My Open Letter to Tony Parker

Dear Tony,

As I sit here on the slowest, deadest, most boring sports day of the year I am reading PtR, maybe you've heard of it, and I see the lack of faith in you from some.  I know that this is nothing new, you've been berated many-a-time here at PtR and amongst Spurs fans everywhere.  You've been called selfish, a ball hog and even Mr. Longoria.  (That last one's funny, you know it is)  Despite leading the Spurs in assists per game at 5.7 this last year, being good enough to be tied for 13th among guards.  George Hill, considered to be your replacement by the "trade Tony" crowd, manged to only average 2.9 assist per game and that's with you being out 30 games.

Tony_parker_08

We want you doing this for years to come Tony

Star-divide

I guess my fellow fans have forgotten the Tony Parker of 2008-2009.  When you averaged 6.9 APG (good enough to be tied for 9th among guards), 22 PPG (good enough for 14th among all players) and basically carrying the Spurs during Manu Ginobili's and Tim Duncan's injuries.  Sure that year didn't end well, but the Spurs wouldn't have been there had you not been a beast for the entire year.  You then played for the French National team all summer and pick up a season long nagging injury.  2009-2010 wasn't your best year.  Where you slower?  Sure.  Where you hampered by injuries?  You bet.  Are you done?  Only time will tell.

You've been a Spur for a very long time and you've been molded by Pop to the be the kind of point guard he wants for his system.  People miss that.  If Pop wanted you to pass more or first he would have yelled at you until you did that, or gotten rid of you.  The fact of the matter is, your one man fast break keeps teams off balance.  Your ball-handling and quickness cause match up problems for every team the Spurs play.  Your ability to create your own offense, break a team's defense down as well as hit the open man is invaluable to this team.   You've consistently gotten better over your career and have been content playing second and third fiddle to Timmy and Manu.

A member of the Original Big 3

Some complain that you can't shoot the three ball.  The 18 foot jumper you've developed works just as well at stretching the floor and keeping teams honest.  Your willingness to get to the rim and take hit after hit is a tribute to your toughness.  Tony despite the perceived arrogance and aloofness, you have conducted yourself as a Spur throughout your career.  Learning from your mistakes, being willing to improve your game, being willing to listen to constructive criticism, and being a team player.

George Hill is a good player and we all like him.  We hope that he will emulate you in the way you've gotten better and better and how well you finish at the rim.  We hope that he has a great career as a Spur, but he is not the speedster and scorer that you are.  He can't run or guard the pick and roll like you.  Help him Tony, help him become more confident and consistent.

I for one hope that you don't listen to the folks who say that you suck, are finished, or are only worth a couple of role players.  If that was the case I don't think teams would line up to snag you (i.e. Knicks and Trail Blazers).  I speak for most Spurs fans when I say we appreciate you Frenchie McWonderbutt.  We have enjoyed watching your grow as a player and we hope that you recover this summer and come back as good as ever.  Let's face it, when you're on, there are only a few point guards who can hold a candle to you and none that can check you.  Stay strong Tony, rest up and we'll see you when the season gets rolling.  We look forward to more of this:

Great job Big50. Your fanpost puts mine to shame. I think sometimes us Spurs fans don’t realize how lucky we are to have seen players like Tony in the Silver and Black.

Thank you Big50. I do think the Tony detractors are a small minority, but they are so vocal that it is difficult to determine that from a quick read of the posts.

Good post. I always thought that the frustration with Tony comes from knowing that he can pass. There are games where he shows he’s got the skills to be one of those pass-first showtime point guard that make us drool. So when he doesn’t, it’s that much painful.

Hill, on the other hand, has yet to prove he has it in him.

As I stated in Edge5’s post, Tony does what he does because that is how he was trained. He would not continue to do it if Pop wanted him to do something else. He does it very well. When needed he can pass. He just needs more people to pass to.(I believe that he has more this year.)

Actually he makes some sweet passes every now and then, but don’t think he has the court vision to consistently be a pass-first player. I remember him trying to be that for about three weeks last year and it was ugly.

Well put, and rec’d.

I love that he’s taking time off this summer to rest and enjoy time with the lovely Mrs. Parker. And going into free agency, I’ve no doubt that he wants this upcoming season to be a great one.

Parker has endured, not just from fans, an incredible amount of criticism throughout his career. People forget sometimes that he joined the Spurs very young and that he was often the target of Pop’s withering criticism for his first few seasons. How many teenagers do you know have not just the talent, but the mental and emotional toughness to not only survive, but thrive in such a pressure-cooker environment?

And he even has to guts to say “Coach, you crazy?!” but then goes out and does what Coach Pop wants anyway. Gotta love a player like that.

He’s worked his butt off to improve his game. Remember all that criticism about him just being a quick slasher before he worked over the summer to develop his mid-range jumper?

He’s not perfect — I grind my teeth whenever he runs down the clock and puts up a bad shot (but in his defense, it’s usually when nothing else in the Spurs offense is working anyway) — but he’s perfect for the Spurs system. And he deserves our respect for his loyalty, for working hard and doing whatever the organization has asked him to do, and for handling the criticisms by improving his game every year. He deserves better from us.

I love how in almost every single Tony highlight in the second video, he and Manu were on the court together. It goes to show people that think they don’t play their best together (like me) what the reality is.

Manu actually compliments him the best. This allows Parker not to be at conflict (PG vs. need to score). He can switch off with ease since they can trade positions and Manu can take on the ball handling responsibilities. Or Parker can drive and kick and find a guy who will make the extra pass to Manu for the 3-point dagger.

by grego21 on Jul 17, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Tony is the man. I never said he was a bad player and i am one of the people who have said i wouldn’t be upset if we traded him. I just don’t want to see the guy leave and we get nothing in return. I remember when he was a young guy carving up the Seattle Supersonics defense. I was calling Gary Payton the disposable glove to all my homeboys who rooted against the Spurs! I hope he stays and sign’s a decent contract to finish out his career with the Spurs.

Damn, idk what to do with all you people showing TP love (especially you Argies).

Interesting personal tidbit—my second NBA jersey ever was a Parker jersey (my first was a white-on-white Timmeh jersey. I still have it!). Didn’t get a Manu jersey till Christmas in 2005 (loooooooong story—let’s just say that my parents only thinly veiled their desire for the ‘05 Pistons to beat the Spurs because SA didn’t have as many players that, ahem, “looked like us [i.e., black]” :P Needless to say, they gained a ton of respect for the Big 3 after the ’05 Finals and broke down and bought me a Gino jersey lol. Still have that too! Wear it almost every time I go play ball at the gym.

Ok somebody give this fool a time out. Seriously. This is the 2nd or 3rd time within the last 24 hours he’s gone off on some little rabbit trail with little provocation. He’s unfit to handle PtR during the offseason.

The only problem I’ve ever had with Tony is the same problem I had with Manu, that they played for their national teams and risked injury and getting worn down even though Timmy’s championship window of opportunity is clearly shutting very quickly. That said, the whole reason I cared about and was frustrated by those decisions was because of how valuable those guys are. Tony may not fit the J. Kidd mold of a PG, but he is in a lot of ways the prototype for the new breed of Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall type PG’s that are now flourishing all over the league. The league has basically custom made the rules to benefit speedy perimeter players like him that can get to the rim, and he has the perfect game to take advantage of it with his floaters that he can drop in even when he’s “among the trees.” Plus, I don’t think he gets enough credit for how important he is in terms of putting a lot of pressure on other teams PG’s to guard him on the offensive end. In the past, he’s been able to force Nash to expend a lot of energy chasing him around, or even more importantly in match ups with the Lakers, has been able to absolutely torch Fisher. If we want any chance to win the West this year, we’ll have to go through the Lakers, and Parker is a key part of that puzzle because he can exploit the Lakers biggest defensive weakness.

What ever stopped you from using that phrase when we were not even playing Fisher? I see no reason to not use it when Hill is playing Paul or when Nash is playing Williams.

We kept it in the previews for a while, as it seemed good luck. But then we took it out at some point – mojo-related, perhaps? I think we should start out the season with it again, assuming we don’t trade Tony, of course. ;)

by CapHill on Jul 19, 2010 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I think I did not convey my question properly. The initial gaff happened while Fisher was not even playing against the Spurs. So I see no reason to not keep using it even if Tony is traded. It could be Hill vs. Deron Williams and you could still use the phrase Tony needs to dominate Fisher. Just for the good luck factor ; )

Picking on Tony Parker is ridiculous. He is the one guy within the Big 3 who we can expect to still be improving his game. He is a must keep if you ask me. Spurs would have a very very difficult time without him.

If he plays anything like 2 years ago or better, the Spurs are going to be super dangerous in the post season.

Word

Tony is awesome. My favorite Spur after Bruce.

He was a child when he met David Robinson for the first time. After that when he and his brothers played ball, it was always Spurs v. Bulls. Now he’s a Spur and helped David win a ring the year he retired. So awesome.

As is the fact that he says things like, “Pop he yells” and “I pass the ball to Timmy” in a broken accent. He’s not a super terrible rapper, either.
