DTOUR: World Cup - The Final Game Thread
I know this is up a little late, but The World Cup Final is starting in a little bit. One of the "Best to never win the Cup" teams will lose that moniker today (personally, I'm pulling for the Traffic Cones). I've never gotten this into futbol before, so although I'm excited about the game, I'm a little sad The World Cup is almost over.
Jump on into the discussion.
Whether you want to discuss today's game, revisit Forlan's crossbar shot from yesterday, or talk about the tourney in general, this is the place for you.
And since this is a DTOUR, feel free to discuss the weather also. I'm sure Tim C. would love to hear how it's 85 degrees with a nice breeze in Denver.

Spain is really attacking, but the Traffic Cones defense is so far holding up. I must say that the Spaniards are Oscar-worthy in their flopping.

You know, sometimes colonizers and colonized, oppressor and oppressed, jailers and prisoners, kings and peasants develop that special bond in time. Look for LeBron and Cleveland for recent example. It is still kind of weird, but it happens. 300 years is certainly enough time to start thinking of these guys as some of your own. Are you at Philippines?

It looks increasingly likely that the outcome would be defined by the number of players on the field at the end of the game. The referee is the biggest star so far.

They seem to have pretty low expectations for their stars. Villa kicks an airball, and they praise him for shooting “in the right direction”. Precious.

Spanish team could use some lessons from Fisher. Their flopping doesn’t look very convincing. It’s funny how they try to get a penalty when they have legit opportunities to score. Just missed another one.

Germany were the most impressive, but they played like chumps against Spain.
I don’t know if I mentioned this, but they beat us 4-0.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
The game today was very close, and both teams lost a lot of opportunities. Spain scored at the end. Does it make them the better team or were they just lucky?
"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
From a time of possession and attacking standpoint, I would say that Spain was the better team. But boy was it ugly.
Better team = the one focused on passing the ball instead of hitting their opponents.
I smell death... everywhere.
I don’t know which one was trying to pass the ball. One team was trying to injure someone and get an advantage. Another was trying to get their opponents enough calls / yellow cards, so that they could play 11 against 9 or 10. The second strategy prevailed, so I guess they were the better team.
"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
That’s not true.
Kick to the chest = instant red card. I don’t know if you play football, Kondor, but the soles of those shoes can really injure a person.
Robben continuing the play after the whistle = instant yellow card. Not even debatable anywhere around the world.
That’s two red cards that had to be shown. There is no place for interpretation here, none at all. There was another should’ve-been red card in the first half. I really don’t see how you can blame Spain for the countless fouls they received. If you really think they were simply “flopping”, then you’re welcome to be swept off your feet while running at full speed in a football field.
I smell death... everywhere.
Latin, I do not say that the Dutch didn’t make fouls in that game, they did and they did a lot. That kick to the chest was brutal. The foul when the red card was actually shown – not so much. Robben continuing – I’d say it would be an overreaction to send him out for that, it was not a big deal really. They also have shown multiple times when the Spanish player would trip on his own foot and pretended to be murdered. One Spanish guy made a very rough play (yellow/red card worthy, probably) and then rolled on the grass in an evident pain until he realized that the danger was over. You see, they have technology to repeat those things multiple times in a slow motion, and you can really see those multiple flops. I remember one attack when 3 Spanish players flopped in a row, instead of trying to score. They just dived, one after another. It was a very physical game overall, but it was quite evident that the Spaniards just tried to get the Dutch in yellow cards/ejections/penalty kind of trouble, I think it was their strategy and it did work in the end. May be this is a smart strategy against a physical team, but I cannot say that I enjoyed it too much. I liked Germany-Urugway game much more than the Final.
"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
The red card that was shown was completely proper. You see, fouling a player when he has an opportunity to score a goal is an instant yellow card. No arguments there. He already had a yellow, so he was out.
Robben continuing the play is against the rules. It’s an instant yellow card in any league. Every player knows that. He did it because he was frustrated, but it was incredibly stupid of him. There can’t be an argument here.
I completely forgot about the penalty for Spain that the referee didn’t see. Putting your body in the way of the guy trying to score (as in, blocking his legs with yours so he can’t kick the ball) is a foul. It wasn’t an easy call, I’ll give him that much.
Slow motion sucks. Nothing seems a foul. I’m not saying the Spanish players didn’t exaggerate contact of flop, but the refereeing was clearly biased against them today.
You know who can cut down on flopping? A good referee. Simulations mean yellow cards, and if he’d kept the Dutch from trying to break the Spanniard’s legs, they wouldn’t have needed to act like that. You see, if you fall down and you don’t get a call, the next time you fall down and try to make him notice you did so. The referee ruined the game, and didn’t let Spain play football.
This was the game-halting equivalent of Crawford and Bavetta calling 50 fouls in the 4th quarter. Might not seem that way, but it was.
I smell death... everywhere.
Too many calls. Too many flops. Too much dirty play. This sums it up for me pretty much. Not a good football in general. OK, you rooted for Spain, and I wasn’t rooting for anybody. I don’t think there was a legit penalty there. There was a lot of contacts that could go either way. Of course, bad calls are very critical in a game like that. One questionable call can decide who are the world champions. That’s the saddest thing about football. I am glad that the ref didn’t call the penalty, it would be even worse if the result was determined by the questionable foul. At least now Spain can say that they scored a good goal to win this game.

"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
Nah, I am just extremely disappointed by how the Dutch played. Expected so much more from them. They played like Italy, and that’s a disgrace.
I smell death... everywhere.
Oh, I see why you don’t want to give them any credit now. Italy was a champion 4 years ago (and several times before), so may be the Dutch thought they would be champs if they played like Italy. In any case, they were one Robben good strike close to winning it. But you know what the octopus said. They were doomed and they knew it.
"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
Italy always played like that, though. I’ve come to expect them to be anti-football. The Dutch weren’t playing like this up to the final match. It was a gametime decision, because they thought Spain would otherwise overwhelm them. I just find it sad.
Regarding Italy, I’d like to point out they won in 1934 and 1938, one of them in Italy, with Mussollini. Fun times.
I smell death... everywhere.
Fun times.
I am not old enough to remember. But Argentina also won one at home under a military dictatorship, right?
“The 1978 World Cup’s River Plate Monumental Stadium is located one mile away from the infamous Naval Mechanics School concentration camp where prisoners in the Dirty War reportedly could hear the roars of the crowd during the World Cup match; prompting echoes of Hitler’s manipulation of sports during the 1936 Berlin Olympics.” – From Wikipedia

Yeah, we did. I’m sad that those genocides used football to gain support. I’ll always consider that WC tainted. In fact, for one of the games, against Peru, it’s often suspected that their goalkeeper and some of the players were bought.
It was a disgrace. Cruyff is my hero for refusing to play that year.

Just read that South Africa spent $6 BILLION on the stadiums. Wow – not sure if that will be money well spent from now on.
Yeah, it’s like the Olympics, the country that hosts it loses a bunch of money.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
But at least for Western countries, they already have some of the infrastructure and can use the facilities in the future. Will South Africa even get a sniff of that money back?
Stop tainting the celebrations with your talk about the rational use of money in underdeveloped countries.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
Both Olympics and World Cup gives a boost to the country’s infrastructure and technological development. Arguably, it is better spending of the money than many other alternative ways.
"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
Generally, I would agree. However, not all of the infrastructure that was to be built was finished and the odds of it being finished now is slim to none. Plus, will these stadiums be used enough in the future to warrant their construction? I hope so. And I hope that this World Cup has changed the world’s view of South Africa, but only time will tell.

Spain deserved this one. Somewhere in Holland all the great Dutch players of 1974 and 1978 are hiding in shame.

Those great Dutch players did exactly the same thing as this generation of great Dutch players: they lost in the Final. Except that they did it twice. I honestly didn’t like any of the teams today. It was just such an ugly game. The goalies deserve some credit though.
"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
They did it playing beautiful football, and they were absolutely robbed in 1974. Have you seen the Clockwork Orange play? There’s a reason they are remembered even though they didn’t win.
I smell death... everywhere.
I did watch those games, but my memory is getting weak, so I don’t quite remember how they played. I think, defensive-minded Germany and Argentina won both times. This time, both teams were quite strong on defense and missed multiple scoring opportunities. Robben missed the best opportunity of the match. The golden goal was actually quite good, but the game was ugly.
"We lost so many games that we shouldn't have lost," - Ginobili, May 2010
Well, in 1974 they lost with one of the worst refereeing ever. In 1978 they won a crazy match, but keep in mind that Johan Cruyff (and several other players) didn’t come to Argentina because of the dictadura. That’s kind of big.
It doesn’t matter how many times you reach the goal, or how defensive-minded you are. It’s about whether you want to play football, or make as many fouls as you can get away with to keep the other team from playing football. Holland invented Total Football. That should mean something.
I smell death... everywhere.
