The Spurs, so good, but have slipped from greatness. So what exactly can bring them back? What's that one thing we can do? Well other than not resigning Mason.
The difference between playoff contenders and title contenders could just be as simple as 7 feet. As in the height of a big man we need. We just need someone to stand up to the Bynum's, Garnett's, Bogut's, Yao's, etc of the league and play them tough in the paint.
As it stands we have Duncan to play those guys and to a lesser extent Dyess. Duncan isn't the same Duncan who could stand up and outpower those big 7 foot guys. We don't even need Mr. 7 foot to play good offense. We just need the defense. If he just gives 6 or 8 points then that is some sweet icing on the cake.
This 7 footer also needs to be there to help block the runners who drive in the paint on us. This has been a problem for a while now and it just won't go away. This would also allow guys like Bonner and Blair to not feel so much pressure towards being that one guy to defend in the paint. This lets Blair play his versatile help defense and Bonner to play his man without fear of a runner scoring behind him.
This 7 foot defender would not have to be a starter necessarily unless Pop wants him to. I'd actually prefer him on the second unit to give Blair some cushion. Our second unit is more offense-oriented, so it would be nice to have somebody to defend whoever slips past those guys, notably Hairston until he develops more.
I don't know much about the draft or free agency next year, but I doubt it is too difficult to find a 7 foot defender with a little offense out there. If anyone knows any potential 7 footers who meet the description above, please inform me of them because I want a big strong defender on this Spurs team so bad.
I want to live the days of Rasho and Mohammed again.
