After failing to win a championship...

which of the new "big 3" will be traded first?

Star-divide

In my mind, there is no way that the 3 of them together will win a championship. We've seen "mega" teams like this before (see: Lakers, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Kobe, Shaq), and they accomplished nothing. Plus, Bosh isnt a mega star. At this point, David Lee could still end up a better player than him. Not to mention Blair.

I digress.

So, if you at least agree with the premise that they cannot win together, then you probably agree that at some point one of them will be traded.  I essentially made this just to poll, which of the 3 gets shipped off first?

I’m not ready to leap on the Miami bandwagon anytime soon and I don’t think they will get past Boston or the Magic. But I have to admit, Miami’s three stars are all at their peak while the Lakers star studded lineup featured 3 players on the downside and one who hadn’t peaked yet.

There is no way to make any reasonable predictions until we know who will be the other 10-12 guys playing for Miami next season.

Say what you will about Hollinger, but he has “Team Trinity” as he calls them winning 60 games next year by filling out the roster with players whose PER is no higher than 10…so they could be dangerous

I am sure they will be dangerous. Whether they’d win 50 or 70 games and how deep they’ll go in the playoffs is still to be seen though.

that’s the interesting question. I think there’s no doubt that they will rule the regular season. But what happens when a good defensive team plans against them? (ie: using a clever zone). Will the role players step up? Will Lebron and Wade develop consistent strokes from outside? Will Bosh + player X held down the middle enough?

Here’s how I think you beat them…Make Bosh and Chalmers be the ones that have to step up. It is going to take a ton of energy, but you’ll have to try and figure a way to shut down Wade and LBJ…way easier said than done of course

Garnett worked for Boston. Gasol is working for the Lakers. Malone almost got his trophy with the Lakers. In all likelihood, Miami trio will be scary next year and beyond. LeBron is the league MVP, and Wade was a Final’s MVP. Bosh is a good piece to have if he is not asked to carry the team. The championship is never guaranteed, but they are clearly favorites to play the Lakers in the next year Finals.

Malone and Payton were not superstars the way Wade and LeBron are. They were never two of the top five (and arguably #1 and #2/3) players in the NBA. Shaq was a superstar, Kobe became one, and they did ok before the divorce.

Malone won a couple of MVPs I think and Payton was the best point guard for a while. The thing is, they were old and past their primes when they went to LA.

Yes, they are all stars individually. But to get a championship they have to work together for nearly 9 months.I do not think their egos will allow this. They still need role players around them also. Who else is on their team?

For the team to work Pat Riley would need to step in and teach Bosh and Lebron how to work with others.

Add 3 hungry, atlhetic D-leaguers (maybe one of them who can shoot 3’s) and you have a contender right there. Im sorry, but THEY ARE the team to beat.
Once you have 3 superstars on their prime, and excellent shooter and all around player (miller) and a serviciable point guard that fits (Chalmers) the rest is pretty damn easy to fill with veterans and unproven guys. The top 4 guys would be getting good money, and the rest would be minimum salaries players…..what is wrong with that? I think one of the biggest mistakes made by front offices is overpay for role players….why pay 4mill+ a year for a guy who you can probably replace with a secound rounder or a d-league player without dropoff…

That all sounds good until you consider depth. I dont know how durable is Bosh, but I know Wade is often injured. They need to blow out people with their starters in order to spare them enough. Any injuries and you will have players way past their primes or that have seen less playtime than Mahinmi at the NBA level starting.

All that said, it seems like the trio took enough less money to allow for some decent depth to be acquired.

Riley probably realizes it’ll take a couple years to gel and add complementary pieces via the MLE. I’m sure he’s talked this over with the Huge 3 (or the Huge 2 and Big 1). Unless there’s some kind of Shaq/Kobe friction, which I doubt because these guys seem to actually like each other, I think they’re all in place for at least three years.

Miami might get lucky and win it all the first year, like Boston did. If so they have a chance to dominate for 6-7 years. It all comes down to LeBron. Will he defer to Wade oncourt, like Shaq did? By all accounts he was a great teammate when young and he was properly deferential as a rookie. But years of hyper-enabling accommodation by Cleveland and ESPN may have fried his brain.

by doggydogworld on Jul 9, 2010 9:37 AM CDT reply actions

I think the fact that he signed with them already is an indication that he is prepared to do what it takes. My curiosity is how exactly they are going to fill up this roster. As much as Riley talked to them about the need to build the team the expectations in Miami can only be met with one outcome, a championship. The pressure is going to be debilitating when things go in the wrong direction for any reason.

"If an expert says it can't be done, get another expert"
- DBG

by LasEspuelas on Jul 9, 2010 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think it’ll be that hard to fill out the roster. Miller and Haslem are good complementary players. They’ll probably keep Mario Chalmers, Dorell Wright and Joel Anthony and they’ve got two draftees (Vornado and Pittman?). Bring in a few vets for the minimum and they’re done. If a need reveals itself they can do a weird mid-season Alonzo Mourning sign-and-trade or something. Next summer they’ll have MLE + LLE.

by doggydogworld on Jul 9, 2010 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Like I said before though, if they want to field a traditional lineup one of those big 3 would have to come off the bench! Unless they plan to win in a completely non-traditional way. They needed a sharp shooter and they got one in Miller but how are they going to start games? Miller would certainly have to be on the bench as Lebron should not be facing opposing teams PFs. In that case you start without shooters.

but they would have trouble defending point guards…..but of course I think Spolestra is a pretty damn good coach, he found a way to make a very flawed miami team a pretty good defensive unit by using zones, traps and the like. I think we could see something very special from Miami this year, on both sides of the floor

Miller comes off the bench. Haslem is the PF, unless he leaves. Don’t know why he’d leave but that’s what one report said.

by doggydogworld on Jul 9, 2010 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Haslem is an unrestricted free agent who made over $7 million last year. He’d have to take a $6 million pay cut to sign for the vet minimum. I think he’ll get a better offer elsewhere.

Since Miami started under the cap, they don’t have any exceptions to use, plus they’ve already traded Beasley in order to sign Miller, so I think they can only sign people using the minimums now. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

by CapHill on Jul 9, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Pretty sure they have Bird Rights on Haslem.

Pretty sure they have Bird Rights on Haslem.

I thought so, too, but now I’m not so sure. Haslem had a $10.6m cap hold. The Huge 3 plus Miller come to 47-48m. Mario Chalmers is almost 1m and Joel Anthony is a 1m cap hold. I don’t see how that all fits into 58.044 without renouncing Haslem and losing his Bird rights. And frankly, if they’re still somehow far enough under the cap to fit Haslem’s cap hold they’re far enough under to sign him without an exception. Also, Larry Coon’s article indicates they aren’t using the Bird exception for Haslem and he knows more about it than I ever want to.
