DTOUR: Week of 07/19/2010
So in last week's DTOUR, longtime contributor to PtR and photographer extraordinaire, jollyrogerwilco, asked me if I had any new photography to share. At the time, I did not. But late sunday night, the "monsoon" season finally hit the eastern suburbs of Phoenix, where I live. Also, I have a third floor balcony and a camera that can take timed exposures. And so, I give you lightning:
More after the jump.
And, this also happened:
That's what it looks like when a helicopter crosses your field of view during a timed exposure.
So what's new with everyone else? This is a DTOUR after all - what's on your mind?

This is JO3. My youngest daughter. The one in the middle of the five. The study in contradictions. The toughest and yet the whiniest. The nurturer and the instigator. She’s compelled to give butterfly kisses at every opportunity and the only one who consistently has a “favorite song” on the radio.

Honestly, it’s at the point where I’ve run out of things in the immediate area that I find interesting enough to use as subject matter. Well, that and the lack of A/C in my “new” car have sort of forced me into being a hermit.

I like lightnings. I fear getting struck by one, but I still like it nonetheless. I have always dreamed of containing a bolt of lightning in a dark bottle and being able to observe the majestic flow of energy in the limited space inside it.
Nice pics, Tim and jrw! :)

Hey, those pictures kick ass.
I didn’t take this one but since this is a DTOUR. Here is the latest fix Apple is proposing for the iPhone antenna problem.

Nice pics Tim. Next time, if you want to get a closer pic of lighting, you should tie your camera to the end of a kite and fly it during a thunderstorm. =]
As for this iphone picture, I need a little help deciding what new phone to get, seeing as how my old one is currently swimming with the fishes in the hudson. Not to worry though, it wasn’t in trouble with the mob or anything, mostly a regrettable combination of a 1/4 bottle of vodka, a dare, and an innate need to stay off the grid (I wonder why I stick around here then). Anyways, my phone was quite old so I’m not missing much, other than my calls, texts and voicemails (never did figure out how to retrieve them from another phone). So, I figured it was time to get a phone, preferable a nice expensive one that I won’t ever be okay with throwing it on a flowing body of water. I’ve been contemplating on either a Iphone 4G or a Droid X, I also heard the Evo 4G is good too. I asked random people when I went out this past saturday night. By random, I mean mostly girls. I’ve found they’re much more inclined to talk to you once they infer that you have no means of calling them so you can’t possibly be brash enough to ask for their number afterwards, Hah! the nerve on some people. Anyways, final tally count of preference of girls I encountered is 10 for the Iphone, 2 for the Droid, and 2 for the Evo. Again, this wasn’t a good target for my survey, so I’m hoping you guys could help me out and give me your opinions and or facts concerning your preferences. Thanks.

I’m getting ready to get into another phone this month as well and have been researching. I wouldn’t get an iphone even if they were giving them away. Droid’s X and HTC’s Droid Incredible are both faster, far more customizable, have better cameras, and can do anything and everything that the iphone does. Both Droids allow HD viewing, and the X has an HDMI port. And deep in your heart, you won’t constantly feel like a douche for buying into the mass marketing sheeple-fad that Apple survives on. And nowadays, you won’t have to hold your phone at just the right angle or be forced to put it in a case simply to avoiding dropping calls.
Bottom line, I hate iphones and will never go back. I’ve never had the problems with Android that I did with Apple and think you’d be happier with a Droid. Personal story- I could never hack in and stream SPURS games on the iphone. With the Droid I have now (and it’s not even as good as the Incredible or the X), I can watch live games from anywhere.

Also, any idea of the type of bird?

Saw a weird movie about a cormorant once.
Never even heard of an anhinga.
I always knew someday I was going to go viral - Paul "Double Rainbow" Vasquez
Double-crested cormorants are what you see all over Lady Bird Lake. Anhingas are much rarer, but I’ve seen them occasionally as they migrate through. They typically have light-colored necks and white or silver on their wings, if you want a quick way to distinguish.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
The bird actually stayed like that for a long time, which is the only way I could take the pic since the autofocus in my camera doesn’t work. It was from a series of pictures I took at this dog beach in Santa Barbara. I was going to do a post about it, but never got around to it.

I don’t know what kind of bird it is, but here’s another pic of it, in color.

Ouch, that sucks. I have had shoulder problems the last few years. Rehab and come back slowly. I found out the hard way that rushing things makes it take a lot longer.
'What color do you want?" (Tim Duncan)
Yeah, I’m learning that it’s ridiculous. I’ve had shoulder problems in the past so that just complicates things now, apparently. I’m actually just hoping for surgery so that I can move forward; I’m leary of doing rehab for the next 3 months then having to do surgery anyway, but we’ll see. It’s definitely been a slow process, one in which my surgeon has been vocally unsupportive of my passions and endeavors.

by SgtinManusArmy on Jul 20, 2010 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Hate to say this, but your surgeon is correct. Sacrifice a little now to help in the long run. Of course, do some movement to help blood flow, but nothing like Kayaking. Also, yoga really helped me. Partly as it improved my core muscles, helping my posture, which made my traps less tight, so they did not pull on the deltoids too much and mess my shoulder up.
'What color do you want?" (Tim Duncan)
Good advice, thanks for that. I’ll let you know how it’s going and how patient I’m able to be.

Because someone needs to be Captain Bringdown, and because I’m so good at it:
I’ve read (and heard) some real pans.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
I read (skimmed) only one review before I saw it — I like to know as little as possible about movies I know I want to see. (Paradox? Maybe.)
But after I saw it I’ve read several. And I’m not saying that those who are panning it have no points, but I just don’t think they’d be as hard on it as they are if nearly EVERY other critic weren’t raving. Some people just feel that they have to be the counterweight.
I always knew someday I was going to go viral - Paul "Double Rainbow" Vasquez
Then there’s also the inescapable fact that I’m a snob and all.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.

Really? Now I’m going to need to ask for an explanation on this. I could have taken “Not really,” or “No,” and just moved along, but “Decidedly not” needs to be followed up.
I find her snarky, geeky, clever and quite funny. She doesn’t give away the plot, and while I don’t agree with her all the time, I know that I’ll get an interesting take on the movie. Do you mind enlightening me as to the reasons for such a strongly worded preference against the FlickFilosopher?
I always knew someday I was going to go viral - Paul "Double Rainbow" Vasquez
Sorry, didn’t mean to ignore this, it’s just been . . . really suck-ass to be me lately. Buyer for my house just had to terminate the contract after I made repairs I couldn’t afford to make in order to make it easier for her to get FHA financing and they still turned her down without even looking at the house because they said they didn’t want to “risk” financing her. And here’s the funny part. She was offering 100K down. Up front. Cash money, Gee. My realtor can’t believe it. The buyer can’t believe it. No one can believe it. Somehow, I can believe it. I would like to personally thank every banker, broker, mortgage company, and finance institution in this country for really fucking up the housing market for everyone, regardless of circumstance or situation. And by “thank” I mean “destroy slowly, painfully, and publicly.”
Um, anyway, yeah, no real good reason I don’t consider MaryAnn a favorite. She just doesn’t resonate with me. She doesn’t make me think, and she’s never made me reconsider an opinion or outright change my mind, which my favorites occasionally do. I don’t hate her, mind. She just doesn’t make the pantheon.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.

Wondered where I had learned so much about BB, told him he really needs to come to PtR. I know not many females really get and love this game, but there are several on this site.
Seriously you guys have lifted my moods more than once but especially in the last few weeks. Always good for a LOL!

Thanks for the kind words. It was an amicable split, I didn’t know I had that me. I’m not exactly good at conflict resolution, but I guess when you care for someone you can act out of character.
Still hurts like hell though. If I had to compare it to something, I’d say it’s like meeting Jesus. Doesn’t matter if you believe or not, imagine Jesus walking up to you. You’re surrounded by an embracing warm light, you can feel the kindness in him. You know he cares and you feel like when you were a child protected by your parents. Everything is clear, there’s no confusion or doubts, everything is alright and you’re just enjoying the moment with an intensity that cares not for the past or the future, but that precise instant.
Then Jesus is finally close to you and when you think he might say something that could change you forever, he punches you in the stomach. And you’re just left there, pretty effing confused.

I don’t think this is a spoiler, but if you haven’t seen the movie, you might want to skip the rest of this message…
the farther I get from my initial viewing, the more I feel I need to see it again…I left the movie not thinking I’d want to see it again (in the theatre), almost like a heist movie once the heist has been revealed….the more you think about it, the more gray area you see that you need more perspective on
At the end of the movie, I had visceral feelings towards the conclusion. My mind has put up a good fight since then though. I think I need a second viewing to reconcile the two a little better.
You start start including mine, since it flips you back right-side up.

Now that INCEPTION has finally hit theaters, every rumor we hear about Batman 3 carries slightly more weight. The latest, brilliant(est) speculation: Joseph Gordon-Levitt for The Riddler?
Um, I think I’d like to see how he handles bringing something real to the Riddler role. That character is usually usually portrayed as being so manic that it’s easy to go over the top. But I’d like to see JGL make it a bit gritty and real.
You know who’d be good for the penguin? Zach Galifianakis.
I always knew someday I was going to go viral - Paul "Double Rainbow" Vasquez
please no….
the penguin is a brilliant thief with a flair for the dramatic….that would be awesome to see JGL play…he would be a great young adversary for Bruce Wayne and a great foil for Batman as well
The problem is the riddler isn’t dark and gritty….Penguin fits with the other Nolan movies perfectly.
It would tie in with the Nolan’s use of the mafia much better too.

Kingsley would be good for an older penguin, but the nolan movies seem to emphasize the beginning of batman more so than the later years. I’d want to see the rise of a young, energetic Penguin and someone who was closer in age to Bale so we can have some Bruce vs a socialite peer in the Penguin banter.
You know who would make some great villains in a Batman-type movie?
The Van Gundy Brothers.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
yeah exactly, penguin could be a force in the mob world that batman, the joker, and two face and plunged into massive disorder
I liked the rumor last year about Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin. Maybe Paul Giamatti. But JGL would just be really weird for that role… I like him much better as the Riddler, assuming he’s even written into the film.
by DrumsInTheDeep on Jul 21, 2010 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, I’ve always thought of Penguin as a fat dude, so maybe JGL will need to wear a fat suit. Other than him, I strongly like the idea of PSH doing that role. It would be so badass.
