The rumors today are much better.

And tomorrow some vicious rumors will be sweeping in from the southwest; bringing with them some severe pouty faces and angry keyboard pounding. They’ll hang around with us for a few days, so have your salt shakers handy.

I would love some Battier. Hill not as much. I think he’s a good player, but he’s not really want the Spurs need from a 3 at this point.

by Big50 on Dec 6, 2011 3:14 PM CST reply actions

Actually, Hill, due to not playing during a few years is younger in his legs than his age. His D is solid, he’s a good passer and has an excellent midrange.

Yes, 3pt shooting is important, but Hill’s midranger is deadly. You got to respect that or you will get hurt. His reputation alone will help spread defenses and also get him calls from refs. I’d take Shane first, but I’d take Hill at a close second.

Spurs lack many players who can man PG-ish duties. Hill can help with that. The one area where Hedo was very good for the Spurs was being able to handle short stints at PG. And of course, Brent “Manu Jr.” Barry.

good point. and even though his age is 39 (hard to believe, IMO), he’s played at least 80 games for the last 3 seasons with the Suns, so i don’t think we’d have to worry too much.

I’m not sure how you classify his D as solid, but I’m not sure I buy that. You’re other points are well made, but I’d still rather have Battier.

yea i’d take Battier first, then Hill.

He’s not Bruce Bowen at his age, but when you compare to most players in the league, his D is solid. He is put up against the top swings from other opponents many times. He was covering Kobe in the past few seasons. No one is going to stop Kobe or some of those other swing men, but he played solid D on them.

Yep, and the rumor about the Spurs going after Chris Kaman is true. Go to ProjectSpurs for more details.

by Marky G on Dec 6, 2011 3:24 PM CST reply actions

It would be a very intelligent move. Kaman has only one year left, we could aquire him for one last push. He is EXACTLY what we need in my opinion. A beast post player who can rebound, defend and score.
He hasnt been healthy the last 2 seasons, but remember he was an all star only 2 years ago. Me likes.

But with Splitter/Duncan, it gives them more size. Hopefully Spurs don’t have to play him more than 25. Keeping his minutes down can help.

I agree, and like Chilai said, he only has one year left on his contract so if it doesn’t work out, at least we’ll relieve some cap space.

I would take either of these guys in a heartbeat. Of the guys we’re considering at SF I see it like this right hyeahhh:

1.) Battier 2.) Hill 3.) Butler, with a last place tie between VC and Josh Howard. I hope we’re not forced to choose between those two.

I completely agree with your order. I’d probably give VC a little bit of an edge just because Josh Howard is a bit of a nut case. Haha.

As much as I would love to have Battier, I would much rather hear about how we are chasing and set on getting at least two bigs. Then I can (depending on how many bigs and the quality of them) bring on LA and Miami we are taking the trophy to San Antonio where it belongs.

It would be nice to have either of these guys on the roster, but I dont think either of them genuinely ever considered San Antonio.

Its not a huge loss. Battier is past his prime and seeking a multiyear contract, surely for something he isnt quite worth, and Grant Hill should have been a spurs several years ago, now hes 1 year away from being 40.

Battier probably would. i know he respects the Spurs because they’re a classy organization, and he’s a classy guy. he’s obviously not a great scorer, even when he was in his prime, but he can still provide some offense, and i still consider him one of the best defenders in the league.

I tend to agree with your sentiment, but the Spurs are not the same age as when they won titles. They are much older, in basketball years.

No one said the Spurs are too old to win the title. Notwithstanding, Dallas capture of the title was an aberration on several fronts, both because of their age, and frankly, because it was Dallas.

I’m still bitter about it. Spurs were the the WC team, along with Memphis, that matched up best with Dallas. Lucky sons of guns didn’t have to play either.

I recall ‘07 as the year the Spurs matched up well with Dallas, plus had the revenge factor in their favor. The only disappointing thing about the GSW knocking out the Mavs in the first round is that the Spurs didn’t get to do it in an epic conference finals.

You don’t win a championship with a defensive wing and floor spreader who is 39 and a rubbish 3 point shooter.

If Hill is the answer we are asking the wrong question.

A 1 year rental on Battier is fine but seriously Grant Hill is in Robert Parish territory right now.

i’m not saying one of these guys is going to be the missing puzzle piece. there’s still some work to do, but veterans can help win championships. Finley, Horry, and Barry did in ‘07, Sam Cassell and P.J. Brown in ’08, Derek Fisher in ’09 and ’10, and Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion in ’11. i think Battier can help, but there are still a couple of issues to deal with, one being getting another big man, as everyone knows. Hill, i can understand because he is 39, but the guy’s been healthy for the past few seasons.

by RG8907 on Dec 6, 2011 11:06 PM CST up reply actions

veterans can definitely help win championships – i just don’t see the value in grabbing two of them, and these two in particular:
- hill has been pretty injury free in recent years, but at 39 and without the magic dust that the phoenix trainers have, i think it’s a big risk.
- battier? unlike most on ptr, i’ve never been sold on the guy. i don’t think he’s the missing vet savvy we’re after.

i could totally see pop running tony, manu, hill, battier and duncan as a 5. that’s 4 guys 34 or older, and i don’t like that.

by sleep research facility on Dec 7, 2011 12:21 AM CST up reply actions

Dont worry, the Spurs will get neither .These guys will find some other coattail to jump on, a sexier destination where they feel they have a better title shot, ala Chicago, Miami, etc.

@alamobro: not necessarily. the Spurs are still in the mix until both guys make their decisions, and we’ll just have to wait and see.

i never said get both guys. and besides, getting both guys would be impossible since we don’t have that much money. if i had to choose, it would obviously be Battier since he’s 33. he’s a defensive-minded player, something we’ve always been focused on other than last season. and he can still hit the 3. look what he did to us this past playoffs. as for Hill, it’s a very good chance he’ll re-sign with the Suns, but hey, if the Suns trainers can keep him in good shape, why not the Spurs trainers? but i respect your opinion, and i agree, having 4 guys 33 or older on the floor is not a good idea.

spurs championship is always a mix of veteran and young players.. 99 & 2003. given that TD is able to carry much of the load from these years, the veterans gave the team a complete sense of balance.. it’s one thing that separate the spurs from other teams, they know that it also takes desire to win championship, if Grant Hill wears the spurs uniform this season then our chances in terms of desire for championship has increase even further.

That is a great point. Never really thought about that. Manu desire usually carries us, but I think I would rather have youth and hunger to win rather than age and desire.
