On the 28th day of July, 1977...
... God created....
... Man-u.

And He looked at it and saw that it was...
... a motherf2king wizard.
Happy birthday to the man whose PtR's title bar is dedicated to, and owns the hearts of many Spurs fans.

Just for kicks, a look back at what happened on this very blog a year ago:

This day needs to be renamed. Manu Day? Manumas? Manukah? Manuween? Super Awesome Badass Day?

I vote “Manumas,” as in “We get MORE Manu.”

I was also thinking we could possibly fashion the Manu holiday in style of the ancient Greek festivals and holidays.
We drink tons of wine (Pop approves) and sacrifice a Frenchman.

“On the twelfth day of Manumas,
an Argentinian sent to me…
Twelve jumpers a-fading,
Eleven passes amazing,
Ten dunks a-slammin’,
Nine fast breaks a-blazin’,
Eight seasons a-golden,
Seven clutch shots a-winning,
Six Lakers a-crying,
Five Cuban tirades,
Four Euro-steps,
Three title rings,
Two future Spurs,
And a dead bat in the AT&T!”

The dead bat thing is really underrated. We made a big deal about it for a week, but the hand eye coordination and quickness it takes to snare a bat out of mid air is astonishing. It’s hard to hit those things with a tennis racket when the bat is confined to a small room. Manu made contact in the AT&T Center. Crazy….

When you lay it out like that, it just gets more ridiculous. Any highlight video of Manu’s career will be woefully incomplete without the bat swat.

Oh God, I’m gonna hurl.
Now St Kobe’s Day – that’s a proper reason to celebrate. Lot’s of trophies & rings & parades & crap. (Yes it is customary for Spurs fans to give you crap. Such givers!)
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
I’m pretty sure a quaint little town called Eagle, Colorado has a Kobe day. I don’t think it’s his birthday though.

Yeah, saint might be a stretch for the ol’ Kobster. And to be honest every day is your day when you’ve won back-to-back (going on back-to-back-to-back) championships. Perhaps I should have said St Derek Fisher Day instead.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
Even being a Laker fan, can you not appreciate Manu? His passion, BB IQ, amazing court vision and passing. But most of all his team attitude, no swagger. Maybe you do, that’s why I’m asking.
Derek Fisher has had his moments, some great, some not so good. As a Spur fan I may not like some things he has done, but still have to admire his talent. Even so, he is no where in the same league as Manu.
Timmy D .... enough said.

Hey Ms Smith,
I’m not a Spurs fan so I’ll leave the Manu appreciating to you all. And you guys appreciate him enough already. But I enjoy all the gushing. It makes it more fun when the inevitable happens.
And I thought you would appreciate this morsel from today’s L A Times: “The key to another title was retaining Fisher. You can’t win without Derek. Derek is the best leader probably in basketball.” – Magic Johnson
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
Magic’s such a wonderful analyst. He always cuts straight to the heart of the matter, and never in a homerish-type way.

Magic was a great player. But he lost any post-career chance of being taken seriously when he did The Magic Hour.

The Magic Hour was even worse than The Chevy Chase Show, although choosing between them is like deciding whether you’d prefer to be infected with ebola or contract botulism.

I’m usually pretty sensitive regarding people saying stuff about Magic. But regarding his late-night stuff I have to agree. Not his best work.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
Agree with the comments above about how fun Magic was to watch and how amazine his game was. So I won’t say anything bad about him…but I see what you mean about some of his TV commentary. But he’s still on my good side :-)
Oh I’m fine with his b-ball commentary on ESPN/ABC, etc. But he did a general interest Jay Leno like late-night talk show. It was pretty bad.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
Pretty bad?
Magic was my favorite player growing up. I was always the kid that would argue that he was better than MJ, (this was when Magic was still in his prime and MJ had not become the champion we know him as now.)
However, he was the worst late night guy I’ve ever seen. And I watched those cause I wanted him to be good. But yeah, “pretty” bad is no where close to accurate. It’s like calling Bonner a “pure” shooter or calling Kobe a “good” person. Wrong ballpark, Olf.

I guess I should have said basketball fan. A true basketball fan should be able to appreciate a player’s ability on the court, in my opinion, no matter if that player is on another team.
No one player is going to win a title on their own, even your Kobe figured that out. Manu is exciting to watch, has all of the ingredients to be a Super Star but is a team player. Because that’s what this game is. Makes him more of a Super Star to me.
I love to see old clips of Magic, so much fun to watch. But I had to chuckle thinking how Kobe will take this. If I was Derek I would be watching my back.
Be smug my friend, makes it more believable that you are a Laker fan.
Timmy D .... enough said.
If I was Derek I would be watching my back.
Kobe won’t harm Fisher for he knows Magic speaks truth. He doesn’t want others knowing it, though, so if anyone should watch their back it’s Magic. Kill the messenger, as it were.

Yeah thanks for the opportunity, but no thanks. They got whole sites dedicated to that. They have certainly pulverized it to death on the SBN Laker site. And I am not an actual member of the Kobe all-defense team.

Happy Birthday Manu! Your birthday and mine are only 4 days (and 11 years) apart, and I happily bask in your reflected glory.
In honor of your birthday I’ll speak of your greatness to others. This article by John Hollinger which is a bit over a month old, ranks your performance in game 2 of the 2005 NBA finals as the 21st greatest individual performance in NBA finals history.
Unfortunately, those without an insider membership can only see a stub, if that, and while I would happily cut and paste the relevant section into this window, I’m a bit worried about the legality so I’ll copy what I can a paraphrase the rest:
MIN FGM-A 3PM-A FTM-A REB AST STL BLK TO PTS
32 6-8 4-5 11-13 3 7 3 0 3 27
While these numbers are awsome, they don’t appear on face to be ground shattering. However, if you adjust them on a per-min basis and account for the strength of the opponent, they rank 3rd in all-time post-merger performances behind only Michael Jordan’s game 1 of the ‘92 finals, and Jordan’s game 2 of the ’91 finals.
Thats right it goes MJ, MJ, then Manu G
