NBA Player Movement Talk-o-rama Part 2

We're going to do this again, since the original thread is closing in on 500 comments. Stop me if you've read this before... Aside from TJ Ford, the Spurs still haven't landed anybody. The Lakers stopped trying to land Chris Paul, and bizarrely sent Lamar Odom to Dallas for a draft pick, possibly as a setup for a Dwight Howard trade.

COMPETITIVE BALANCE, EVERYONE!

(more player movement details below the fold)

Star-divide

So far, these are the known details of who's going where, both in free agency and trades. Please let me know if I missed anything, so I can add it to the list.

Atlanta Hawks - Tracy McGrady

Boston Celtics - Keyon Dooling, Brandon Bass, Jeff Green,

Chicago Bulls - Rip Hamilton

Detroit Pistons - (re-signed) Tayshaun Prince

Miami Heat - Shane Battier, Eddy Curry

Milwaukee Bucks - Mike Dunleavy Jr, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute

New York Knicks - Tyson Chandler

Orlando Magic - Glen Davis

Toronto Raptors - Aaron Gray

Washington Wizards - Ronny Turiaf

Dallas Mavericks - Vince Carter, Brian Cardinal, Lamar Odom, Samuel Dalembert ?

Los Angeles Clippers - Caron Butler

Memphis Grizzlies - Jeremy Pargo

Phoenix Suns - Shannon Brown

Utah Jazz - Jamaal Tinsley, Earl Watson

SAN ANTONIO SPURS - T.J. Ford

_________

Ok, that's all I got so far. Discuss!

Feel free to use this as a DTOUR thread as well, since we haven't had one in quite some time.

I’m pretty sure the Heat signed Eddy Curry. As I recall, Tyson Chandler used to back up the slightly younger Curry on the Bulls. Curry went to the Knicks and had one career year that got his salary raised, and hasn’t produced much since. Chandler went to New Orleans and after a couple of decent years missed several games over the next two, got rejected by OKC after failing a physical, and had a career year last year with Dallas. Based on that, the Knicks have given him a nice raise in order to follow Eddy Curry’s footsteps.

But if they don’t DeAndre is a little overpaid but I’m okay with it since the Warriors really need defense. The dumb part is that to make cap space they plan to amnesty Charlie Bell, an expiring contract, instead of Andris Biedrins, our center who has sucked for two years and has three years, 27 million left on his deal.

So no, I don’t like how this deal turned out. Now we have two players playing the same position, both paid like starters, which is not a good idea.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON IN THE SPURS FRONT OFFICE?!!!

Dallas has quietly stockpiled a boatload of solid players: VCarter, RFernandez, BWright, LOdom and up next….expect them to send JET to the Clips for Kaman.

The Spurs have done nothing and will go nowhere this year without a significant move. They do not have the size to compete in the West. They have 3 players…THREE over 6-7 on their current roster. (That’s of course not counting ‘Super’ Luke Zeller. Someone said he was like Splitter…he’s actually much more like Bonner. The guy plays very little defense and was little more than a 4pt/2 rpg role player at his peak at Notre Dame. If you hate Bonner, you will despise Zeller. We have done some moves in the offseason to address some of the problems

Trading G. Hill for Kawhi Leonard was a big move. We address the backup SF problem with that move.

The TJ signing is good, we had a problem in the backup point and I think that move was good.

We have tried to get a new starting SF, but it have not work yet. But I don’t see that as a big problem for the Spurs especially now that we have some real SFs to back up RJ in Kawhi, Anderson and Butler.

And I’m pretty sure that we are going to get a quality big man before the season starts. The FO is not going to let Dice contract go to waste and they know we need help in that area.

I agree with you, and I think it’s important to remember that this team won over 60 games last season. I get that it’s all about the playoffs, but that’s a lot of wins. The Spurs didn’t need a major overhaul in terms of talent and their cap situation is fine. All they need is a big who can guard the PnR and is a competent post defender. Unless there’s a possibility for a good trade that doesn’t compromise the future, I’m good with minor changes.

They need guys for the season that can give the big 3 more days off for the playoffs. That is a big reason the Spurs had trouble at the end. This is why I agree that minor changes are better. Hill for Leonard and Ford seems like a good sacrifice. That said, Hill wasn’t a point guard, but he required time at the the 2 or 3 which caused size matchup problems. Now Anderson has more opportunities and so do Butler and Green who both are really bigger.

Exactly.

I think our last chance is getting Kaman, hopefully we can dump Blair in that deal. Otherwise, I’d just rather keep RJ and hope to sign a quality free agent next summer when the Spurs actually have some cap space. However, I fully expect the Mavs to get Kaman.

by wildcat110 on Dec 11, 2011 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

You’re wildly overrating Kaman. Allow me to quote my good friend Mike Payne:

When Chris Kaman was on the court, the Clippers offense was at its worst. When Chris Kaman was on the court, the Clippers defense was also at its worst. It’s easy to just look at his numbers, 19 and 9, and think— wow, that man is dominant, and that kind of talent could make our team so much better. Thing is, you really need to look at how those numbers are generated, how the opposition performs against it and the ultimate outcome of the most important metric— wins and losses.

This last season, Chris Kaman was 2nd on the Clippers in terms of minutes per game (2608). However, he was worse than every other player on the Clippers team that played 500+ minutes in some of the most popular advanced metrics. ORtg, Offensive Win Shares, WinShares per 48 minutes… the worst of all rotation players. So how can a guy who scores 19 points a game have a negative impact on team performance on offense alone?

Turnovers and poor shooting. Funny enough, Kaman’s turnover rate went down from 20% last season, but he still managed to rank second amongst centers in turnovers— right behind Dwight Howard. Howard, however, draws twice as many free throws per game and shot the league’s highest FG% last season. Kaman, however, was the worst non-stretch center in the league in terms of shooting efficiency. It’s okay for Mehmet Okur to shoot 46% when a third of his shots are attempted from behind the 3-point line. Amongst centers that don’t attempt threes… Kaman is the league’s least efficient.

So in practice, that means that once in every seven possessions that he controls the ball, Kaman will turn the ball over at least once, not quite make three baskets— leaving his team with between 4 and 6 points every seven possessions. It’s play like that which makes you amongst the league’s worst centers to ever score 19 points a game. It’s play like that which decimates your offense.

Now you take a guy like Ben Wallace. He’s a terrible scorer, but how could a guy like that put up one of the league’s best offensive ratings at 116 (to Kaman’s 99). First, offensive rebounding— nearly twice the rate of Kaman. This gives the Pistons at least an additional possession a game. Then, when Wallace actually takes a shot, he shoots more efficiently than Kaman. He turns the ball over 1/3rd as much as Kaman. And for a player with a much lower usage rate, he records pretty much the same passing numbers as Kaman. At the end of the day, your team scores more baskets with Ben Wallace on the court than it does with mr 19 points a game Chris Kaman. These are the emptiest of points, points that take far too many wasted possessions to get ahold of.

This doesn’t even begin to mention Chris Kaman’s defense. I’d gladly go into just how terrible he is on D (which is even worse than I think people let on), but I kind of expect people to already see that. Thing is, people think— 19 points, 9 rebounds, that’s awesome. But if you completely take defense out of the equation, he STILL manages to make his team worse when he’s on the court by shooting poorly, turning the ball over and never passing for a guy at his usage rate.

Honestly, and I can back this up statistically, the Pistons would be better off with Jason Maxiell as our starting center 82 games a year. We would win more games and play more effectively.

And this isn’t me getting all rainbow’d on Maxiell. Dude is a 6th man in the best of times. But I say that to show how ineffective Kaman is, and how our second big off the bench is already better than the Clip’s scoring starter. What’s more, we don’t need to use our best trade asset and a pick (which would be a new level of brainless) to get more efficient production on our court. This from a guy who doesn’t even have the body to play center.

As for Kaman "balancing the roster", it shouldn’t take a trade to do that, if the aim is only to make our players more comfortable. By "balancing the roster", we should be able to bring in real talent in other positions. If not, we should be able to get out of our bad contracts. Kaman provides neither.

(only note— Kaman’s defense improved quite a bit in 2010-11, sorry for those who have read my Kaman wall-o-text before)

Keep in mind, when he’s talking about trades and what not, he’s talking about that from the Pistons perspective. That does not, however, change the fact that Kaman sucks.

Thing is though, I have always liked Kaman. I would agree with the above observations more if we were discussing Kaman as a potential starter, as he is. McDyess isn’t coming back and even if he did, is too old to survive this season’s brutal schedule. I would 100% support a McDyess/Bonner/Blair for Kaman deal b/c A. You dump our two worst interior defenders, B. Improve interior scoring (a problem for the Spurs in last year’s playoffs. Blair is averaging only 3.9ppg and 3.3rpg in two playoff seasons and Duncan only averaged 12ppg last playoffs, almost 7ppg below his previous low.) and C. Free up enough cap space for next off-season to sign a big-name free agent—assuming the Spurs hold onto RJ for one more year and Duncan either retires or re-signs for a fair price. Kaman is on the books for just this season at 12 million. Its not as if you’re making a long-term commitment with Kaman Islands.

by wildcat110 on Dec 12, 2011 10:20 AM CST up reply actions

You’re only looking at his ppg averages. If you look at how many touches it takes him to get those ppg, it’s pretty obvious that Blair and Bonner are roughly the same quality. Kaman is not a significantly better defender than either of them.

While I doubt Dyess is coming back, it wouldn’t surprise me if he did, and he would have no problem playing 15-20 minutes/game this season.

I don’t get why they want Mayo when they have P. George and everyone’s favorite long-armed former Spur.

First you must find... another shrubbery! Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle. Then, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forrest... with... a herring!

by Tim C. on Dec 11, 2011 11:06 PM CST up reply actions

They have a man crush on Mayo and his “potential.”

Mayo would take the 2 spot and George gets the 3 spot. I think they will then try and move Granger (to bolster their other talent) is it goes well with the other developments. It seemed to work well when he was out last year in the post season.

The problem I see with the two trades is that it perpetuates an idea which I don’t know is true or not. The CP3 trade stood to benefit both the Rockets and the Hornets as well as the Lakers. The Odom trade benefits Dallas.

Well, define “quality.” We were never going to get a marquee player this season short of trading away half our team. I honestly don’t have a particular player in mind, but with all of the movement and amnesty stuff going on, there still may be a few finds out there.

Then again, we got very little out of an injured Splitter last season. Maybe having him healthy and more integrated into the system is the real answer here.

It doesn’t have to be a great big, just someone good enough on defense to balance out Blair and Bonner. Tiago should play a lot better this year, and I think that’s going to be a bigger upgrade than any big we could realistically get. Internal development and chemistry are going to be the key this season IMO.

Maybe we could emphasize on defense. Have we tried that yet?

I’m pretty happy with us not going nuts this season and then working it all out next year.

We’re at $73 mill in payroll right now.

Timmy comes off the books next year and we’ll be at $44 mill in payroll without having blown our amnesty.

If we need to we can get rid of RJ (hopefully Leonard Cohen has become a starter quality defensive SF with a corner 3 a’la Bruce).

That’ll drop us to about $34 million + whatever it costs to fill out a roster that featueres Manu/Tony/Tiago/Anderson/Bonner/Blair and short timers.

Can re sign Timmy at a lower number if he doesn’t retire and throw money at a free agent or two.

IMO Stand with what we got this season.

Yeah, plus I think there’s a good chance that Lorbek will sign with us next summer. Tim C. said that he could’ve been bought out for this season (and wanted to), if it weren’t for the lockout.

So,
PG – Tony, Ford, Joseph
SG – Manu, Neal, Anderson
SF – Jefferson?, Leonard, Butler, Green
PF – Duncan, Lorbek, Bonner
C – Splitter, Blair, + FA?

We’ll know by next season if we want to keep Butler and/or Green. Hopefully one or both are worth it. I also think that Kawhi will be a capable starter, but we’ll see.

It is, but the Spurs lack height in their big men. Bonner and Blair are not enough, sadly. And Duncan needs to play less. Splitter will likely be awesome, but that still isn’t enough. Dice isn’t likely coming back.

Spurs will do their due diligence, so if he were somehow on the team, I know the Spurs did their home work. That doesn’t mean the FO/Coaching staff bats 1.000, but ithey generally call it right.

Don't look far... Splitter is ALL we need!

I’d say that the FO is confident about our front line this season… and I believe that we Spurs fans should be as well. Proof? We actively pursued Caron Butler and Josh Howard instead of focusing our money on a biggie… this only means that the FO believes that it’s in the SF position that we most need an upgrade, particularly defensively. Although I believe that Leonard and a healthy Anderson would be a decent combination at that position,

Caron Butler was so good a scorer for us to pass up on, reason why we tried (albeit we failed) to snatch him from the FA. Pop doesn’t trust rookies that much and I think that’s one of the reasons for the move on Butler. Leonard is a rookie and Anderson is, well, still practically a rookie if you count a full 82-game season… Pop didn’t even trust Tiago that much to give him enough minutes to match up against Memphis’ bigs. That being said, I think we’re better off with Jefferson around. He’ll be better with Pop’s system this third year.

I’ve said it before (perhaps somewhere else) and I’ll say it again. Tiago was our best chance at stopping the Memphis giants last season. Pop just doubted him a little too much.

Now, I’m quite confident Pop trusts Tiago more. He’ll probably even start alongside Tim. Blair has no business playing C. He should come off the bench and play PF, where he’ll be better defensively. Dice should also come back and play backup C/PF. Tiago is a young stud and can play major minutes, which could be helpful in two ways: first it will alleviate Duncan’s and Dice’s minutes especially on busy schedules and save them for the playoffs.

I’ve never been as excited for this season than in recent memory. The big 3 should be healthy. Tiago and Neal should be better. Leonard and Anderson are highly underrated. TJ Ford should be an able backup and Joseph has the Spurs pedigree!

Need I say more?

Pop is on record saying that the biggest improvement that the Spurs need are at the front court positions. Improvement coming from within is great. However, it may not be enough to account for slippage in Duncan’s output. The team very badly lacks interior scoring from their bigs and defense is porous at its best.

by Heman on Dec 12, 2011 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

I wish I were that excited.

Pop’s biggest complaint after the series was lost was regarding the front line.

I’d hold off on the ‘Tiago is a stud’ talks as well. He might start, and he might have been the ACB MVP, but I don’t ever see this guy being more than a 10-11ppg/6-7rpg player.

Spurs need more than Tiago, because they lack depth, not because Tiago won’t be good. Duncan needs to rest more. Dice is likely gone. Regardless if Tiago is close to an all-star, Spurs still lack size outside Duncan and Tiago. And Duncan isn’t the same Duncan. That’s a problem.

I got a a few problems with Tiago…

He hasn’t displayed a single go-to move in the post.( That left hook is ineffective as it currently stands)

He can’t hit a jumpshot to save his life, from anywhere.

His free throw percentage is unacceptable, he’s like in Shaq territory.

Honestly, he should have all three of these things. Thats the bare minimum I would accept from a Euro MVP. He needs alot of work.

He does however, run the floor well on the break, is a good man and help defender, and seems to be a decent passer. He knows how to P&R well, but hes not finishing often enough or strongly enough most of the time off it.

It’s only speculation on my part and I’m probably wrong. I’m wrong most of the time, anyway.

First you must find... another shrubbery! Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle. Then, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forrest... with... a herring!

The RJ trade itself wasn’t bad, it was the new contract that made little sense. Hopefully the offer to Howard is a one year deal for the mini-mid level, in which case the Spurs could hold onto RJ and amnesty him at the end of the season.

I somehow think it still happens in some form or another. Although, I would argue that one side will cave. It’ll look better for Stern to take the deal with a little less talent. Although I could see the argument for him pushing for everything to say “look at this deal that I got for CP3 rather than the past one” he’s over compensating now, so hopefully he thinks clearly and pulls the trigger on a slightly less aggressive deal.

To be honest, in spite of what Stern is doing, I don’t get why CP3 is throwing such tantrums. It’s his job to play whoever is paying his salary and when he is a free agent he can freely choose. The only ones in this scenario allowed to throw tantrums should be Hornets FO. And even they should understand they are screwed until there is an owner.

In my books CP3 is only solidifying his punk stature with all these reactions and twitter comments. Some comments almost read like life is extremely hard for him. I know everything is relative but still a little bit of perspective wouldn’t hurt!

He’s acting like this because a president has been set by Melo, that players can act this way and get traded to where they want to go. The bottom line is the team is trying to get something for him, as we all know he will bolt next year and the league is keeping that from happening.

CP3 is a punk, but so are most of the stars in this league. The league has gone to far in it’s star promotion to cut back on this kind of behavior.

CP3, Mello, LeBron etc. put in years of time starting at rookie scale, etc., etc. They did more than enough for their franchises. They deserve to use their upcoming free agency to influence their future.

The owners get draft rules, contract & trade restrictions and the one thing players get is free agency. I’m sure none of you guys would be this way but some fans are against the free agency rules because their favorite team is not high up on the list of preferred free agent destinations.

I agree with you to an extent. If he would’ve not said anything or lied and said he wanted to stay and then bounced as soon as free agency came around he would be looked at like a villain. Don’t believe me look at Bosh and Bron. Neither one of those guys demanded a trade and they were hated because they didn’t inform there front offices that they wanted to leave.

Now I agree CP3 should just be a pro and keep working out and getting ready for the season because he truly can only do but so much and there is no need to concern his self with stuff he can’t really change but to be honest he is in a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation. If he just walks as a free agent people are gonna be pissed because there team got nothing for him leaving

One thing i can do...................is FINGER ROLL.

by gunnin' gervin on Dec 12, 2011 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

I see what you are saying. I think him informing the front office ahead of time is great. It’s a courtesy more stars should do, in confidence at least.

Just the reactions to stuff after that is what is a bit silly. Maybe this is something that is a fallout from the negotiations. I believe Paul had a few words to say at some points, especially to Holt. Now he prob takes any league action personally.

by LionZion on Dec 12, 2011 8:47 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

OK, yes. That is fine and very principled. But take a look at what Denver had to contend with last season. If a player wants to leave, he wants to leave. If you can’t make your team attractive enough to him, then you are far better off trading him now and getting players back in return. As it is, Stern is going to force the man to stay put. And in seven months, he is gone, and the Hornets get nothing. That is ridiculous, and everybody loses.

All these GIFs are breaking my browser.

If that is what happens, then it is ridiculous for the hornets FO.

But since Stern’s aim is to sell the team for a high price, I think his goal is to have a good selling portfolio by the end of the season, and for that he will have to facilitate a Paul trade. Any buyer would know a roster with Paul is a farce.

But none of this excuses Paul’s behavior. All this only sucks for Hornets FO.

by LionZion on Dec 12, 2011 6:08 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

Stern is going to make a deal happen. He has to as it’ll make him look better for rejecting the first one. It’s just he needs to not overcompensate and steal all of the other teams players (i.e. Clippers).

by grego21 on Dec 12, 2011 6:47 PM CST up reply actions

This is just ridiculous. What the hell does Stern think he is doing? Whatever it is, it sure isn’t in the best interests of the Hornets franchise.

They got 10,000 people to buy season tickets this year. That is pretty impressive all things considered in NOLA. And what are they going to have to look forward to? The Hornets are now radioactive to any other team that would consider making a trade. Just shameful.

All these GIFs are breaking my browser.

by quincyscott on Dec 12, 2011 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

If Clippers were wiling to do that deal, Stern would get bragging rights. I feel like he’ll ease up after he realizes that he needs to make that deal happen so he/NBA doesn’t look like the bad guy.

If they get anything close to any of the proposed deals, the Hornets will end up with better talent than the original deal.

This is going to be one HELLUVA leap on my part, but the NBA is making it way to easy to reach this conclusion.

David Stern and the league don’t want Chris Paul to go anywhere. They want him to walk, so he leaves that extra year and $20+ mil on the table. Secondly, the league’s bungling of the trades has likely turned the Hornets into an even nastier ‘poison pill’ of a franchise. What potential owner would want to have ANYTHING to do with them now? It’s just absurd.

Sad as it is for me to admit, I really believe the Hornets are going to eventually be contracted. No one will buy them, so no one will move them (again). The league may have no other recourse.

Like I said, HUGE leaps I’m taking here.

by transgojobot on Dec 12, 2011 4:23 PM CST reply actions

Well, CP3 should be a Clipper, but the Hornets are now asking for a lot. If they take Bledsoe off the table, the deal would be done. That said, if Hornets make this deal happen, it’s so much better of a deal for them than the previous one.

If I were the owner of the Hornets, I wouldn’t have let that first deal happen. That said, I don’t necessarily agree that the NBA stepping in to block that deal was a good thing.
