Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton,  Danilo, Galinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors' 2012 second-round pick, the Warriors' 2013 second-round pick and $3 million in cash to the Nuggets.

Deron Williams, Brandan Wright, Dan Gadzuric to the nets

Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, two 1st round picks, + $3M to Jazz

Troy Murphy to Warriors

I just hope that Chauncey isn’t bought out and sent to the Lakers. A decent defender that can hit the 3? Life isn’t fair, but it could happen.

all indications so far are that if Chauncey is bought out he will go back to denver or if he isnt he said he would retire and go back to denver (either as a player or in their FO somewhere). things can chance but thats what he has said before the trade

by spurs fan on Feb 23, 2011 11:30 AM CST up reply actions

He never wanted to leave Denver so it wouldn’t be a surprise for this to happen. I doubt the Knicks are done anyway so they will need to find a PG because Tony Douglas isn’t going to cut it.

I expect Chauncey to give NY a try for the remainder of this season. Beyond that, hopefully for his sake he gets to go back to Denver where he was happy.

He’d want to go back to Denver and retire in his hometown. There were rumors he might retire if he got traded. I think NY is a little bit nicer than NJ, but I’m sure he tried or will try to get himself bought out.

I can’t believe Deron got traded, especially after Sloan left. This is insanity. BTW, the Russian Mark Cuban did a lot better than he would have in a ’Melo trade.

completely agree this is a much better deal them melo. i personally like williams alot more and they gave up alittle less to get him.

As i said on the thread on the williams trade the sloan leaving and williams trade could be completely unrelated. williams has wanted an extention and they were not gonig to give it to him so thats the main reason he was traded.

by spurs fan on Feb 23, 2011 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

Ok, either I’m way behind or I don’t get it. Or probably both. Why are the Jazz unwilling to give D-Will, their franchise player, a contract extension? Or are their figures just off by a mile?

by TD21 on Feb 23, 2011 10:07 PM CST up reply actions

I think it had something to do with it, but the Jazz staff realize that they probably couldn’t keep Williams either. I think the backlash from Williams becoming the bad guy in Utah would prevent him from staying.

Espn:

Just Tuesday night, the Dallas Mavericks were talking to the Nets about re-acquiring Harris, according to sources. The Mavericks had shown interest in the point guard in January and told the Nets the sides should talk again if New Jersey didn’t ship him out in an Anthony trade.

Sources said Dallas turned down a New Jersey proposal of Harris for Caron Butler, Mavs rookie Dominique Jones and a first-round pick.

Yeah. Apparently, (still a rumor) Dallas heard the Utah really wanted Harris. They thought if they could get Harris, for Butlers contract(which is all they wanted to give up) then trade Harris and Roddy for Williams.

That would have been VERY bad for the Spurs and the West.

The bottom of the Western Conference playoff bracket is getting thinner while the East gets a bit stronger. Not an unusual shift as such things happen every decade, but this may help lighten the first round for the Spurs and Mavs or Lakers while lowering the bar for win totals to make the playoffs over the next few seasons. No longer should 50 wins be the required for the #8 seed.

by Spurs Yoda on Feb 23, 2011 12:24 PM CST up reply actions

Good question. Could the Suns’ thinking be that if they trade the one popular playmaker they have (other than Grant Hill but he’s not a centerpiece player) their arena will empty out and they become as irrelevant as they were back around 2002 after Kidd departed? My understanding of AZ is that most people who live there are transplants from elsewhere and don’t have the same fixation and loyalty to the sports teams as the people in Colorado, the Bay Area, or a place like Utah with only one pro team. They may luck out by holding on to Nash. They can be a 43 win team and still make the playoffs, and thus two or three extra home games of revenue, before being dismissed by the Spurs or Lakers, a familiar feeling regardless of seeding.

Because while Jarret Jack and Wille Green arent exactly all world scorers they can put some numbers out there. Meanwhile their frontcourt was thinner than hell. After West and Okafor they where using Jason frickin Smith and Aaron frickin Gray. Now they have one of the best backups in the NBA to spell those guys.
Thornton is a hell of an offensive player, but he needs big minutes to produce and get into rythym, and he is very undersized for a 2 guard. That hurts when your running mate is Chris Paul.

Hawks add Kirk Hinrich, deal Mike Bibby

ATLANTA — The struggling Atlanta Hawks acquired guard Kirk Hinrich from Washington in a five-player trade Wednesday, upgrading their backcourt for the playoff run.

The Hawks also received forward Hilton Armstrong in exchange for guard Mike Bibby, rookie guard Jordan Crawford, swingman Maurice Evans and a first-round pick in this year’s draft.

Well, perhaps it was just long term borrowing….

Seriously though, Scola wouldn’t fit too well with the team in its current iteration. He doesn’t answer the problems of size and defense that the Spurs need most.

Although, if they had him, they probably would not have taken Blair (although he is nearly too good to pass up where he was in the draft). And it probably would have saved Duncan’s legs a little more.

With that said, I still think it was probably the Spurs second worst decision. Honestly, I’d argue that the Spurs were slow to re-build/make themselves athletic and that cost the big 3 a season or so. I’d fault them on that probably slightly more than Scola. Aside from that, they’ve made very few mistakes.

Jackie, right? Or am I getting names mixed up and confusticated again?

Just checked. Here’s the info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Butler

On July 12, 2007 the Spurs traded Butler and the rights to Luis Scola to the Houston Rockets for Vasileios Spanoulis, a 2009 second-round draft pick and cash.[3

The contract was apparently not as big as I remembered it being, but the focus of the trade was us getting rid of it. We had to throw in Scola to get them to take it.

I don’t think we can say that the Spurs keep Scola even with the Butler contract. They were looking to trade Scola for a while. They screwed around with him and burned their bridges.

Butler was a pretty bad signing. This is true, but they took too long to get the athletic guys back. They finally went back to drafting American players, beginning with Hill and Blair. They haven’t really gone back to doing the foreign contention because they saw the problems it caused.

They have drafted Ryan Richards and Nando in the past two drafts, so they haven’t given up on drafting foreign players. I expect at the time of the draft, a lot depends upon whether they feel anyone has a chance to make the roster in the following season. Houston might as well take a chance on Thabeet since without Yao they basically are stuck in a puddle of water. Honestly, Houston is stuck between being competitive but not talented enough due to injuries and what not.

Twolves have so many PGs. Funny how the Rubio/Flynn thing was questioned and now they are finally moving a PG. Would be really funny if they trade to get another PG back on the team.

Of course Cuban finds a way to whine about this year’s trade season, but this is really interesting.

Via Ball Don’t Lie

And in a league where teams are ostensibly trying to save money and cut payroll in anticipation of labor negotiations taking place this summer between owners and players, the NBA-owned Hornets just did what Cuban claims no team wants to do right now. They sent Thornton to the Kings for a player making about four times what Thornton makes, taking in more salary while other teams are struggling to cut it, while owned by the NBA.

On paper, this reeks.

It’s fascinating to me that when all owners are claiming they are losing money, and are being forced to help pay for NOH because it’s owned by the league. I understand that this trade essentially helped both teams, but I never thought of the repercussions of millions of dollars in salary to the rest of the league.

In spite of this, I still dislike Mark Cuban. I’m so glad that the Spurs owner isn’t like him. We have a financially wise owner who in spite of the fact that he is worth 10% of most of the rest of the owners, knows how to spend his money.

I think he’s good for the NBA though even though he can be annoying. I think he plays fantasy GM too much, but he’s still run his team better than another big market team like NY.

I’d argue Shinn (Hornets previously) and Sterling are the worst ones for the NBA. Dolan is probably ranking up there as well.

There’ll always be a need for owners who will take on bad contracts. NY is an example of that, although Isiah Thomas did a number on the team multiple times.

But why did the celtics do it? Jeff Green doesnt add nothing of importance to them. The starting fowards are KG and Pierce, and Big baby gets all the backup 4 minutes (deservedly so). So they let go Perkins for a 10 minute backup who is NOT used to playing the 3? im scratching my head here

Maynor is a solid backup. I’m not sure why they need another PG. I can see where they’d want another scoring guard off the bench if Harden moves to the starting lineup with the Green deal.

I have no worry about them. Perkins’ knee is not healthy. Even healthy, he and Nazr Stone Hands are going to improve their defense in the paint but clog up the lane for Westbrook and Durant. This makes them even more of a jump shooting team, which is how the Mavs fall short every season.

It should make them better when matching the Lakers, but will the “gel” quick enough to surpass LA? At this point they are likely to only play in the WCF, a bit of a long-shot in the current West.

I don’t see how having Murphy instead of Perkins helps them in their ultimate goal of beating either the Spurs or Lakers in the Finals. Or for that matter getting past Chicago when both Noah and Boozer are in the lineup. I don’t think Murphy has ever played in playoff game, yet Perkins has given D-Howard some issues.

I’m considering a playoff run to be pressure. He mayy proove to fit quite well, but Perkins was established and Nate was a perfect scroing spark plug for that bench. Perkins was also all about defense and physicality which is the current Celtics DNA. Hard to change that midseason, especially when what you have was already championship proven material. If it hurts them for this season, that helps us, as they had been the primary obstacle IMO to the Spurs’ run for a fifth.
