourth like the last two games Griz win. Z-Bo is a handful even with bigs defending him.
i disagree make them worry about matching us with us
a line up of
pg – quinn
sg – parker
sf – hill
pf – gino
c – blair or jefferson
that’s way too much speed and shooting for the men bigs to keep up
Why are the Fakers feared? Its not because they can go small and be faster than anyone else. It is their length, the ability to out rebound, block and protect the rim. Yea Don Nelson showed how great small ball can work but how many rings does he have? In the last two games yes you can argue that we didn’t play well toward the end of the game, but if we had some rebounding shot blocking protecting the rim. if the team was able to make a stop on the defensive side of the ball. That’s why Tim is so sorely missed his rebounding blocking shots protecting the rim. Manu and Tony can not be expected to be perfect every end game situation Kobe is far from playing perfect in the end of games but sure helps when you have three seven footers cleaning up your mess pulling down rebounds for you to have extra shots.
i was clearly joking
i agree with you over all and i have wanted more splitter time all season…and im very aware of why the LA is feared
having said that i don’t recall seeing you post a lot before timmy went down 9maybe its just me not noticing) and since then every thread you post 25 times how you don’t like the small ball (neither do i but 1-2 post along these lines gets the point across i think) or if pop doesn’t use a stupid rotation we’ll win…
like i said i agree but also Pop is a good coach and he knows his team. also sometimes you have to go with the best players or more experienced group you have (this may not be a conventional line up but if you put out your best 5 you should win.) some times that means maybe dice needs more rest or he doesn’t think splitter is a good match. the execution was really bad the last 1-2min and it had little to do with our bigs that were in the game
Pop has a long history or not playing rooks at all or not much or not playing them in tight meaningful games/moments (ie the whole playoffs). he isn’t always right and just because he is the coach doesn’t mean he is automatically right and you and i are wrong, but its also his job and he has a good track record last i checked. i don’t always agree but as you said how many rings do i have
Ehh. Tony is smarter with the ball in Portland and he gets fouled. Two FTs and we’re up 6 with about 30 seconds remaining. I don’t think anyone would be discussing Pop’s lineup choices when we finish out the Portland game winning by 5+ points.

All true…but I REALLY hope we win this game, preferably with one of our current semi-slumpers (Hill, Blair) or Tiago having a monster breakout game.
"I know everthang they is to know about the shrimpin bidness."
We need to win this one, for mutliple reasons… but mainly because these guys will be deflated if they can’t beat us without Timmeh.
Listen to Coach "B", kids. Use both hands!
I understand why they kept Timmeh in San Antonio to speed the rehab, but I wonder how the last two games would have ended if he had been on the bench in a suit acting as an unofficial assistant coach. I have a strong suspicion he would have got their heads together and helped them pull out the wins.
His complete absence from the sideline is as big a problem as his absence on the court. It will be interesting to see if Tim’s sideline presence when the Spurs return to San Antonio until he can return to playing will make a difference.

I will not be in the game thread tonight, so y’all best bring back an epic victory.
I may post in the Quick Cap, quite late.
Halftime Fish FTW.
It’s going to be hard-fought, but I think the Spurs will pull it out.
Especially if Senor Sparkles plays. Alot. :P

Tiago’s defense has impressed me of late. SAM and Tiago make a good front court combo. We can totally do this!!!

he is awesoem at getting into position…my only problem is sometimes he is so focused on getting his body in position and physically defending his man he doesn’t get his hands up and someone shots right in his face. it happens at least 1-2 times a game. but overall hes playing really well and im sure that will get better
He has been pretty good all season whenever ive seen him in a game for more then 5min
There were a few games earlier this season where he would get a chance and play and play well for 20min and then have 2-3 dnp -coaches decisions right after. Thats not really an option at this point and i like what we are seeing.
