Drafting vs Signing Euro/Overseas Players

How does one tell if a foreign player has to be drafted vs just signed??  Why is it we had to Draft Splitter and Nando, where as the big Greek guy Bourosis just wants to able to SIGN with the Spurs??  How can we tell which is which??  There has to be an excellent SF prospect somewhere in Europe that plays excellent defense and can shoot 3's that the Spurs could find and sign.

You would think that Splitter would know intimately which other Euro players are worth chasing by the Spurs.

I’m sure the Spurs have plenty of foreign scouts where they wouldn’t need to rely on Tiago’s opinion.

by Alamo on Aug 29, 2010 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Claudio Crippa is the Spurs’ head scout in Europe. The guy knows enough about Euro players that he made CSKA Moscow relevant(as a GM) by winning the Euroleague title for the first time since 1971. They won the title in 2006, and then again in 2008 with Crippa at the helm. The Spurs hired him last summer.

To answer the SF prospect there is one that comes to mind, Josh Childress. Too bad hes already a Sun. As for Yiannis his contract has 2 years left on it unless the Spurs choose to buy him out.

I think the rule is something like a European player is automatically eligible to be drafted at the age of 22, though they can make themselves eligible for the draft prior to that. Once they are eligible, if no one actually drafts them they are free to sign with any team.

A good player that is eligible for the draft could go undrafted for the simple reason that no team expects to be able to sign him, and so the pick could be wasted. Once a foreign player is drafted, that NBA team retains his rights.

I would just think that Splitter just might have an insiders view of who the quality guys might be that are flying under the radar. Playing against them just seems like it might give him a unique perspective.

by FoldCatOne on Aug 29, 2010 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

But it’s a little like saying that James Anderson might be a good source for knowing other college players that went undrafted since he’d have a unique perspective on players he played against. While there may be a certain level of truth to it, the front office likely doesn’t call in one year’s rookies to get their opinions of players they played against prior to the draft.

by Alamo on Aug 29, 2010 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions

A rather poor analogy – Splitter has played for significantly more time at a much higher level than Anderson. I said he has a unique perspective – not necessarily the Best Perspective – Unique.

by FoldCatOne on Aug 30, 2010 8:31 AM CDT up reply actions

I would tend to think that any quality players that Tiago has played against would not be “under the radar” for the Spurs’ scouting department. They’ve no doubt been looking closely at Tiago, thereby looking closely at everyone playing against him. If anyone looked good playing against Tiago, the scouts would have then been looking at them against opponents other than Tiago, and would have a perspective that goes beyond what Tiago would have.

Tiago would have a “unique perspective”, and the Spurs may be interested in his perspective. I expect though the the Spurs scouting department has spent significantly more time watching foreign players from all of the various leagues that are out there.

by Alamo on Aug 30, 2010 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Somewhere lately I read that Bourosis (spelling) has a very friendly buy out. Seems like something the Spurs would want to take a chance on – we did after all take a chance on Yawn.

by FoldCatOne on Aug 29, 2010 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

We went through the whole Bourosis-courtship last summer. Problem is that he, like most other Greeks, prefers to stay in Greece. He’s not above pretending to be interested in the NBA when his contract is being re-negotiated, but that’s about the extent of it.

I wonder if Splitter having signed and TD at the end of his career, if signing with the Spurs where he knows he would be one of the 2 main Bigs would be sufficient enticement to get him to come. Splitter may be in a unique position to recruit him for the Spurs. I could see a 28 year old, 7 foot, 280 lb Center as having a place here, especially when TD retires. It might even convince TD to play another couple of years.

by FoldCatOne on Sep 2, 2010 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

If we could somehow combine Splitter’s unique position, with his unique perspective, we might have quite a unique situation on our hands.

Here is an interesting list of Free Agents (worldwide) that are available. Interesting to say the least:

http://www.eurobasket.com/freeag.asp?Posit=3

by FoldCatOne on Aug 29, 2010 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

It’s interesting that the #3 is Keith Langford, a former Toros and Spurs player, ranked just ahead of Gary Neal. Langford had gone undrafted after 4 years at Kansas. At #9 is Romain Sato, former Spurs draft pick that didn’t make it past training camp.

If the list is particularly accurate, it suggests that a number of the top players in Europe are simply Americans that went over there after flunking out of the NBA. The first two names are the exception, though Mozgov is no longer a free agent. Perhaps the next exception as far as being a prospect is Serbian forward Velickovic, who is ranked #16. Perhaps the very best European players simply aren’t free agents at this time?

by Alamo on Aug 30, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

The only forward that comes to mind is Viktor Khryapa. He is more of a stretch 4 than a pure SF but he won Defensive Player of the Year in the Euroleague averaging 10 points 6 boards, 4 assists and a block per game while shooting 42% from 3. The problem would be that he might ask for close to the MLE and he is already 28. I haven’t really watch him play that much, but for what I saw he might have trouble guarding the quicker SFs. He is still worth a look IMO.

The Bulls bought out his contract to give him his release back in 2008 as he was frustrated in getting very little playing time. I would expect he’d have very little interest in returning to the NBA.

by Alamo on Aug 30, 2010 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

According to this article from Nets Daily he has resigned with CSKA.

Viktor Khryapa said Monday he will stay in Russia for the next two years, re-signing with CSKA Moscow. Khryapa is a one-time Nets draft pick who was first team All-Euroleague and the continent’s best defender last season. The 6’9" PF was seen as a likely candidate to join the Nets last fall when Mikhail Prokhorov said he hoped his ownership would give countrymen NBA opportunities. Khryapa told the Russian press he had “a few NBA offers”, but didn’t want to ride the bench

So he is out. I should have checked before posting.

I’ve heard during the World Championship broadcasts that Walter Herrmann wants to return to the NBA , but after his awful season with Caja Laboral I don’t think there’ll be any takers.

Rasho signs with Olympiakos

I noticed this morning that Rasho Nesterovic earlier this month signed a 2 year contracet with Olympiakos. At the moment, that would seem to make him Bourousis’ backup. He could wind up being at least his temporary replacement if Bourousis goes to the NBA in Rasho’s second year as has been rumored. Rasho is getting a bit old to be much of a long-term replacement. Perhaps he could take over earlier if Bourousis is ready to make the move and Olympiakos is willing to consider a buyout.

by Alamo on Aug 31, 2010 11:02 AM CDT reply actions

It wouldn’t be a buyout by the Spurs, though – we already used our buyout allowance on Tiago.

Didn’t I read somewhere that Splitter bought out his own contract? Something about NBA rules about salary and buyout amounts?

Hey, if posting a sharp, insightful, yet non-sarcastic comment were that easy, even olf would do it.

NBA teams can contribute up to $500K. The rest of the buyout is the player’s responsibility.

I thought (without knowing anything) that it was 500K per buyout, not per offseason.

im trying to get someone to call me out on it as a typo like “don’t you mean whiplash?” because I know that will win over JRW once people are like “BlaseE has been throwing that shit around on purpose all week ever since JRW questioned its placement in the lexicon!”

The picture technique was questioned but the newbie call out is probably more powerful. Hopefully, that person isn’t reading this though.

Actually, I was thinking if more than one person used it(like me using it in response to you), that might sway the lexicon committee. :)
