Roster Analysis
As you all know this has been an exciting week for Spurs fans as we finally managed to signed Tiago Splitter. I think must of us know what he brings to the table and no doubt he will be an upgrade and have an IMPACT. But our roster is far from being able to compete with everyone else especially if It's incomplete.
As you know we got Tiago and I think we all had a feeling he would make the jump but what was even more interesting was that he didn't use the full MLE which some GM's around the league said would be required to even make him think of leaving Spain. Of course he only got a little over half which I think only made it sweeter to us fans and showed once again we have the greatest FO in the league. But to some Spurs fans Splitters signing was overshadowded by the re-signing of Matt Bonner. The deal was reportedly for 4 years for 16 million. I know some people think he was already overpaid but honestly he knows the system, can spread the floor, great locker-room guy, and loves to eat sandwiches. Guys like him don't show up at your door-step and while I know we could of maybe found somebody better, which is highly unlikely but still his ability to spread the floor helps us create match up problems and it just gives us another tool. Enough about Matt but as of know our roster looks something like this.
PG: Tony Parker, George Hill, Garret Temple
SG: James Anderson, Manu Ginobili, Malik Hairston
SF: insert athletic, defensive, 3-point specialist SF here
PF: Tim Duncan, Dejuan Blair, Matt Bonner
C: Tiago Splitter, Antonio Mcdyees, Matt Bonner
At the PG position we have our solid rotation in Parker and Hill and while Temple has an unguaranteed contract I firmly believe he will be on the roster since he fits into our system and hes shown hes a reliable backup for realtively cheap. SG I have Anderson starting just because I also believe that Ginobili will return to the bench and unless we nab a SG in the free agency Anderson is the "One". Malik has an unguaranteed contract just like Temple and he will be on the roster next season just because the Spurs love his defense, and energy and once he shoots the 3 at a better clip hes pretty much guaranteed to be on the roster if not already guaranteed. SF has nobody and I mean nobody there. You could argue that Gee would be there but I think another year or two before the Spurs decide if they want him to be on the roster unless they want him to sit on the bench and learn first hand. PF I have Tim(who else), Blair, and Bonner so were good to go and at Center I have Splitter since I expect him to start and Mcdyees coming off the bench on limited minutes while Bonner will switch between the PF and C position depending on the situation. We have a very strong guard rotation and one of the best in the league while our frontline is set except for the fact that the SF position is EMPTY. Of course who do we fill that position with well let's see. Most of our favorites are already signed to a contract examples include Dorell Wright, Anthony Morrow, Ryan Gomes, Travis Outlaw basically the market of SFs is getting less and less everyday. I expect RJ to be back just because nobody wants him. It was said he wanted to play for either NY or NJ but NY has Chandler and Gallinari and NJ signed Outlaw so I don't seem him going to either. Plus it's been reported that he would return to the Spurs on a friendlier contract which wouldn't be bad in my opinion especially if we can get a good deal. So while RJ might be back then we find ourselves looking for a backup SF. We currently have about half of the MLE, the LLE, and Vet's minimum to find such players. SF's that are left that we should target are James Jones who I hear the Spurs are already looking at, Raja Bell who I hear said it will either be the Spurs or Lakers but preferably the Spurs, Rasual Butler and basically there are others but thats about it who I'd like to see in a Spurs uniform. I expect if we sign either Bell, Jones, or Butler we will have to use the rest of the MLE which wouldn't be all bad especially since they will fill some of our needs. I can also see us using the Vets minimum to sign another big or another SF aka Bogans. He would sign for cheap and he knows our system and if hes a third option for SF I don't think we can do better. Or say if we get Bell for the rest of the MLE and use the vet's minimum on James Jones then that would be solid option too. Then with these signings I see our roster looking like this:
PG: Tony Parker, George Hill, Garret Temple
SG: James Anderson, Manu Ginobli, Malik Hairston
SF: Richard Jefferson, Raja Bell, James Jones
PF: Tim Duncan, Dejuan Blair, Matt Bonner
C: Tiago Splitter, Antonio Mcdyees, Matt Bonner
With that we have a great starting lineup and one of the deepest benches in the league which will be helpful defeating teams without bench depth see Miami's Triumvirate and one of the sexiest rosters on paper to boot.

Nice. I would start Hill at the SG spot, but have not seen Anderson play yet so who knows. It would be nice to get some clarity on the SF situation. I like that we are two deep + Ginger at the PF and C positions, but would still like to see another backup big man. Not enough depth there considering that we want to limit minutes for Timmeh and Dice.
'What color do you want?" (Tim Duncan)
Nice post. I like the look of that final lineup you listed but I doubt we can get both Bell and Jones. Anything can happen though. George I think will start next to Tony as well as be the backup pg so it would give Anderson some time at the 2 to provide more rest for Manu.
"I've got Tim (Duncan) and you don't. That's the difference." -Gregg Popovich
In order of minutes played at the position:
PG: Parker, Hill, Temple
SG: Manu, Hill, Anderson, Hairston
SF: Jefferson, Free Agent, Hairston, Anderson
PF/C: Duncan, Splitter, Blair, McDyess, Bonner
I think they keep Gee on the roster but he mostly plays in Austin. Temple will also get sent to Austin for extra minutes when the other guards are all healthy. Not sure if they keep Jerrells in Austin as #15 or cut him to leave a spot open. Jerrells is a lot less likely to get picked up by another team than Gee.
If we get Raja Bell it’s pretty much curtains for Malik Hairston.
I think Utah was able to land Raja Bell.
If you liked it, then you shoulda put a fifth ring on it.

ATS said something recently that I’ve really been thinking about: the spurs started last season with 7 bigs, right now we only have 5. On that note I think we’ll sign another player from the following bigs: shaq, dampier, kurt thomas, or gist.
As for our sf position, a rotation of RJ, Bell, and Gee is plausable and decently solid… I think those are our moves for the rest of the summer

Agreed but how many bigs did we have left at the end of the season. We let Haislip and Ratliff go and Mahimi has found a new home.

i wouldnt be opposed to Thomas coming back. Him and Gist are the only 2 i like from that list.

When we had 7 bigs Pop was playing small ball a lot. If we’ll have 5 may be Pop will play 3 of them together. I think Shaq is the best player from your list. He could be useful in limited minutes against some match-ups I think (Bynum, D.Howard?).
"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
Last year we had three legit bigs plus Bonner, and Blair was a rookie with big holes in parts ofhis game.
This year we have four legit bigs plus Bonner.
End of the bench guys like Ian, Haislip and Ratliff don’t matter much. The main thing you want from them is effort and chemistry. Theo could still block shots but was not content with limited minutes. And minutes will be much harder to come by this year. A Shaq, Dampier, etc. type player will only reduce minutes for Splitter, Blair, etc. You’re not adding as much as diluting. Does that make us better?

BTW, we currently have eight guards on contract and zero small forwards.

Which is why if the Spurs sign a veteran wing player, we need a true SF (Jones), not another guard (Barnes). I’m not opposed to getting a 3/4 either, but it’s now imperative that we re-sign RJ. Who knew that some of us would be clamoring for this at the end of the season?
Yeah, the “bring back RJ” movement is irony at its best.

I think that Pop will start ‘his favorite player’ at SG. Hill’s earned that slot, and depending on the matchup, may be called upon to guard the opposing team’s starting PG.
Buried in my tongue-in-cheek FanPost about bringing in Iverson for the vet’s minimum was the idea that maybe Ginobili could be called on to be the starting SF, if RJ doesn’t re-sign. It’s not the best option — screws up the rotation and we’d need to find a proven scorer for the second unit and makes Manu play far too many minutes — but given Pop’s penchant for using the regular season to see what works, I wouldn’t be too surprised if we saw a starting lineup of Duncan/Splitter/Ginobili/Hill/Parker for a few games. How’s that for an international Fab 5. :)

Forgot to ask....
Does it bother anyone else here that Bonner will be making more per year and is getting a longer-term contract than Splitter?
otoh, an initial three-year contract makes sense both for Tiago and the Spurs. He doesn’t lock himself into a team (one that will change dramatically when Timmy retires in about two years) and the Spurs don’t lock themselves into a player who, though gifted and experienced, has yet to play a game in the NBA. But if all works as we all hope and expect, maybe a Splitter contract extension? He could conceivably keep the Spurs winning until Manu’s babies are ready to join the team…. but I get ahead of myself. :)

Splitter dodged rookie scale but still must pay his dues.
by doggydogworld on Jul 15, 2010 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions
there are other factors that play into the disparity between Bonner and Splitter’s contract. The NBA actually pays a portion of veteran’s salaries if they’re below a certain amount, this is done to encourage NBA teams to fill out their rosters with vets instead of cheaping out and hiring a bunch of unproven scrubs. So IF I understand the salary rules (which is a BIG IF), I think the NBA is probably paying about a mil/year of Bonner’s salary and that amount doesn’t count against our salary cap.
Also, the reason that Splitter is signed for 3 years, plain and simple, is that 3 years is the minimum amount of time that a player has to be under contract for the team holding his contract to have his Bird rights when the contract expires. So in other words, if the Spurs are over the salary cap (or the luxury tax for that matter) when Splitter’s contract expires, we will be able to re-sign him at any price we please while other teams would be limited to cap space or exceptions.

I think the league only pays for vets on short term contracts (1 year or less?) who make the vet min. Pretty sure they won’t pay any of Matt’s salary and the full amount counts toward our cap.

Bonner will be making more per year
I thought that was weird too. Probably an artifact of the way salary cap math works. We can pay Bonner that without a penalty, but need money from the MLE to sign another player so we cannot pay Splitter more.
Also, hopefully Splitter is good enough to earn a monster contract in three years so he does not want to be locked in for the MLE for too long either.

Leverage. Leverage. Leverage.
A player on the open market gets more than a player who is a restricted free agent and more than a player who can negotiate with only one team.
