I start work again tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing my students but not being back on a schedule. At least I won’t be checking PTR every few hours to see if anything new has happened. ;-)
That’s an outright lie. You’ll be refreshing the main page in between class periods, and you know it!

I teach English as a Second Language to adults(mostly moms with students) in a family literacy program offered by our school district. Tomorrow we are testing students to place them in classes—beginner, intermediate or advanced. I teach the beginners and the advanced on different days. It’s a great program—we have a waiting list of about 40 names. We offer GED classes also.

Isn’t this one of the first rules of the Lexicon? If someone calls you out with a photo, that makes it permanent.
Tony apologist since 2010.
Yeah, but I’m not sure the same rules apply to Spurs players who aren’t members here. I think we need a ruling from The Lexicon Committee.
Tony apologist since 2010.
Photo permanence (as Blase called it) isn’t a hard and fast rule. It’s more like an indicator for inclusion, nothing more..
As to whether tweets from players are viable Lexicon fodder, the precedent has already been set with oppenents. But everyone was so ready to mock Artest, that I’m not sure the success of that typo is a good example.
Blase is correct about the previous discussion of how images can solidify a term’s Lexicon potential. We discussed it, starting here. And since it’s so pertinent to this discussion, I’ll quote the most relevant passage for those who don’t want to follow the link and see the entire exchange:
it takes more than a couple of jumbled letters to put an entry over the top. Sometimes its the feel of the new word, other times its the look of it or how it sounds. Sometimes it’s the way the entire sentence works with the term. And then there are the times when the response is what makes the submission a shoo in, as was the case with brining it.
Lauri’s reply was so understated (just the quote of Cap’s gaff) and the image so clever, that there was immediately a ton of momentum behind that typo. And once everybody thought it was funny, they started using it.
So, I think I’m going to take a wait and see stance with whip flash, and see what kind of usage it gets.
I’m trying to rediscover verbosity. - LatinD
in that case….
I expected you to to be on the bandwagon but your response gave me whip flash.

I love the picture, but I still need some clarification of whip flash. Is it just a typo or are we giving it an actual definition?

I was doing the same. Did anyone watch the game? the box score makes me wonder if Tiago will be foul prone or if it was because he had to guard KD and not a center.

Love, Chandler, and Odom finished with 11 points on 12 shots and no FTA’s, 1 AST, 0 BLK’s, 4 PF’s and 12 rebounds. Most of that is Odom. I can’t see minutes yet on ESPN’s box score.
Durant had 8 TO’s so maybe Splitter did good forcing him into help defense.
In a way, small ball actually worked for the US today. Splitter guarding Durant was prett unfortunate for Brazil, although it sounds like he did as well as could possibly be expected.
Tony apologist since 2010.
While it would definitely be hard to guard KD, I think it was one of Splitter’s first fouls that he shouldn’t have given up. I don’t like his fourth call. I think overall he played well. Very athletic.
I was more impressed by his offense today than his defense. He did a really good job against Odom, got some really good looks, a few of them rattled out though. Overall, i think he’s at LEAST NBA level rotation player. I think he’s probably within range of being on the court to finish games as well. Odom was the first NBA big i’ve seen him go against, and he at least held his own, and i’d say for the most part proved to be just as good, if not better than Odom.

He played well. He was matched up with Odom a lot. He looked overmatched at some points, but held his own other times.
He is slower than I thought he was. I guess I pictured him to be a little more fluid and athletic. My first impression of really watching him was that he is a little more mechanical and stiff. I mean, I understand he’s a 7 footer, but just thought at times he looked a little slow.
As weird as this might sound, watching him play today raised my expectations for him for this season, but also tempered them a bit too. I’m not expecting a game changer, but definitely a solid contributor and a great offseason pickup.
Damn, I was rooting for Tiago and Brazil. Oh well, nothing’s changed though… Coach K still doesn’t know how to defend the pick-and-roll.
And if Alessandra Ambrosio was rooting for my team, wow. I’d be inspired.

I was impressed with Splitter
After the past 3 years of hearing about him from you guys, it was nice to see him in action. While I don’t remember him pulling any post moves with his back to the basket, he was great in the P&R on offense, and not too bad on defense, providing an effective deterrent to USA drives to the basket.
In terms of how I see him fitting in with San Antonio, I think he can play well with Duncan. First off, we have to admit that in the NBA, Splitter is a PF. He can play C at times, but you wouldn’t want him to be you’re main big man for a whole season. Luckily, Duncan has slowly become a true center merely due to age.
So I see that Splitter P&Rs with Hill/Parker/Manu will be deadly, with Duncan in the pinch post or the elbow as the 2nd option if the defense rotates correctly on the P&R.
I think San Antonio just jumped into a definate Top 3 Western Conference contender… as long as everyone else stays healthy. If RJ gets his act together… I’m somewhat nervous.
Eh, I think the two “big” positions are pretty interchangeable at this point.
Tony apologist since 2010.
I mostly agree with your statement, but I was hoping Tandur would explain why Splitter can’t play center.
I don't think he can compete with what most people consider a NBA center
7 foot, 250 lbs and up. I can’t see him, at this stage, being able to compete with Andrew Bynum, Dwight Howard, Shaq, Yao Ming, or Andrew Bogut for a full game or series.
And I forgot to mention that I think Tiago will show good signs this year, but will need atleast one year under his belt before San Antonio can be considered championship caliber. But the issue there becomes age health. What with Timmy, Manu, and TP be like after another 164 games plus 2011 postseason?
I think the Spurs might run into a problem down the road of too many players past their prime, and too many players not yet into their prime.
Somewhat related to your discussion, I’ve been wondering from those who have watched him play, I understand he’s 7 ft.+ and can move well (which is great btw). Does he play above the rim much? I mean kinda like this:

(Just couldn’t resist sharing one of my favorite pics.
Makes me wish the season was here already.)
And I’m asking for real – to satisfy my curiosity.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
is that before or after his 16th knee surgery?

Well, he had been conditioning for European ball so it will be interesting to see how the Spurs condition him. The Spurs have an interesting group of bigs that I think he fits into and complements independent of whether he is playing center or PF. He could also be playing one position on offense and the other on defense.
Blair: Undersized center working towards PF skills and body
Bonner: PF/C height with SF play….
Dice: Undersized center with some PF offense
Duncan: Everything and anything
Splitter: Center height but great complementary fundamentals that really let him play with any of the other 4
RJ: Small ball 4 in hopefully very limited minutes like the last 1 to 2 of close games
All 5 returning players started games for us last year and Splitter is the no contest starter over them all. That’s huge. The main thing we were missing last season was interior height which Splitter helps with. Blair, Dice, and Duncan are a lot of muscle as Splitter gets stronger. I think our team will be able to play those players as well as any other team in the league. Bynum, Howard, Shaq, Ming, and Bogut are all good/great players that no team can slack on. The Spurs are no exception.
Last Regular Season:
Howard 82 games
Duncan 78 games
Bogut 69 games
Bynum 65 games
O’Neal 53 games
Ming 0 games
OK. I am just wondering how much vertical leaping to expect from Mr Splitter. No big deal, I’m just curious and trying to complete a mental picture of him. Plus I’m sure I’ll see for myself soon enough.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
This one good enough to satisfy your curiousity?

Here is a review of Tiago’s performance in the USA-Brazil game, from The Painted Area:
S.A. Spur Tiago Splitter had a solid showing on Monday, but like every other key player, he had issues. Tiago did finish with some dunks, scored on a few hooks and snatched rebounds out of his area, especially on offensive end. Splitter’s defense was tight as usual and showcased his lateral quickness (forced two TOs on Odom). Did a nice job contesting and was stout in screen action, including a monster block on Westbrook from a standstill. Splitter displayed his passing ability from all over, garnering 3 assists, but also made 2-3 careless passes, which helped him pile up 5 TOs.
We thought Splitter showed exactly why we think he’ll be a good fit in San Antonio: he’s a quality NBA athlete, especially in terms of lateral movement and body control, who will be able to defend effectively both in the paint and out on the floor. He’ll contribute on the boards and also in helping with the ball movement on offense, plus he’ll add some opportunity scoring. Tiago’s line on Monday was 13 pts on 6-12 FG, 10 rebs (4 off.), 3 assts., 2 stls, & 5 TOs in 30 minutes.

In a case that could lead to the first local prosecution under a year-old law against online harassment, a San Antonio sports promoter is accused of using a fake Twitter account to badger a television reporter.
Mike Lavender, 36, has been charged with one count of online harassment-spoofing, an addition to the state’s penal code that one legislator said is intended to protect people against anonymous online attackers.
Lavender has also worked as an announcer at Spurs, Rampage and Missions games. He was charged Friday and was released Saturday from Bexar County Jail after posting $3,500 bail.

Argentina and Serbia advance out of Group A. Serbia won head to head.
US and Slovenia advance out of Group B. Brazil’s last game is in 10 minutes.
Russia and Turkey are coming out of Group C. I’m not sure how they do tiebreaks, but Turkey gets the #1 outright with a win over China. Greece is done.
If France beats NZ, they eliminate Spain. If NZ beats France, there is a three way tie between France, NZ, and Spain. I’m not sure what happens then. Lets root for Spurnando to eliminate Spain. France up 20-17 at the end of the first. Lithuania has the Group D top spot locked up with their 5-0 record.
The top 4 teams from each group advance. I don’t think anyone that you mentioned is eliminated yet. The teams eliminated:
Group A: Germany & Jordan. If Germany beats Jordan today, they tie Angola who they lost to yesterday.
Group B: Iran & Tunisia
Group C: That one’s complicated, depending on what China does may be a 3 way tie for the last spot.
Group D: Canada & Liberia
Kirk Penney is one of the leading scorers in the tournament. He’s done fairly well in the D-league, yet when he’s been called up to an NBA team he has only 30 minutes over 6 games.
Look like he played mainly during the playoffs for Sioux Falls last year, averaging 21.3 ppg and 2 assists in 3 playoff games. He had played back in 2004-05 for Asheville, which is no longer around. That was the same season that he last played in the NBA. He’s currently with a pro-team in New Zealand, which might be his fall back team if he can’t hook up with an NBA team. He turns 30 later this year.
In light of this headline from BDL (and to continue poking fun at David Kahn and to continue avoiding work), I propose a fill-in-the-blank contest. Best entry wins absolutely nothing, although I will buy any PtRer the beverage of his/her choice when he/she is in the Denver area.

I’m far from an expert on this but I think the next round looks like this:
Serbia vs Croatia
Spain vs Greece
Turkey vs France
Slovenia vs Australia
US vs Angola
Russia vs NZ
Lithuania vs Puerto Rico
Argentina vs Brazil
These might all be wrong though…..if someone can find a posted bracket, please link it.
So either Spain or Greece won’t get a medal, both having been among the pre-tournament favorites.
The announcers seemed to be suggesting during the USA-Brazil game that there was talk going on that Spain may not have been that anxious to win their group and then have to play the US before the finals. I believe the announcers were dismissing the talk. I can’t see that playing Greece in the first game could be considered better for them.
Serbia versus Croatia to start off the next round. I’m sure that one will be a yawner. No deep-seated resentment and history of violent conflict there, no sir.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
I’d like to wish everyone a happy Labor Day weekend. I hope everyone takes Monday off from work (srsly, even if you don’t currently reside in the US, take Monday off – it’ll be good for you). Yes, I know that tomorrow is Friday and technically I have to work, but I think everyone knows how unproductive I’ll be.
Now I’m off to start spending an inordinate amount of time watching football over the next four days – that’s American football, not that namby, pamby soccer crap. ;) And maybe, just maybe, I’ll spend some time creating some Spurs-related content to contribute to this fine establishment.
Meh… our Labor Day is on May 1st.

I’ve never had a vivid Spur-related dream before… but last night I had a nightmare that Timmy had been traded to Portland.
I was definitely crying in my dream, but when I woke up I was just shaken and really confused. I remember breaking down in front of my dad (in the dream), him shrugging, and me checking Blazersedge just to make sure…

Checking Blazersedge to make sure a dream was really a dream?
Must have been a pretty realistic dream. And since it was so realistic, I feel compelled to ask … who’d we get back in that trade?

No, I was checking Blazersedge in the dream. Believe me, it was weird. I have no idea who we got…

SBN invades your dreams to the point where you’re using it to fact-check weird things that happen in your dream?
Even Dom Cobb thinks that’s messed up!

They had a “Tim Duncan Party Thread,” and with a picture of balloons and fireworks. I can’t fathom who would be twisted enough to plant such a vision in my dreamspace.
