Tiago Splitter is Officially a Spur  -  One GM calls Spurs deal for 7-footer Splitter, "The best contract of the summer."

Tiago follows PtR on Twitter

Yawn to Dallas for LLE

Spurs were interested in Josh Childress

Temple leaves first Summer League game vs Minn on crutches

EDIT: I know the article before the jump is kinda long (twss) but it's not often that we sign Tiago "The Golden God" Splitter. Sorry

SO the spurs are looking very good again. We can go after Ronnie brewer my number one choice or any of these guys Barnes,Bell,Butler, james jones. I think the spurs can get one of those guys out of all them. If they do that and resign Jefferson spurs could be in a title hunt again. Spurs offseason if that does happen Splitter,Anderson, and FA SF. Those 3 are ifs if they can be productive in the spurs system but I am confident they can. As for Jefferson he did suck but got better rebouding wise, and defensivley somewhat down the stretch im sure he would be better his 2nd year in the spurs system. Bonner did preform better in this years playoffs than he did in last years playoffs lets hope he improves enough to actually show up come the real season. Overall great offseasan as of now even better offseason if they resign RJ and get a SF in FA with the rest of the MLL

I’m loving our TEAM, Duncan, Splitter, Anderson, Manu, Parker, Hill, Blair, McDyess, Bonner, Gee, Hairston, Temple, BUT I want Anthony Randolph. If I’m GM, I find out how seriously the Knicks want Parker. Parker for Randolph and Douglas? Maybe Galinari and Randolph? We need youth at the SF spot. Pop can hound them all year about D.
Starting 5 : Splitter, Duncan, Randolph, Anderson, Hill – Manu, Blair, McDyess, Douglas off the bench. Youth and experience, scoring, defence, REBOUNDING.

by Joseph Parkes on Jul 12, 2010 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

anthony randolph is not a SF and will never be. He can dribble and shoot, but he cant defend SF’s or shoot well enough to play there.
Parker for Randolph? no fuckin way, you dont trade an all-star point guard for just a nice power forward.

"Rock and Roll angels bring that HardRock Hallelujah"

by Chilai on Jul 12, 2010 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

It wouldn’t just be Parker for Randolph. Douglas or Galinari too. Radolph can defend the three. I liken him to a very young Lamar Odom. He has molding potential too. I don’t think the Knicks would give up Galinari, but Douglas would be a great back up for Hill.
Plus I don’t think Parker resigns with the Spurs next year anyway. I like Hill’s attributes over Parkers and I’d rather have the players know their spots are secured than the rotation fiasco last year.

by Joseph Parkes on Jul 12, 2010 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Randolph is a PF. And a mediocre one at that, at least right now. He has a lot of potential though, and I think there might be some truth to the Odom comparisons but considering Timmy’s age I’d much rather have Parker than Randolph and Douglas. Gallinari and Randolph+a trade exception would be fantastic if the Spurs were sure Parker was leaving but I doubt the Knicks would give up that much if that was the case.

3 years at like 10-11M, is pretty solid pay check. You’d expect the Spurs will extend him through that if he’s anything like what he’s done in Europe right away.

3 years is relatively short and he can prove his value post duncan by that point when a lot of money is freed up…its a fair contract to play for a contender

I still can’t believe we got tiago for that price… He was cheap cheap cheap! We can sign two more players for around 2mil each, not including rj who we can sign with his bird rights.

Also, I’m ready to start a “sign Neal” campaign/website. If we can pick up the number one scorer in italy in adition to the number one center in europe, anderson, and give rj a paycut, I’ll give this offseason an A+

For all the crap we give RJ, he still did some good things. He just failed at bringing a championship. We all knew he was overpaid when he originally got this contract. With realistic expectations, he could flourish.

by grego21 on Jul 13, 2010 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I never cared about his contract, the spurs didn’t give it to him anyways. Even if I thought he was a crappy player, he would be stupid not to take a lot of money from a team if it was offered to him. I also didn’t have high expectations of him to begin with, because I never thought of him as a great player, maybe a border line good one though. However, even with my mediocre expectations last year, he totally disappointed. There would be games where he would put up 3 shot attempts, sometimes scoring 4 points in 30 something minutes. He would just disappear and didn’t have enough basketball IQ to help the team.

He did always say the right things though, and despite his obvious frustrations, he didn’t let it get to him, and I know he will continue to improve as he did a little throughout the year. Next year he should be better, and I’m expecting improvement. It’s just fun to continue to make fun of his expense.

I’d be happy to get Raja. I like both these guys a lot. Artest worked fine for the Lakers, and I think Barnes could be fine in SA, he is not as bad of a headcase as Artest. But if he doesn’t like SA, that’s up to him.

Barnes = Cheap shot artist who is overrated. And doesn’t seem to be well liked (since he moves around from team to team).

by grego21 on Jul 13, 2010 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

dont worry

raja bell has enough esp what were asking for, theres a reason why the lakers were so interested in him and not matt barnes, besides im sure matt barnes will be signed soon. raja is a team leader barnes is a headcase we need players that showup during the playoffs and we need to hit our three as well as defend great players raja bell is great at both of these and maybe hes lost his elite defender title but i think hes above average and way better than RJ &bogans even on a bad day so that being said for the amount we have left it only makes sense.

if you need more incentive this guy doesnt back down from anyone (ahh the lovely kobe fight haha) and while hes playing hes also showing our rookie anderson what pop wants and if anderson picks up bell’s work ethic on defense !whooo well thats why bell is worth it to me.the question is does bell still hate the spurs ??

I was fortunate enough to see Temple live his first game with us, the only Spurs game I made it to last year, towards the end of the season in Sacramento when Tony was injured.

Yeah it was just the Kings, but I remember being impressed with what I saw. He made shots, including the long 3, wasn’t afraid to drive to the basket for the easy 2 if given the chance, didn’t turn it over much if at all, and he seemed solid in his Spurs IQ.

Hill, Parker, Manu, Anderson, RJ (allegedly), Bonner, Splitter, Blair, Dice, Timmy. That’s 10 spots. Temple appears to be the front runner for the 11 spot. Gee and Hairston might get the 12 and 13 spot and the Spurs like to leave a spot open. Unless Gist gets the Haislip spot for would-be stretch 4 I don’t think he’ll make it unless a trade happens. Joel Anthoy or O’Bryant would be fine in a Rattlif role, I guess.

Yeah I know that there are 15 total spots. But I’m guessing the 14 spot goes to a big. So the only way Gist makes it is if the FO thiks he can play the stretch 4.

I think Pop will put Manu on the IL for some games. I’m nearly sure Duncan will be on there at least twice.

Heck, if Temple gets a spot, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Parker sit out games too (Temple/Manu/Hill handling responsibilities).

Due to the depth, I really can see Pop utilizing the IL to sit the core guys. Also Dice at times. Bonner helps with that during the regular season.

Hairston is the front runner for the 11 spot. He’s the one not playing in the summer and the one that would have played in last years playoffs if he were healthy. Temple and Gee can both be assigned to the DL still and I’ll be shocked if the Spurs let either slide out of the system even if they don’t make the rotation.

I think it would be interesting to sign Gist (still has to show more in SL) and Neal and just run a full 15. I really want to see our offense running through Blair at center and how Gist can play the 4 with him.

by BlaseE on Jul 13, 2010 8:50 AM CDT up reply actions

On his interview, I think Blair said he had been tasked to learn the 4 this summer. This could be his logical spot specially if paired with a shot blocking 5.

by TD21 on Jul 13, 2010 10:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, I’m talking about evaluating Gist. Blair can do whatever he wants in SL and he has a contract. To rephrase that though, I want to see them play together successfully.

by BlaseE on Jul 13, 2010 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Temple is the one who fits the Spurs needs with the most versatility. He’s already a better/more comfortable point guard. And he can stroke it from all around the arc. Hairston’s down to his last year or one more to prove what he has got. Malik needs to show he has got a consistent shot.

Temple actually produced more convincingly last season during regular minutes than Hairston.

by grego21 on Jul 13, 2010 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Looking at that summer league game Temple’s decision making is pedestrian. He needs to improve in that area.

by bj1der on Jul 14, 2010 7:17 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree. You get a lot of TOs in summer league because the other guy cuts the wrong way just as you pass it. But Temple’s turnovers were more of the “try to pass through three defenders” variety. He sees passing angles that just aren’t there. It’s really too bad about the ankle, he needs the reps at PG.

The good news is he seems to play up to the level of the other nine players. Some players dominate in college but disappear against NBA talent. Temple is the opposite.

Haislip, Ratliff and Ian were 3 of our lowest 4 players in total minutes played, all just ahead of Cedric Jackson who played 25 minutes. Those 3 bigs played a total of 392 minutes.

If need be, Bonner, our fifth big could start. I mean he has in the past and it is a possibility. Bonner had 1100 minutes last season. Blair was just under 1500 and Dice was just over 1600. Duncan was just under 2450.

So we lost 3 bigs and gained Splitter, but I think he will play more than 5.5% of our front court minutes. Blair could also see an increase. Without another big and barring injury, we could still see less small ball with just our 5 bigs.

I do think we should have a young prospect big, but don’t count on whoever that is from breaking the 200 minute mark and doing anything important.

by BlaseE on Jul 13, 2010 8:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s not a minutes thing, it’s an injury thing. You can’t go into a season with 5 bigs. There will be segments of the season where at least one is out with an injury.

by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jul 13, 2010 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Obviously RJ failed miserably at small ball 4 last season, but he has the body to do it. I wonder if that is something will work on with Pop this summer. RJ might be able to fill in more functional minutes at the 4 than someone (inexperienced) like Gist. Obviously this would be a poor long term solution, but for a week or two of games with only one big out to injury….

Another option because I want the Spurs to lean towards youth if they go big is to just bring over Ryan Richards now. He is a big they could assign to the D League, and he seems to have more potential to turn into a stretch 4 than Gist.

No, Splitter knows we pay once its earned. He hasn’t played in the NBA one minute. Yes the contract was a steal, but I’m thinking Splitter sacrificed dollars for contract term. I bet the Spurs offered a 5 year or 4 year for more money per year, but Splitter is confident his value will increase to the 7-8 per year range by the end of his contract.

Also like Miami, we can play the no state tax card, but we also have a cheap cost of living in SA. I remember Bill Simmons making a comment when Tony sold his bachelor pad like “I don’t know if its embarrassing that his house only cost 900K or if houses are just that cheap in SA.” He’d probably get a condo rental in Miami for double that.

He also seems humble to me. If he is what we think he is, he’ll get his money.

And other than adding Kidd several years back and Caron last year, what else have they done that’s newsworthy in the last decade (aside from letting Nash go in his prime)?

I often wonder if it’s all always just a big PR ruse by cuban to keep the ‘wrecks relevant and in the papers. I guess it’s either that, or simply that no one wants to ever play in dallas. We’ll see if Harrington breaks the mold though.

I don’t think he will, and I’m expecting just that very thing to happen. I think RJ is too stupid to realize what he has here, and he bolts.

Leaving us, of course, with a complete void in the “dumbass tattoos” position.

I think we should use what’s left of the MLE for a 6th big man that can bang with Gasol/Bynum. I still think that our line-up (even if we re-sign RJ) may not be enough to beat LA. I am not sure how Tiago can deal with Gasol or Bynum come the playoffs.

I see from the SI website that old Spurs: Kurt Thomas and Fab Oberto are available. We would be better off getting people who are used to the system so they can contribute immediately. Even in practice, this big man will help get Tiago up to speed with the system.

If we re-sign RJ, our wing need should be filled. We can platoon a 5 man rotation at the 2/3 spot, RJ, Manu, Anderson, Gee, Hairston and even Hill.

As excited I was in last year’s line-up, I think I am equally thrilled in this year’s roster. We lost steam to a spirited Suns but the Spurs should be hungrier and far better this year. I can’t wait to see how RJ, Blair and McDyess get back after a year in the system. I am sure these guys will perform better.

Still mad respect for the Spurs and their fans though. But sometimes you want your rival to fall flat on it’s face.

I seriously hope that Tiago knows how to MASSIVELY FLOP effectively. It is definitely an important skill at the NBA level.

Spain is in Europe, right? But no, Tiago is not European, he just plays there. And oh, . . . a Spanish dude is definitely European.

yeah....

I’m not a Spurs fan, so I really don’t care about where Tiago is from. I don’t belong to the Splitter Cult, so save your sarcasm.

I’m more interested in the years of obsession by Spurs fans.

Obsession is all we, Spurs fans, have nowadays and here in PtR, sarcasm is what we live for. It was just a slight jab, Tiago did play in the Spanish League.

He was born in Brazil before he played for Spain, so I bet he COULD give Manu a run for his money. That’s a big man taking those dives.

If it’s any consolation, I’ve also grown really tired of the massive overhype surrounding a foreigner who has yet to play a minute in the toughest system in the toughest league in the world.

Most would call that “old-man-cynicism-and-negativity,” but regardless… thanks.

And for you PtRers- I DO think Tiago will be a good and a valuable piece, I just hesitate on retiring his number just yet. We all thought the same about RJ and I’m leery of giving love before there’s proof that Drago’s not Rasho 2.0.

Touche, Man. Thanks for the clarification. All this time I’ve been operating under the assumption that Tiago is merely a COMBINATION OF DAVID ROBINSON’S HEIGHT, PAU GASOL’S NON-BLACKNESS AND LUIS SCOLA’S FOREIGNESS, but your spirited enthusiasm gives me a previously unrealized hope.

So, you’re not still mad at Argentina? Also, you forgot Varejao’s scrappiness.
