So, guys. Is it just me, or did we just sit through one of the most unwatchable finals of all time?
The defense was good, not great, despite the mainstream media literally slobbering all over it. Neither team could defend without fouling whatsoever, but the refs alternated between calling it super-tight and calling it super-loose in such a way that made consistent defensive schemes impossible. Kobe played a pathetically bad last game, and an overratedly average series overall. Before his Malone-esque Game 7 massacre he was shooting 50%, jacking up horrible shots every game, and turning the ball over at an obscene rate. All this talk about him being "clearly the best player" in these finals was ridiculous. He may have been, but it wasn't "clear", and it certainly wasn't by a big margin -- nobody played particularly well (though Pau has been more consistent than Kobe) but there was nothing transcendent about his performance whatsoever.
The media during this series was abominable. From the opening tip, we were treated to roughly 20 stories a day about how Celtics v Lakers was God's gift to sports and how there was no way the games wouldn't be classics. Even when the games were bad (which was more often than not) the media reported on them as though they were wonderful. The hyperbole was sickening. Then, once we finally got to game 7 the media kicked all of that up about 20 notches. They declared this one of the top 5 finals games of all time -- literally days and hours before the teams stepped on the court -- and in glorifying it took every possible opportunity to denigrate every game 7 that came before it, with special emphasis on taking a dump on 2005.
Anyway. Maybe I'll feel better if I list off the likable players on both teams. This should be fun! Let's see. Finley, Ray Ray, uh... er... Ron Artest, in a sick and twisted way. Um... Pau is OK I guess. That's about it. Two legitimately likable/good players, one insane person, and a criminally underrated big man. Nice. This finals was completely devoid of anyone to root for if you didn't like either team -- a description that applies to virtually every non-Celts/Lakers fan I know. Didn't stop my utterly obnoxious Lakers-fan friends from pestering me about how poor people prefer the Lakers and thus everyone who doesn't like the Lakers hates the poor (I wish I was kidding), and how "anyone who doesn't appreciate how epic and fantastic these finals [were] is a terrible basketball fan who doesn't deserve to have a team in the finals anyway."
... alright long story short those finals were terrible. Let's fix that next year.
