George Hill Albatross lost at sea |
Point Guard What in the world has happened to Cubits? In the past two games he's MINUS by double digits in the +/- stat. I hope I'm wrong by putting him as a starter for game 3. I hope the Spurs coaching staff see this. The game plan is to usually stop Nash. By doing this, it creates a domino effect to the rest of their team. This hasn't been happening in this series. Nash has been doing whatever he pleases and it frightens me. Now, if Pop starts TP, the white box goes immediately over to the left. Advantage: Suns |

Shooting Guard He's due. Richardson had a quiet(er) game in game 2. He might try to bring it more, since the Advantage: Spurs |

Richard Jefferson Raged against the machine |
Small Forward RJ brought the rage to game 2, but it wasn't enough to get us a win. Not his fault though, he really played well. Grant Hill reminds me of an old grandpa who wakes up yelling and throwing things. He has those kinds of spurts. He also plays like an old man compared to RJ. Advantage: Spurs |
Grant Hill Wayy over the hill |

Tim Duncan Wants to win |
Power Forward The Suns are making Timmeh work for his shots, but he has been shooting it pretty well. I'd expect the same in game 3. Apostrophe hasn't hurt us as much as he used to, nor in the same way he used to. Now he's getting to the line and making me throw things at the TV. Advantage: Tied |

Center Dice continues to bring it to the playoffs. Let's hope he continues and his efforts don't go unrewarded. Does Collins have a pulse? I could have sworn I've seen Nash pushing him up the court in a wheelchair. Advantage: Spurs |

I really love you, Gregg, but you've got to wake up and smell the losses. Tony must dominate Fisher and help us get the mother flipping win. Oh, and stop the three point shots, for crying out loud. Seriously don’t know where you guys read or heard those stories. Stew played professional basketball oversees before switching careers. Anyway in a regular season game he tried to draw a charge and a skinny kid, Emanuel something, dunked on him and tore the rim off. A screw flew out of the back-board and stuck Stew in the eye. Apparently the play before Stewart was trying to get in the kids head and gave him a high elbow.
“I tried to rattle him” Stewart explained, “Most of these Euro’s out here don’t like to be touched, so after a few shots I gave him (Emanuel) a little nudge just to let him know it wasn’t going to be a cake walk. I don’t really remember what happened next. My teammates said he went Hulk on me…whatever that means.”

Why the Spurs won’t beat the Suns in this series:
Someone said that Transition D is the key to this series, they were not totally wrong.
Rebounding is the key to this series. When we miss a shot we have to get the rebound or it leads to a fast break – thus needing transition defense.
If you noticed last game we were playing transition defense. So much so that it cost us any hope of getting offensive rebounds. The player would shoot and everyone would run down the court before the ball even went in (or out) of the cylinder. Yeah we were ready for the transition but the Suns still made more of their shots. The Suns were also good at grabbing offensive rebounds on their side. The point, rebounding and making shots. The simple basics of basketball. The result, Suns win the series b/c they are a better shooting team than us and they appear to rebound better as well. The Suns had 18! offensive rebounds last game vs the Spurs 7. Unless the Spurs figure out a way to grab more rebounds from the Sun both offensive and defensive this series is doomed.
and yes, it is an inside joke. just like the name Ceek, what kind of name is that? is that an inside joke as well?

Rebounding is always a key, but even if the Spurs rebound well they have to get back on transition D. There isn’t one key in a series outside of scoring more than they do every game. Rebounding is huge, defense is huge, making open shots is huge, hitting 3-pointers is huge. It’s all important.
if they rebound well they don’t have to get back in transition D – that is the point

So, you think that offensive rebounding is more important that getting back on D? The bottom line is the Spurs will miss shots and the Suns will get most of the rebounds off of those shots…it’s just the way it works. The Spurs MUST get back on defense after a rebound or turnover. It’s easy to say that rebounding will make transition D obsolete, but that’s not the way it works in reality.
It won’t make it obsolete, but you can’t just be one & done when we’re down at our end of the court…unless we make ALL of our shots.
by titansfan4ever on May 7, 2010 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Our offensive rebounding (if that’s what your talking about) will have little effect on their transition game. The Spurs have never been a great offensive rebounding team and they aren’t about to start trying. The bottom line is a Blair, Bonner or McDyess needs to stay in to rebound, as usual and everybody else needs to get back on D.
wait are you arguing for or against rebounding being the key stat to the game?
I am arguing that rebounding is the key stat to the game and that if you take care of rebounding then you don’t have to worry about transition d – read my reply below in seeing the difference between weak transition d vs strong transition d in this series
"Mr. Gilmore deserves to be in the Basketball Hall of Fame damnit. Highest field goal percentage EVER"
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gilmoar01.html
You are mistaken. Even a great offensive rebounding team won’t consistently get more than 1/3rd of their misses. Being out of position to stop the break the other 2/3rds of the time is a recipe for disaster against a team like Phoenix.
by doggydogworld on May 7, 2010 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions
if you had read my post – i said rebounding is the key – both offensive and defensive.
Suns must be amazing because they had a 37% offensive rebounding rate last game
we had an 18% offensive rebounding rate. That is the most glaring stat in the game (though you could argue FTs as well).
So a summation, the offensive rebounding difference between the teams was the largest difference between the two teams last game. We played little to no transition d in game one and lost by 9. We played a lot of transition D in game two and lost by 8. Explain to me again how transition d is the key to this series?

I didn’t respond to your original post, I responded to your erroneous statement that “if they rebound well they don’t have to get back in transition D”.
The Spurs problem in game 2 was weak defensive rebounding, especially at the start of the 2nd quarter. You don’t fix a problem at the defensive end by crashing the offensive glass. You fix the problem by blocking out better.

I agree that rebouding is key and, along with transition defense, was my key to our winning this series. It is inexcusable that we were out rebounded in game 2. I understand why we don’t have tons of offensive boards due to the need to get back (and we shot 50% so there weren’t a bunch to get) but our rebounding on the other end was about hustle not talent. That we brought so little in a series we trailed makes me angry.
I think last game reset the series. We can and will defend these guys. We still have a number of match-ups that we can expolit on offense every possession. We’re home, we’ll clean up the garbage and get this series back to even. I think we’ve all seen enough playoff series to know how little needs to change for series to become very tight. Every game is a two game swing and tonight it is time to swing it back in our favor.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Please guard Frye, he’s killing us from downtown, thats the key
Take Bonner away from the rotation, every time he’s in the Suns go in a run.

TAHNK YOU on the Bonner comment. Yes we need to completely remove bonner from the line up. He has been nothing but a hindrance in these playoffs. I hope next year Bonner and Mace get traded. Mace is another failure.

although I hope for a different outcome, I don’t think Frye guy will be near as effective this game as he was last, he’s alot better inside friendly confines.
47% at home
40% on the road
Still not bad…but yeah, Frye won’t have a big game every night but the Suns also won’t shoot that poorly to start either.
Tie game shooting 34% in the first half? This is not the same Suns team of two years ago.

+1 finally someone who can read the numbers around here. Bonner didn’t help us much, but also didn’t hurt us much in those two games. George Hill hurt us with his -34 combined in two games.
I am here to state the obvious.
Consider competition; in fact consider all other 9 guys on the floor contributing to that number. George’s +/- is so bad because nearly every starter and 4th-quarter type lineup that the Spurs use is getting destroyed by Phoenix starters.
Nash Stoudemire and Richardson almost always play at the same time. The only lineup they’ve faced that actually works for the Spurs’ favor is Duncan-Dice-RJ-Tony-Manu. It’s a juggling act to try and get that lineup on the floor because the Suns have a deeper bench and can play and run-and-gun for longer stretches without getting tired. They have an advantage in this department nearly to a man; Dice Duncan Manu and Bonner are all guys who would get gassed earlier than the competition if they were called on to play longer.
It’s a puzzle Pop is going to have to put together and I’m rather relieved that we have the coach we do in times like these
Oh, I think Bonner hurt us plenty. It’s just not correct to say Phoenix went on a run every time he went in.

They wouldn’t assign a ref (Salvatore) to two of the first three games in a series. Salvatore does go where the home team needs help so I think we all know the league wants Boston to extend Cleveland the full seven, which I too hope for.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
What are you talking about?
We’ll be lucky to win this series, much less win in Boston. Look at how horribly we’ve played at home!
Stop the panick attack. You’re tied after two games. This is not unique to playoff basketball. Cavs are still better. If you can’t win one game in Boston you don’t deserve to be around next round.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
i’m kind of glad the cavs have to go through an actual playoff team, I like watching great players in tough games, i’m not emotionally vested in either of those teams, but I think this series is gonna make a big statement about who lebron james is, win or lose.
Wait, ‘07 wasn’t a big enough statement?
j/k, I actually like LeBron’s game, just not the constant media attention.

I don’t really care for Lebron, but I have to admit, I don’t think this series is going to define him. The guy has been the main reason Cleveland has overachieved every season since they scored him with the number one pick.
Lebron has never had a legitimate number two option, the way Shaq had Kobe, Kobe has Gasol, Duncan has Ginobili, etc.
(And no, Mo Williams hardly qualifies, neither does Shaq or Antawn Jamison)
The Spurs = Not your granddaddies 7th seed !
I don’t think Steve Nash is ready to trade his second option for Mo Williams anytime soon.
The Spurs = Not your granddaddies 7th seed !
richardson? If you offered the suns mo williams for richardson straight up i think they’d be hard pressed to not take that trade.
Actually, I think the entire world would define “second option” as the second best player. Maybe it’s just me.
The Spurs = Not your granddaddies 7th seed !
you said nash’s second option, I would say his first option would always be amare’ stoudemire, and 2nd would be j-rich, in any case I see what you meant. As far as straight up playing ability goes it’s stoudemire, but if you threw in the politics of his contract, I bet mo williams for stoudemire would get more consideration than you might think.
Don’t start Tony. The rotation is fine as is. Recall, our defense got us the early lead (9 points at the end of the 1st) last game. George was a part of that. He was a bit too amped up and messed up an easy 2 on1 break but he is not a problem and is likely to go for 20+ tonight.
Dyce needs more minutes. Blair too (and bring the pain on rebounding big boy! You got six fouls so play with no fear as the PHX backups did). Bogans is still a good assest in this series and should have a chip on his shoulder after his mental mistakes last game. Other than that, play like we’ve been playing. We get plenty of open shots. Our defense was sound. Rebounding is the area in need of improvement and that’s about effort. Now is the time for the bench to bring some physical energy and points, our crowd to bring the venom, and our stars to keep bringing the pain. One win at a time. Make it 1-2.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
More Blair means less Timmy. Might be a good thing, considering he was out of gas late in the 4th. But Blair (and other 2nd teamers) must block out. None of this 8 offensive boards in less than 3 minutes crap.
by doggydogworld on May 7, 2010 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Why not play Blair and Timmy together for a few minutes? Post up Blair and allow TD to be like the jumpshooting Dyce. Or, post TD and if Blair’s man doubles he gets a layup, since TD is a great passing big man. It may only work that easy once or twice but it gives us two rebounding bigs and some post muscle. Make Nash and Grant run around screens set by the big fellas.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Or have Timmy stretch the floor by camping out at the three point line :)
If Timmy posts up there’s no place for DeJuan. He doesn’t have the McDyess 18 foot jumper and he hasn’t been around long enough to learn Oberto’s high-low game. His man will simply sag off him and clog the lane. That’s a killer.
So why don’t the coaches just let Timmy be the jump shooter for a few minutes? I guess they think it’s a waste of his energy. If he’s not going to be where he’s most effective he should be on the bench, resting. They have their reasons, probably good ones. I think DeJuan will eventually be good in the high-low game and I expect to see it next year.
by doggydogworld on May 7, 2010 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions
They moved TD around last game, including some jump shots. It wouldn’t be the first time teams have two bigs where the lane gets clogged. Blair has a decent short range jumper, and if TD misses there’s Blair not being boxed out to rebound. I’d still give a try for a few minutes. PHX does not post defenders that can guard our bigs without help.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I think Ginobili needs to have a big game. If for nothing else then his confidence.
I don’t think Starting Tony is such a bad idea, particularly if we want to put the Suns in a hole early. Except maybe this time we can hang on for a victory.
A home cooked meal and the crowd will take care of the rest.

No disrespect, but JRich is not in the same category as Manu. The receive different levels of attention from the defense and one carries a much larger responsibility that he can do without the help of others. I’m just guessing, but I assume One4 meant that the Suns have to be feeling pretty good about being in the driver’s seat right now. They don’t have Game 7 pressure tonight. The Spurs do, yes, because we know we’re not coming back from 0-3.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
Suns have learned their lesson from the last 4 times. Especially Nash, why do u think he played out of his mind in game 1. I expect Suns will be playing tonight if they are down 3-0, they saw last game how Spurs can jump started the game.
Oh sure, they’ll be playing to win. But I tend to agree with One4 that there’s a distinction to be made between motivation and stress. The Suns are motivated to keep winning, but they don’t face the stress of almost insurmountable circumstances if they lose. Will they be saying “We have to win this game” in the locker room? Of course. But I’d rather be playing for the kill than playing to stay alive, and that’s what they’ll be doing. The Spurs, on the other hand, will be playing to stay alive.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
How do you think Robin Lopez will affect the game if he plays tonight? I imagine Collision will not see as much time.
