It was a good season. If you define success by improving on what you did last year, it was a success. Unfortunately, that’s not how success is measured in San Antonio.
Free Tiago Splitter!
It was a herky-jerky season between the injuries, incorporating the new guys and never achieving any consistency. Summing it up, in previous years I felt the Spurs could win a championship. This year it was more hoping they could. There were a lot of what ifs that factored into it.
Asked before the game how Parker has looked, Popovich said, "He’s still cute. "
Now I go into a 2 month rut where I avoid the NBA home page and anything NBA related
"We'll see how our character is," guard Tony Parker said. "We don't have time to be sad. Nobody cares. It's just us. We're the only ones who can help each other."

Yes I get tired of the “Spurs are done” articles that espn writers have written for the past 3 years.
The nba is becoming more athletic, and the spurs dont have many athletes. lets stop drafting european players huh
We drafted him didn’t we?
"I've got Tim (Duncan) and you don't. That's the difference." -Gregg Popovich
On that basis, the suns drafted Rajon Rondo
he went off for 29 points, 18 rebounds , and 13 assists today…..
Or, if we draft them, make sure they actually play for us

Say bye to Mason and Bonner, Jefferson if possible. Blair, Hill and Hairston have to continue to develop.

The Spurs weren’t very good this year, they merely rode Manus godliness into an excellent last 15 or so regular season games. We got work to do, but we also have some nice pieces like Hill and Blair.
Night all.

I hate to say this…but Parker is young and a incredible trade bait. Should we try getting a bigger shooting guard? or forward? I wouldn’t mind Bosh or Joe Johnson.
I know one Rocket fan who thinks that you could get Bosh for Splitter, Jefferson, and fillers perhaps.
That said, I think he’s a moron (he never stops whining about the Battier trade and thinks we need to rebuild) so take that as it is.

::sigh::
What a bizarre ride this was. There’s no other way I can describe it.
Of course, I’m sure PtR and 48MoH’s respective contributors will summarize the 2009-10 season far more eloquently than I can right now; I look forward to reading those posts in the coming days and weeks ahead.
With the Spurs now eliminated, my interest in the 2010 playoffs goes with them. I won’t be rooting for anyone, until the start of the 2010-11 season. Hey, that’s just how I am. ::shrug::
On a more personal note, I had great fun contributing to the PtR community, since the beginning of January. After lurking for so long, I was wary about how I could find my voice among all these dominant personalities and I was happy to learn that you guys made fairly easy; although, the learning curve was quite steep.
Anyway, see you all on draft-day, throughout the off-season and at Tiago’s press conference.

Couldn’t agree more.
I can’t wait until this Formula One technology car makes it to sport cars so that you have to take your left hand off the steering wheel of your 1 million dollar Bugatti to cover a hole, remembering to take your hand off as you approach the turn, lest you not have sufficient drag and crash straight into a wall.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
Ellie Kemper is uber cute.

There’s gonna be trouble, there’s no way the HRT’s ,Virgin’s (giggity) and Lotus cars can get out of the way fast enough. Where are they gonna go? There’s not enough space. Also the cars have a longer wheelbase this year.
Prepare to see a bunch of drivers bitching about traffic.

imagine if USF1 had made it to the grid…would’ve been 4 hopeless teams, 8 hopeless cars. time to re-introduce the 107% rule. or pre-qualifying.

Dragic and Barbosa were drafted specifically because the Suns told us to – the trades were already in place.
Free Tiago Splitter!
I went to the beach. The cottage was excellent, but the beach was horrible, and we paid a lot for the place. While there, someone told me that the Spurs lost game 3. I came home, but still missed game four due to this little thing called national elections.
So the Spurs lost. To the Suns, of all teams. The person I voted for will probably not win either. I wonder who he loses to…
Today—er, later today, after the initial count—is the definition of FML.

I know it’s late and everyone is tired, but just posted a new fanpost.
It’s not a recap of the series or a look at next season. Just some thoughts about the Spurs and Suns that I couldn’t get out of my head before I went to sleep.
Would appreciate any comments or thoughts from anyone who wants to read it.
really? on ptr? this is how the poll is going so far?

Idk…I just think it would kind of suck to be banned without warning. Just like that. Happened to me once. Then again I wanted that…..o.0

Jeez…. espn ALREADY has rumors of Tony on the block this summer. Not that it’s news or anything. Was that on their earlier?
Something to feel positive about. Parker was strong in his come back. Aside from Game 3, where that fall slowed his aggressiveness, he brought it. And he did it on the passing side too. Next season should be brighter and better for the Spurs. You know Hairston and Temple will likely be rotation players.
And Blair with more time could be scary, especially if they can improve like Hill did last summer. It’ll be good to see Hill work on other parts of his game. He needs to focus on being more selfish.
Hey Dirk, opt out and take a pay cut. Please?

they were on their 3rd string centre. their best player was running at about 10%.
yet they won 2 games, and we got swept.

That we went cold on offense at the wrong time. How many easy and open shots did we miss this series?

I would LOVE that. Maybe I’ll find an old comment I made about him. He’s someone I thought would never get to us.

Yeah he would be a nice fit, although I think we also need an athletic big who can block shots

its far from the end
i am surprised so many people are so down about the season. I will admit at the beginning of the year i thought we would be champs but after a while i was worrying if we would make the playoffs. I am happy that we gelled and beat Dallas in the first round because this team over achieved big time. i hope we don’t trade Tony and build on what we have. I can’t wait for the draft!
We Suns fans are spoiled...
…to have played against two franchises with loyal, respectful fanbases. As much as I’ve disliked the Spurs on the court, I have a great deal of respect for your organization. This year’s Suns’ team is what your team has been for the last decade, and guys like Tim and Manu have managed to stay humble after all the success they’ve enjoyed. It does feel great to get this monkey off the Valley’s back, though. I’ll root for these Spurs any day….as long as the Suns aren’t adversely affected by their success, of course. And I know most Suns fans feel the same way. Don’t let the occasional trolls ruin y’all’s perception of the fanbase as a whole. Good luck!
Now we’ll have to deal with Troll Nation for the next few weeks….

Unfortunately this series was an appropriate ending to this season. If this awful return to less than stellar basketball had to happen, better it happened now and not two weeks ago vs Dallas or next week vs the Lakers.
We went back to our season-long stumbling on defensive rotations; missed FTs; missed dunks; up and own RJ; struggling Manu; Blair as a rookie; disappointing 3pt shooting. That these all happened at once were too much to overcome, yet such a perfect sh*t storm from all the negatives of our season.
Next season will be better, primarily because of Blair, Hill, Temple and Hairston. Look at PHX; they didn’t make the playoffs last season but the improved play of their bench, guys who brought energy, athleticism and 3pt shooting, helped build the camaraderie and support some old players (Nash and Hill) and one selfish (Amare). Add a 3pt specialist to our group and their familiarity with the system plus experience of seeing these two playoff rounds will push this team back into the 54-56 win group, a high seed and chance to make another run at a championship.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Due to Mothers’ Day events I was unfortunately not able to be here either during the last game of the season, but at least they went down fighting and didn’t lay back and take it. To the Suns – congratulations – give the Lakers even more fits that we would have. The Suns have the spacing required to really bother the Lakers and the shooting to get it done…. Let Richardson go off for 30 + every game! To our Spurs, thank you for giving us your all and letting us be a part of yet another good season :)
I look forward to hanging around here and discussing how our Spurs will improve, the inevitable ‘Splitter’ talk, and everything else that makes this site so very cool to be a part of. Thanks for having me here!
"This team is like a bunch of cockroaches. They just don't die!" -Charles Barkley, after Game 7 vs. the NOOCH.
The "I'm gonna rip the eyes out of your head and piss into your dead skull! You f***ed with the wrong Marine!" face. Because Popovich can be kinda scary.
Who am I still rooting for? The Spurs, of course.
Oh, you mean who do I want to win this year’s Finals, of the teams that are left? Who cares… I just want to see some good basketball from here on out.
Because the Spurs didn’t play very good basketball this series, except during short stretches. In fact, do you know which team looked like the Spurs of old to me? Yeah, it was the Suns.
Not so much on defense, I’ll grant you. But the formula of two superstars plus a handful of ex-stars in role-playing gigs, drawing attention on offense, surrounded by spot-up three-point shooters, running the pick and roll down the defense’s throats, and slashers driving the paint to disrupt the defense… that looked familiar, didn’t it? Unfortunately, the Suns were the ones doing it.
In retrospect, we could have expected it… both Steve Kerr and Alvin Gentry spent some time in the Spurs organization, and they learned well.
As for those fans who predicted a Spurs’ sweep (the other way) or were talking trash to the Suns fans based on history or the Dallas series, tone it down next year, willya? The ball doesn’t know from history, the only thing that matters is what the team does RIGHT NOW.
And we have to admit, the Suns were the better team (emphasis on team) this series. In fact, I’ll go further and say that there were several times where their second unit not only outplayed our bench, but they outplayed our starters (closed the gap from a deficit or even extended their lead). True, their bench was fresh and our starters were tired, but the fact that Pop couldn’t put in our second unit (or didn’t have confidence in them to match up to the Suns’ bench) is telling.
And worse, they beat us in different ways. Nash beat us. Dudley beat us. Dragic beat us, fer Christ’s sake! (I wish Blair could take back what he said about the trade that sent them Dragic and got the Spurs the draft pick that got us Blair.) I don’t think Amare scored over 25 points in a game, until the last one, when he beat us.
I posted before Game 1 that it was the Suns we didn’t know from past series — Hill, Richardson, Frye, Dudley, Dragic, etc. — that concerned me. That the Suns would be able to be effective in their half-court offense without depending solely on Amare was the scenario I feared, and unfortunately my nightmares came true.
Going forward, I’m hopeful but not sanguine about 2011. There are so many pieces we need to get back to championship form. An interior shot-blocker to help Timmy. A one-on-one defensive stopper. Spot-up three-point shooters with confidence and accuracy.
There are bright spots. Timmy, Dice, and Manu seemed to have found new life in the second half and the playoffs. Parker showed he can be effective off the bench, if needed. RJ played with a lot more confidence as the season wore on, and played D even when his shots weren’t falling. Hill and Blair — impressive progress thus far, and they will certainly improve further.
But I’m sad, because this series has forced me to admit that the end of an era is a lot closer than I had thought.
Manu, basketball genius that he is, ...
Shawn Marion (at his peak) vs. Grant Hill – tie
Eddie House vs. Dragic – tie
Barbosa almost 6th man of the year vs. Barbosa limited time off the bench – older was better
Raja Bell vs. Dudley – tie/older was better
Gentry vs. Dantoni – newer is better
Young Steve Nash vs. Older Steve Nash – tie
Immature Amare vs. Better Amare – newer is better
They did improve, but not by much. Those previous postseason matches were close, and they could’ve won with a bit of luck. They improved a bit, but most of it I think was our inconsistent season and we definitely dropped off from a few years ago (especially our bench, and our 3 stars’ consistency).
I was too lazy to look at the old rosters, so I’m not too sure if all these “old” names were in the same Suns team. But my opinion is they didn’t improve all that much (because they were already good to begin with), and we declined – hence the blowout.
no, they didnt improive much talent-wise – and i would argue that we didnt decline that much either.
to me, its more about where they improved. defense, rebounding, players that were willing to do the “dirty” work. dudley, amundson, lopez (over the course of the season), dragic vs. old barbosa, diaw and bell.
alvin gentry paid way more attention to the detals of a complete basketball game as well. mike D only cared about running and shooting. why else would he have gotten run out so quickly upon the regime change? this new spurs-ed-up version of the suns was not that much better “on paper,” but they were much tougher to deal with in terms of answering our runs, getting key stops and scrapping out loose balls.
in the end, i think your point also describes the paper-thin margin between champions and those that didnt make it. it also shows how terribly difficult it is to stay on top of the mountain.
Because the Spurs didn’t play very good basketball this series, except during short stretches. In fact, do you know which team looked like the Spurs of old to me? Yeah, it was the Suns.
If I had a dollar for each time during the series I thought about this, I’d buy Google.
Asked before the game how Parker has looked, Popovich said, "He’s still cute. "
Good point about details, the small non-highlight stuff that wins that extra game that gets you a higher seed, then wins the extra game that turns around a series. Gentry also rid that team of the emotional excuses of D’Antonio, where they were always looking for someone to blame instead of an opportunity to succeed.
Our Spurs teams of ‘05, ’07 and ’08 would’ve beaten this Suns team but the ‘08 squad would’ve needed more than the five games it took then.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
??? vs. JRich – newer is better
Diaw vs. Frye – newer is better
Diaw was a better passer but Frye fits their system better and, to my shock, plays better defense.
by doggydogworld on May 10, 2010 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions
Overall maybe, but not based on playoffs vs. the Spurs.
Besides, Joe Johnson didn’t play with Raja Bell. Or the “6th man of the year” version of Barbosa, for that matter. I don’t doubt a historical compendium of the best Suns players ever would be better than the current team.

I went with the Magic, because I can’t root for either the Lakers or the Suns…much less wish them any level of success, I am pissed at the Celts for signing ‘Sheed (because I’d rather he not be in the NBA at all any more) and for beating the HEAT and ruining my 1st round selections, and as much I a know that LeBron will win a title someday, the long that gets put off the better (I’m counting the Jazz and Hawks out already by the by)
While complacency costs, perseverance pays
