Poll: Which vet, if any?

It's been awhile since I've made a poll - life happens - and I had the urge! Shaq recently got picked up by the Celtics this week, and should beef up their front line (with a few miles on it) even more. NBA.com had an article regarding some former stars and roleplayers looking for work. Could any of them help the Spurs? This is probably the best of what's left. Should they make a signing, or stand pat? Discuss. If, if, IF they were to make a signing of the players listed below, who would you pick, and why?

Oberto, I think we need another big guy and Oberto is still pretty reliable. He wont complaint about minutes, he can be a nice mentor for Splitter and Manu is going to be happy.

We had a chance to bring him back last season, and we signed… Haislip. I don’t think the Spurs want him.

Unless there were some other change to the roster where someone is traded away, I don’t think I’d be for adding anyone.

I said none of the above as don’t feel strongly about anyone, but Oberto or Amundson may be able to help with big guy depth. No guards or tweener SF/Guards, we have enough of those. We need a backup SF first, and insurance depth at C/PF second.

Then why not Kwame? Doesn’t at least have league-average defense and rebounding?

Not sure why. Maybe I am just following the herd here, but am not sure if his work ethic and intelligence fits our system, making it too much of a risk. But I honestly don’t know for sure.

My vote is for Amundson. We could always use a guy with his attitude and work ethic.

He seems like he’d be a good addition, if he weren’t the sixth big. Six just seems like more than you’d normally be suiting up. I thought Bonner might be gone, but it looks like they’re sticking with him. Tim & Tiago seem certain to stay. Unless they’re looking to move either Dice or Blair, it would seem too crowded to add Louis.

by Alamo on Aug 7, 2010 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Right…Plus last year he made about 8 and 1/2 (thousand, that is). Shot about 55%.

by indiancharlie on Aug 8, 2010 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I also voted for Amundson, he’s got the right attitude that I think if we promised him 10-15min/game at the 3 or stretch 4 he might learn to shoot the 3… not really, but if he could shoot he’d be the hands down favorite

by RamblingSpur on Aug 7, 2010 2:56 PM CDT reply actions

It might be interesting to see what other players become available once teams have to set their roster for the start of the season. For instance, with Boston signing Shaq their roster looks a little crowded. Will Harangody make the roster or be let go? He had a good summer league, and while I don’t think he’d be too likely to make the Spurs 15 he wouldn’t complain about minutes if he did. There will likely be some better examples, but Shaq’s signing has me curious about if Harangody makes their roster or not.

by Alamo on Aug 7, 2010 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

And Minnesota adding Anthony Tolliver to their roster nearly has me convinced that they are getting ready to deal Kevin Love to the Spurs.

I think Harangody would be a good fit for the Spurs. His draft position was seriously hurt by his injuries last season too so he’d fit in with our other young guys.

by BlaseE on Aug 7, 2010 11:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Isn’t he similar to Blair? I think they are both around 6’7"/6’8", 250lbs….I think he has a little better offensive game, but I’d rather go a little bigger if we were going to get another big.

by GMac14 on Aug 9, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

He think he is more like Bonner because he has some 3 point range.

by BlaseE on Aug 9, 2010 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I watched him play some games at ND and couldn’t remember if he shot 3’s or not. I checked his stats and his attempts for 3 point shooting while at ND went : 1, 9, 38, and 81. Shooting about 32%. So he might have tried to increase his range, which would make him a litlte different than Blair. And so having another big who shoots 3’s would be good, he’d probably just need to increase his makes.

by GMac14 on Aug 9, 2010 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he shot decent from 3 in Orlando SL but not a lot of attempts. At ND, he was the dude, I think we could get him some better looks than he could get for himself in college.

by BlaseE on Aug 9, 2010 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Harangody might very well be in the Celtics plans, he is currently listed as an unsigned draftee. There are already 15 players, not counting Rasheed, on their roster. They would eventually need to drop someone if they want to hold on to Harangody, perhaps rookie center Semih Erden from Turkey. The O’Neals won’t be around for long while Erden could be, but they might feel he would be easy enough to replace. If they felt confident about Erden, it would seem they wouldn’t have signed Shaq. Maybe they’d keep both Harangody and Erden but let Lafayette go. Someone on their current roster would have to be let go if they do sign Harangody.

by Alamo on Aug 9, 2010 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

You were right, Alamo. In the same press conference that introduced “The Big Green Monster” to Celtic fans, Boston also said that they signed Harangody to a two-year, $1.3M contract. Shaq, encyclopedia of basketball knowledge that he is(n’t), didn’t even know who Harangody is, lol.

Does anyone know how much luxury tax the Celtics are likely to pay this season?

I like Jarvis Hays better than anyone else on the list. Backup small forward is the most glaring need right now and he not only defends pretty well, but he hits the three at a fairly decent clip (35.6% career), and should come on the cheap. Not to mention he has better size at the three than anyone else on our roster right now.

Who Should the Spurs Sign

Kwame Brown would be a nice gamble for the VET’S MINIMUM. Maybe he can still turn out to be a productive bench player (10 pts & 8-10 rebounds) with the help of Coach Pop, Timmy, Tony & Manu. Timmy could invest some of his time to show him how to be a low post player, Tony & Manu could show him how to pick & roll to the basket for easy points. Either way, I thnk the Spurs need another BIG MAN (at least 6’10 and above) if they want to compete against the Lakers. Opinions anyone?

by MINI MANU on Aug 7, 2010 10:17 PM CDT reply actions

Since you suit up only 12 players a game, would you ever be suiting up 6 bigs? You won’t be getting much production from the player that is sitting in a sports coat. Which big is your 6th that is not suited up, and how much does it cost for him to be sitting? Unless Tim gets a lot more rest, even your 5th big doesn’t get much more than garbage minutes. Our 5th big last year was usually Ratliff, with Haislip the 6th and Ian the 7th. Ian moved up to 5th because the other two left due to lack of playing time.

by Alamo on Aug 8, 2010 9:05 AM CDT up reply actions

He’d probably end up splitting minutes with Dice at the five. Seems like he would be a better match up against bigger centers, and if he played well enough would allow Pop to sit Duncan on back-to backs. couldn’t hut to try him for the vet min. IMHO

by weaselfish on Aug 8, 2010 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I picked TMac. For the rest of the MLE, for 1-2 years. I think his play with the knicks last year showed he still has a little left in the tank. He’d be a good backup for RJ. I don’t think he’s a liability on D, even though its not his specialty, and he can still create and make his own shot, especially over the backups he’d be playing against. At this point, seeing as how nobody else has wanted him, i doubt his attitude would be an issue. I think he’d play with a chip on his shoulder, and i think he’d carry our bench if Manu is going back to the starting lineup.

In this scenario, i’d see the starting 5 as:
Tony
Manu
RJ
Bonner (who starts at the beginning but does NOT get more than 15-20 minutes)
Duncan

with backups:
George (or you could say Temple here and George at the 2, i think they are pretty interchangeable)
Temple/Neal/Anderson
Tmac
Blair
Splitter

Really, if Manu keeps coming off the bench, he’s not necessary, but i think if Manu is starting we need someone else other than Hill who can make plays. I think Hill will be improved in that this year, but if the shot clock is winding down, and George can’t create anything, pass it to TMac and let him chuck it.

According to Draft Express TMac has agreed to a one year deal with Detroit.

by indiancharlie on Aug 8, 2010 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

So does this mean Detroit sees itself as a title contender rather than in a rebuilding year?

by Alamo on Aug 8, 2010 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he’d play with a chip on his shoulder,

That is actually one of the reasons I am not sure about wanting TMac. He will want to prove something and may be unhappy if he is benched and not given the chance to show up his detractors. That chip can be a double edged sword.

by Ed (dfjmed) on Aug 8, 2010 10:47 PM CDT reply actions

I’ve seen this guy’s name mentioned countless times here, usually with the idea that we could pick him up with something close to the vet minimum. Doesn’t anyone question why he’s still available at this point? One would think that if all he was worth was a minimum salary, the Suns would have resigned him already. I suspect he’s looking for more money than anyone is willing to pay. I suspect that once he realizes that he isn’t going to get it he’ll re-sign with the Suns where he’s had success, rather than come to the Spurs simply to be a sub to Matt Bonner.

I was thinking DJ mbenga for backup insurance. Legit 7 footer.

by cartoonspurs on Aug 9, 2010 6:47 PM CDT reply actions

I really like Amundson — and he played well in the Suns’ second unit against the Spurs — but I don’t think he fits our roster as the sixth big. (Attitude and energy-wise, he is a good fit for the team.) We already have DeJuan Blair, so I don’t know what Amundson brings that isn’t already on the team. Finding minutes for him would be a problem. Oberto, as a backup 7-footer who knows the system, would be able to give Timmeh some rest by playing the 2nd game of back-to-backs, and would be a better fit for the current roster imho.

Jarvis Hayes also intrigues, but I still feel that Anderson deserves a shot as RJ’s backup. His game has some similarities to RJ’s, and I think he is able to get off his shot even quicker. Neal might be able to provide minutes there, as well. If it doesn’t work out, there’s still time to find a player.

Given that the team is on or near the verge of the luxury tax threshold, I’m not in a rush to fill the end-of-roster spots. Does a $1.2M contract bring $5.5M of value to the team? (adding $1.2M tax and $3.1M tax rebate to the $1.2M salary.) The other thing is that holding off until training camp, or the season begins, gives the team some flexibility to maneuver, in the event of some significant injury or unforeseen event.

T-Mac is officially off the market.

* The person, who spoke Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been announced, says McGrady will play for $1.3 million this season.

by Ed (dfjmed) on Aug 10, 2010 9:48 AM CDT reply actions

On the surface, $1.3M for T-Mac, even in his waning years, sounds like a good deal.

But here’s an interesting perspective on this signing. Sad, in part because Dumars was once considered one of the best executives in the NBA.

On another front, the Nets recently signed Sean May…. not that I think he was the right vet to sign for the Spurs, but Coach AJ’s picks are worth noting, if only for the fact that I suspect they’d probably fit into the Spurs system more easily than say, a Knick or a Warrior, and that they may become available for trade or off waivers later in the season.

by freshtunarightofftheboat on Aug 10, 2010 2:45 PM CDT reply actions

Honestly, I hate this deal for Detroit. I would hate it even more for the Spurs. Yes, the talent is there, but the risk of disrupting chemistry is not worth it. It may work out, but you have to weigh the odds. The Spurs have a good team so it is obviously not work the risk.
On paper it is worth the risk for Detroit as they will suck anyway, but Dumars has already taken a similar risk with AI that did not pan out. If this one ends badly it is a big blow to his reputation to have two strikes like that.

I don’t think Detroit has much of a chemistry going for them to begin with. At that bargain price, I don’t see how you could call it a bad deal, especially for a team that most likely won’t be playoff bound.

Not that I think Adam Morrison would be a great fit for the Spurs, but an article over on The Dream Shake suggests that he might be willing to sign for the LLE. And though his confidence has been shaken, he still has confidence in his shot… could be an interesting 4th option for a ‘come-back’ or ‘last-second shot’ lineup consisting of Duncan, TP, Manu, Anderson, and Morrison. But since we also have Bonner, Hill, and Neal available to take the outside shot, I guess that Morrison would be redundant. Oh well…
