DTOUR: Our Sports Cup Runneth Over

Get your mind out of the gutter, that's not what I meant.  There's some good sports action to check out today, but most of it's happening early in the day.

Zidane_medium

On the other hand, this is a DTOUR, so it might be a good time to talk about the fact that the city of Chandler, Arizona decided to rip up the street outside my apartment complex and even close it for long time periods during the day about one month after I moved in.  And now, despite my best efforts to keep it out, my apartment smells like asphalt.  So now, walking to work and home again isn't by choice(good thing I carry my papers!), and it's 110 degrees outside(that's 43.3 Celsius to you non-Americans out there).  So, that's how the offseason is going for me so far.  If anyone else wants to bitch complain about where they live, feel free to do so.

But, the show must go on.

Star-divide

ACB Finals: Game 2 - Caja Laboral vs. Regal Barcelona [Caja Laboral leads 1-0]

11:00am Spurs Time @ Barcelona

Watch it on ACB360

So, Tiago and friends got a huge upset win in Barcelona the other day.  Today, they look to put Barca on the ropes by taking a 2-0 lead back to their home arena in Vitoria.  By the way, I was wrong about Barca's aggregate record in the previous post - after the game 1 loss, they are 59-6(!) on the season.  If Caja wins the league title, that might just be one of the biggest upsets ever in the ACB.

World Cup:  Day 2 Schedule (All Games Spurs Time)

South Korea v. Greece - 6:30AM

ARGENTINA v. Nigeria - 9:00AM

England v. United States - 1:30PM

U-S-A!  U-S-A!  Yeah, we totally care about non-American football when it's the World Cup!  I know there's plenty of Argentines around here, too - although I doubt Hipuks will wake up at 7am to watch.

Leave your thoughts on the matches [and anything else that comes to your mind - it's a DTOUR, after all] in the comments section here at WeNeedTiago.com.

It’s actually a sports blog. There isn’t anything basketball related to talk about. The Finals you say? FAIL. And it’s not just soccer, it’s the World Cup. Just because Americans are not partial to it doesn’t mean it’s not a sport. It happens to be the most popular sport in the world so why not?

Well 1 quater is over and I liked what I saw from Tigo. he sets screens and pick and rolls very good. He got blocked about 2 times but still kept shotting the ball, you can tell he has confidence in his shot. He has 8 or 10 points now. Then he had a block and 2 or 3 rebounds. Soild game so far.

"I've got Tim (Duncan) and you don't. That's the difference." -Gregg Popovich

by bj1der on Jun 13, 2010 11:19 PM CDT up reply actions

The British actually invented the term:

The rules of association football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other versions of football played at the time. The word soccer is a colloquial abbreviation of association (from assoc.) and first appeared in the 1880s. The word is sometimes credited to Charles Wreford Brown, an Oxford student said to have been fond of shortened forms such as brekkers for breakfast and rugger for rugby football.

I was actually playing futbol before I ever touched a basketball. I actually enjoy playing (as long as the field is tiny otherwise my lack of physical stamina gets to me) but watching it is tedious. Too long and not enough events. It says a lot when all ESPN can find to report is one goal, yellow cards and at what time they happened.

The way it works now there is too much luck involved. Case in point Ghana vs. Serbia. The whole game was tied and it got decided by a hand in the area and a penalty. To better determine a winner they should probably play a best out of 11 series.

its interesting…i’m not a real follower of the sport, but in the run up to the world cup, people who are into it were mumbling about verbeek not being good enough for the coaching job etc. then in the last few days as everyone jumped on the bandwagon, most of these new fans were saying “we’ve got a shot”. and then…well……

sorta glad its on at such a bad time here, so i’ll miss most games. much like i missed the canadian GP last night…though i’ll download that.
