San Antonio Spurs announce Steve Novak and Antonio McDyess are now on waivers
San Antonio, TX – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that forward Steve Novak has been placed on waivers. He originally signed with the Spurs on March 4, 2011. In 23 games in San Antonio, during the 2010-11 season, he averaged 4.0 points in 8.6 minutes. Novak re-signed with the Spurs on December 15, 2011.
At the same time the team announced that, due to the structure of his contract, Antonio McDyess has also been placed on waivers. McDyess signed with the Spurs on July 10, 2009. He spent the last two NBA seasons in San Antonio and, in April, McDyess announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2010-11 campaign.
"Antonio McDyess is the ultimate pro," said Spurs General Manager RC Buford. "It was truly a pleasure to have him in San Antonio the last two seasons. Antonio and his wife, Liara, are an important part of the Spurs family and will always be welcome."

What? Did I miss something? Was Dice going to retire? I feel if we are going to waive Dice there should be no reason why we don’t do the same with Blair unless he has some value in a trade. I’m really tired of watching his game on the floor, absolutely no defense and not very good offense.

Dice is being waived BECAUSE he was retiring, and the Spurs now only have to pay half his salary.
First you must find... another shrubbery! Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle. Still doesn’t change what I think we should do with Blair.

we signed him to meet our white guy quota. however after rereading the new cba they realized they only needed one.

Perhaps they thought they’d move Bonner/Dice. Novak is a near Bonner clone. Now that Bonner isn’t moving, Novak is redundant.

Wow they gave up alot for him. So if we face the Lakers their starting lineup is fisher, kobe, metta world peace, troy murphy, and howard. I like our chances even better.

Won’t comment on that till it happens but there is really no excuse now for us not to have at least two bigs on the team before the season. I just read that the Bobcats traded for a big from OKC for a 2nd round pick. Really? We have alot more to offer teams than just a 2nd round pick.

He is a 7 footer. The Bobcats said it addresses a need for the team.

Byron "Don’t call me BJ" Mullens. Hardly the type of big we need. I’d trade for Diaw, though. Or even Diop if he loses a few pounds.

The odds of getting a serviceable big man just dropped significantly with McDyess’ contract now off the books. I just don’t see how a trade gets done unless they trade RJ, but who’s going to take him?
RJ can still be traded but it means someone is going to need and want TP bad enough. The team that trades for TP doesn’t necessarily have to take RJ on, it could be a three or four team trade.

During the draft, I thought the Spurs should have picked up Julyan Stone from UTEP. Here’s a write up on him:
(Darm Nuggets picked him up!)
http://www.roundballminingcompany.com/2011/12/17/notes-from-fridays-scrimmage/
“Now for Stone: This kid was REALLY impressive. His handles are just flat-out sick and the way he utilizes his lanky frame to penetrate then dish to open teammates is NBA-ready without a doubt. Throughout the night I just kept thinking, "Shades of Rondo, shades of Rondo," as he made one pinpoint-precise pass after another. His court vision is phenomenal, almost as if he’s got an expanded field of peripheral vision. I’m not even kidding when I say he might be the best passer on our team already. Otherwise, his shot is a work in progress. He did hit a three but his mechanics are definitely funky as the ball seems to come out almost spinning sideways. He seems committed to fixing this aspect of his game though, and if he ever gets to the point where he can consistently knock down a 15-footer, he’ll be something else. More than anything though, I loved his aggressiveness. While training camp invitees Cory Higgins and DeMarre Carroll blended in like blue and yellow camouflage, Stone was out there trying to prove something to his coaching staff. From the very second he entered the game to the last whistle, he was showcasing what type of player he was and certainly didn’t disappoint. In his Nuggets debut, Stone finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists.”
"If you run, you'll just go to jail tired!" TJ73
I’m all for us getting any big we can. I mean a 7 footer would still be a huge improvement over Blair IMO. A 7 footer could block shots and even if he didn’t at least when he puts his arms up he will alter some shots and pull down way more defensive rebounds then Blair. Releasing Mihimi is looking like a really bad move.

It’s time for Blair to go. Some one else should get a chance. Blair is not the answer. We know how far we can go with him in the line up. We know what we get with Blair no defense and not very good offense.
by spurlover on Dec 20, 2011 10:31 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
You are going a little overboard with our starting C. Granted I wish we had more traditional one or at least that he improved his footwork on defense, but I am not ready to pick up 7 fouls in 5 seconds Mahinmi or just anyone else. Blair started 65 games for us last season helping the team to the best record in the west. Here is to hoping that he gives us enough reason for him to start 82 games this season.

Spurs were 51-12 with Blair in the starting lineup and 10-9 with him out, so the team was actually pretty good with him starting. Yes, he does have deficiencies in his game, but he also has a nice skill set: rebounding, passing, and quick hands and feet along with a high BBIQ. He just needs to focus on utilizing his skill set and girth to his advantage. Not sure who you have in mind to replace him because there isn’t much left in FA. I wouldn’t mind the Spurs picking up Przybilla, Fesenko or even Elson, but that would be as an addition to the team, not a replacement for Blair.
You could also make an argument that Spurs were better with Dyess as the second strongest big man in the 2nd unit because Blair/Bonner doesn’t work. Additionally, Spurs experienced their injuries at the end of the season when they dropped games. So the numbers have more to them.

It really isn’t a good argument with Blair. He played the majority of the time with TD. TD is great player and covers up how bad Blair really is. Blair with Bonner exposed how bad he really is. Yea I know Bonner is not great on defense but he does not stink it up as bad as Blair or ride TDs coat tails as much as Blair. Let me just ask how much you believe that argument that we won alot of games with Blair in the starting line up if TD goes down for the year and say Tiago is injured most of the season. Which is very possible this season with no front line depth.

Why does that sound like such a bad deal? Pau is an outstanding player, but how many years does he have left? Can they win as they are now? They just gave up Odom for nothing.
Howard and Kobe even just with 10 other D leaguers on the roster still sounds good and might actually work. But they are trading the entire frontcourt for Dwight, can he really replace all of those guys? If Odom was a salary dump, then it wasnt for naught.

I think the Spurs have done a decent job of replacing that with more than one player. It’s better to have a team oriented towards defense than try to find “the guy.” The problem is the front line is super thin. Otherwise, the Spurs would likely have a pretty damn solid team through the whole lineup.

I went. It was plenty fun. &erson and Kawhi looked good, although Kawhi couldn’t make most of his shots, but he did hit a 3. He also had a few steals (3?), one leading to a fast break with &erson. Green looked pretty good as well. I’m glad we kept him. Joseph and TJ Ford also did fairly well.
One of our pick-ups, Gani Lawal (sp?), showed some promise (he posterized Splitter at one point) and will likely make the roster, at least for a while, since we have 2 free spots for bigs.
That Luke Zeller guy was awful, though. He missed all his shots (~4 3’s). He had a face mask on, so my friend called him the Phantom of the Opera, and we shortened it to Phantom, haha.

Since the Spurs are already over the luxury cap I doubt they will keep Lawal or Hassell if they decide to sign a FA. But its less games compacted into a much shorter time frame giving them little time to heal unless Pop gives them several games off. Humphries just got 8 mil for a one year deal with the Nets. I cannot believe that. After seeing that deal and the Chuck Hayes contract (before it was voided), I am now convinced that the Spurs won’t be able to get anyone of any value for 3 mil. Maybe Kenyon Martin, who isn’t even that good, but I doubt even that. There are some really stupid teams out there. I still wish we would’ve signed Troy Murphy for the vets minimum.
I’m glad Spurs didn’t get Humphries. We can complain all we want about Bonner’s lack of D, but if we got Humphries, it would be the same thing with a different name. Murphy is over the hill as well. There’s a reason why he didn’t do much on an old team like Boston.
Kmart and Hayes are the only good ones from the bunch. The one problem is Hayes is small in height.

Didn’t I hear something about Blair’s heart not having any ACLs?

John Hollinger's Regular Season Forecast
8. Memphis

5. LA Lakers
4. LA Clippers
3. SPURS
2. Denver
1. Oklahoma City
Most of these seem probable, but why expect so much from Denver?

He is giving us too much credit too early. I miss the under the radar days.

Aren't 3 of Denver's players
stuck in China for the entire season? J.R. Smith?
by Blue or CONKZILLA on Dec 21, 2011 11:10 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah they are stuck there until the season over in China is over. Clippers are the team of the future, but IMHO are a TAD bit overrated, and Denver shouldnt even be on that list, Mavericks deserve the benefit of the doubt so dont write them off.
Usually what the Spurs do on the off-season is frutrating and mind boggling, but with a shirt in july that says "NBA champions" im totally okay with what the Spurs are doing.
Wilson Chandler is a good pick up, but Spurs are now a little bit packed at the wing position. However, KMart would be a good pick up for the Spurs.

He would certainly help the team, but I am not holding my breath. There are more sexier destinations that will probably offer as much or more money.

Agreed. He’s too high profile to likely end up in SA, but he’d get more play time in SA than in Chicago. However, Miami would give him probably the best experience.

If the big 3 want him around, i think the FO would make an effort.
