Braszil Lost To Argentina
Brazil lost to Argentina today, and as far as I can tell Tiago Splitter is healthy. Come on home Big guy and get ready for the season. You have done your duty to your country, but its now time to get ready for the Spurs Pre-season. I am very thankful that he made it through the Worlds without injury. I am just as happy that our other guys chose to stay home this year.

Does Pop know that Tiaggo is playing for Braszil as well as Brazil ? I wouldn,t want to be the one that tells him …
The Spurs = Not your granddaddies 7th seed !
Tiaggo is playing for Braszil… and Tiago is playing for Brazil.
Or is it the other way ’round? lol

While I’d guess Splitter is sad about Brazil/Brasil/Braszil/Barbosil getting knocked out of the World’s by Argentina, I like it for two reasons: 1) Most importantly, it gets him back to San Antonio to begin learning the Spurs and vice versa; and 2) hopefully it gives him extra incentive to kick Scola’s butt when the team plays Houston.
I didn’t watch the game, but read somewhere that Oberto contained Splitter somewhat… seems like Manu’s favorite player still has game left in him? I hope that Tiago had an off-night or was tired, because that’s a little troubling (despite Splitter’s performance vs. Odom, Love, and Chandler).

That’s kinda where I was going when I wrote about his play vs. Splitter… we’re on the same page.
Plus, he’s got that hair thing goin’ on…. (assuming that the Samson factor is important)

I would rather had Scola than Oberto. I didn’t watch the whole game, but I thought Splitter looked pretty good, Scola played like a monster, Huertas was the best Brasilian player, and Barbosa was the major factor in Argentinian victory. Even if his line was not that impressive, I thought Tiago did a lot of good things when on the floor. He had a huge block, played good position defense (Delfino was called for a charge), scored under the basket and made couple of free throws in crunch time. He also made couple of stupid mistakes, careless pass on offense and leaving Scola wide open on D. But for most part I liked what I saw from him. Oberto actually looked outmatched to me.

well yeah but the choice isn’t scola or oberto :P
i don’t even want to talk about scola, should be in silver and black but i also think we are donig ok with our team
having said that
unless we can get a true sf to play 10-15 quality min my next person for the last roster spot would be oberto. 1 we can get him and cheap 2 knows system 3 does all the little things 4 wouldn’t have to play more then 5 min a game 5 great in the locker room 6 a little insurance if one of the bigs goes down
Plus: 7. He’s Manu’s favorite player.

you guys convince me completely. when you look for a big #6 for your roster, you clearly can do much worse than Oberto.
8. if Splitter ever needs some extra motivation, Oberto can remind him of a recent game.

Yeah, he could be a great mentor/practice partner for Splitter, pushing him to improve.

Well of course I’d prefer to have Scola than even Fab if all things were equal, but they aren’t. Prying Luis loose from Houston would be expensive… I was assuming that Oberto, even if under contract, wouldn’t cost the Spurs that much (either in salary or players traded).

nothing new, Oberto is superb at defending traditional bigs. And he can do a nice job against non traditional ones that are a bit slow like Dirk.
Oberto was the starting center for the spurs for a good reason, he did every imaginable intangible out there. Defense was one of them

Looking at the box score it appears that the Brazilian guards were doing all the shooting. Neither Varajao nor Splitter had many attempts. Huertas on the other hand had plenty of shots/baskets. Appears to have been a bad game plan, even though Braszil/Brazil only lost by 4 pts.
Yeah, that was Argentina’s game plane from the begininng. The coach even said so after the game. If you watch the game you could see how Argentina’s guards were not fighting through screens, giving Brazil’s guards the 3. It ended up working for Argentina, but let me tell you, every time Barbosa hit a 3, I would yell at the TV. Whenever Tiago got good position near the basket, Argentina would foul. Again, it ended up working, but it made me suffer for the whole 40 minutes.

I thought that game plan was a bit suicidal. And it didnt work alright, Brazil torched us. The only reason we won is that they couldnt defend us either.
One of our main strengths is perimeter defense (Delfino, prigioni, Jasen), so why not focus on that and let tiago and varejao be scorers? They are not the kind of guys that will drop more than 20.

My guess is that they were afraid or bigs would get in foul trouble early. If the guards would close out on shooters too agressively or go through the front of the screens, Huertas and especially Leandriho would have penetrated and neither Scola nor Oberto are shot blockers. They would have ended up fouling to prevent the shot. I didn’t like the strategy either and for a big part of the game it didn’t work, but we won so I’m not complaining.
