DTOUR: World Cup Losers
So, it's on to Round 2 (which technically has already started since Uruguay and South Africa played yesterday). Yes, this is a basketball blog, but I'm embracing the world's favorite sport during this event. Plus, those crazy Argentines need a place to scream and vent, and I wanted to post a poll. I was going to make it about what crazy thing Maradona might do this World Cup, but there are way too many possibilities.
Plus, there's a Game 7 tonight in the NBA Finals, in case anyone cares. Is there any way for both the Lakers and Celtics to lose? Because that would be perfect.

2-1 Argentina at the half. I don’t know if the fans can absorb this immense amount of goals.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
i’m no expert, but argentina looked a bit shaky for a while there in the second half. if south korea had gotten that equaliser it could’ve been interesting…

not shaky as in looking like they’d lose, but not confident like they were in the first half…

I agree woth you and that’s why I kind of wanted South Korea to tie it. I wanted to see how well the team dealt with adversity. Not that I’m complaining about a 4-1 win.

hey do either you or hipuks know where to find the lineup of the argentine basketball team? they’re playing here in australia starting next week (heading to the game here in perth), and haven’t been able to find any details. i know no nba players are making…

Here you go. It appears only young, unknown players are going.

wow…not a single name that i recognise. australian team is fairly young as well, no one over the age of 27 and nine of them 23 or younger.
cheers for that :)

spain was by far the better team. Kudos to the Swiss goalie though. The swiss got EXTREMELY lucky on the goal but all that matters is the final score i guess ;)

I’m getting a little nervous. I actually think it could go either way tonight. Thank you for all the good wishes.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
Yea me too, for a couple reasons. Boston winning would give Spurs fans more belief that their team can still win even though they are “old”. And I feel really bad for Kendrick Perkins. If there was no other reason but his injury that would be enough for me.

I don’t care if Boston wins, as long as L.A. loses.

Too early in the WC for that. You don’t start to party until the semis.

Helloooooooo. Soccer neophyte here. I’m sure there were some Americans who got drunk because of our 1-1 tie with England on a soft goal. And I’m sure there were some English fans who got drunk.
And people say the Spurs play ugly basketball – this is almost unwatchable. Thank goodness this is the only game I’ve wasted my time watching. 57-53 at the end of the 3rd?
If it were the Spurs, it’d be the “Worst. Finals. Ever.”

Are you kidding? This is GREAT. Defense like this is what wins championships. If the Spurs played this kinda D it would be unbelievable.

I know he’s a Celtic but you don’t boo Bill Russel. Shame on you Laker fans

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who was ashamed of basketball when that happened. They always bitch about how the Celtics fans are less classy but I think they very definitively won the title as the most low-down classless fanbase in the NBA tonight.

Seriously?! They booed Bill Russell?

These are the same folks that booed their own team when they lost to the Spurs late in the season.

OK, Bill Russel is probably my favorite Celtic but having him at Staples to present the Finals MVP Trophy (named after him) to a Laker after they just beat the f’ing Celtics would be like having Shaq be master of ceremonies when they retire Duncan’s jersey. I dare say even the classy Spurs fans might boo a bit.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
you’re comparing booing shaq to booing bill russel?

OK, then Derek Fisher or Karl Malone then. I’m saying they don’t belong there.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
He was presenting an award that’s named after him. 90% of the people in that stadium weren’t old enough to read when Russell beat the Lakers. Been retired 40 years. First person on the court after the game to congratulate Kobe, if you were watching past the buzzer. Didn’t have to go up there, he could have left. But he manned up.
There is no way he could’ve handled that in a classier way. Conversely, there’s no way the fans at Staples could’ve handled that in a more classless way. Just because mommy and daddy told the Laker kids Russell was a mean man doesn’t excuse booing him. He’s the best center of all time, he never got (nor will ever get) nearly the recognition he deserves, and he deserves a hell of a lot more respect than that.
"Whereas I never went fly like some of the boys." -- Ice
Spare me the lecture. It is the Celtic fans that constantly remind Laker fans the he beat us like 8 years in a row back in the 60s. If you guys ever make it back there feel free to invite him to your ceremony.
I don’t hate the guy but he don’t belong making championship presentations to Lakers.
PS. He’s the best defensive center of all time.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
Yeah right. he presented the Larry O’Brien trophy? I didn’t know he had two names.
In Manu, we trust.

Spurs fans wouldn’t boo anyone. Steve Nash killed us but did we boo them or did we congratulate them? Either way, this is BIll Russel. There would be no NBA as it is today without him. They should be singing praises to him because their beloved Kobe would not be playing if it wasn’t for him. This is not just another Celtic.

OK, I will try in English. My point is don’t have old F’ing Celtic players making championship trophy presentations to Lakers in Staples Center. I don’t hate Bill Russel but he don’t belong there.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
Maybe they should have brought someone else to present the Bill Russel finals MVP trophy.

who will they pick to present it when he’s 6 feet under?
