I do not want people to be agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them. - Jane Austen
Great news. Does this mean we keep our log-jam problem in our big rotation? I only wish we could have had him earlier in his career.
Sh!fty. Some say the Spurs are overachieving as a team. I say they are underachieving as players and as a team. They can still get better!
So you see this as bad news? Would you rather have him retire?
Unless the Spurs get a chance for clear upgrade from our good enough but not great bigs, I would rather keep him. I would play him 10 minutes a game (actually playing 20-25 and ocassional DNPs when matchups ask for it). Also while lowering TDs minutes even more to make room for Tiago.
When Dice DNP
TD 25 mpg
Blair/Bonner/Tiago 70mpg
When Dice plays 25mpg
TD 25mpg
Blair/Bonner/Tiago 45mpg (or have Bonner/Tiago DNP)

You see up above where I said it was excellent news? No, I don’t think it’s bad news. I just think Pop will have to juggle the bigman rotation a bit like he has this season.

Sorry Tim, I normally don’t look at names.

I think Pop would enjoy sitting Dice every few games and Duncan a few games here and there. I doubt Richards sees a Spurs uniform any time soon so I don’t think that problem comes up too much.

Good News
Fantastic, it will be good to see him play another season, after we win it all this year!!

Man, oh man. I didn’t know I had stepped into a serious conversation. I wrote that when I was at work and I’m a fan of McDyess, glad he’s considering playing longer.
No, I don’t think we are destined to win or anything like that. The Spurs have done nothing, yet, although this has been a special regular season so far. I just felt like cheering like a third grader for a moment. Sheesh.

Woops. I have been known to miss a reference here and there. And I just don’t get the atomic fried chickens. It’s like the hideous bottom-feeding crustacea. Some things my brain just wants to not remember.
Say, did anybody hear that McDyess might re-sign? I think that’s awesome!

BTW, just to be clear, that’s what I was referencing as well. I had roughly the same reaction you did. :)

Since he gets paid $2.6M guaranteed for next year should he retire, it seems it’s as if he is being paid $7.46M for this year and then if he played next year he would earn an additional $2.3M for it. I think the Spurs might have originally thought they would have been getting a bit more production from him when they put that guaranty in. It does seem likely that he would earn the additional $2.3M if he returns next year. That would seem to me about the right amount to pay even if his minutes drop down to the point where he becomes the 5th big, which I would hope might happen next year with Tiago moving up.
I’d still have some concern that McDyess next year would become last year’s Finley in that trying to come up with some minutes for him hinders a younger player’s development. It would also seem to rule out using a mid-level exception (or whatever the new CBA comes up with) to possibly pursue an upgrade that would last far beyond a year. Also no telling who the Spurs might pick up in the next draft (and of course Ryan Richards from the last draft) that might be a better choice to keep as a 5th big next year.
Really? You want increased production from him? I think he’s been EXACTLY what we want, and probably will be next year, too. He’s perfect for the Spurs.

His final game for Detroit vs. Cleveland in the playoffs he scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds in 39 minutes. For the season he averaged just over 30 minutes and nearly 10 pts and 10 rebounds. He didn’t have a game in which he failed to score a point or grab a rebound. He had 16 double-doubles for the season, and the third best rebounding average of his career.
I’d say that most of the news reports about his free agent signing with the Spurs seemed to think that it was a big signing and that he was expected to start alongside Tim. Last season he had 3 double doubles, and 11 games in which he failed to score. About this time last season it seemed there was a lot of talk of how slowly both McDyess and Jefferson were at picking up the system. He averaged 21 minutes last year and is down to 18 this year.
While it could be what the Spurs had planned all along with Pop managing his minutes, I suspect they were looking for something more like his production his final year with Detroit. I don’t think they’ve been unhappy with him, just that they might have had slightly higher expectations. Since it would seem both sides were expecting only 2 years from him, the guaranteed money for the third year was their way of being able to pay him more than the Mid-Level Exception. I’d say the Bulls are getting about the same if not more production from Kurt Thomas for only $1.8M.
Look at the offensive options in Detroit that season, then look at the Spurs offensive options. He’s got 0 chance to score that much here. I think if you look at his fg%, which I’m pretty sure has gone up since he’s been here, you’ll see we’re probably getting exactly what we expected.
He could start with Tim if we wanted him to, but we’d rather have the young guys do that. We all know that he’s really the second best overall big on the roster, due to his ability to knock down the long jumper, play defense, and rebound. Could he be the second best for 30 minutes a night, every night? Probably not, but at his age I’d be shocked if we ever thought that possible.

They win the championship and he’s worth it no matter how many minutes per game he averaged. He’s the Spurs best big man defender. There’s a reason why Pop puts him in place of Duncan when the matchup dictates only one big man. I love Duncan, but Dice has him beat on the lateral quickness and on the P&R defense.
I suspect that the Spurs will see Dallas and if Dice plays anything like he did last year against Dirk, the Spurs will beat the Mavs sufficiently.

Happy for Dyce and happy for us. This is a guy who still creates good defensive match-ups vs certain players for the Spurs. Dyce can be rested even more next reg season and be fresh for playoff minutes against Dirk, West, Randolph, plus big man depth when playing the Lakers.
- Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
- I vow to never again mention "playoffs" and "49ers" together until we have a "quarterback."
