Game 2: Spurs @ Suns - Second Half "Step It Up" Thread
Well, this game is essentially back to zero. We can still play better than this. We know Manu is so much better than that first half.
Let's go, Spurs and PtR nation.

Nash is fine.
I seriously dislike Stoudamire (why so many Houston fans want this guy is beyond me), I’m not a huge fan of run and gun, and I’m STILL pissed off with our last games, when their announcers wouldn’t shut the fuck up about how Houston was some crappy team while worshipping Stat throughout.

Repost:
So let me get this right: GH messed up a 2 on 1 so we lost 2 points. Crawford cost us FTs and a 3 on the other end with his no call on an Amare foul. Bonner has missed 2 wide open 3s (gotta make one Red Rockets). And Bogans cost us four points and two fouls by not boxing out Dudley? We’re out-executing them but our own sloppiness is costing us 9+ points?
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
This is actually worse than if the Suns had played well in the first half and it was tied. Instead, we give up 10 and let a team shooting 16% less than us back in the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if Spurs were torched in the 2nd.
We didn’t exactly play great. You did notice all the missed open shots, yes? What they’ve got we’ve given to them. Time to outwork these guys in the 2nd half.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Suns just really wanted it more that half, and it shows in the offensive boards. Kudos to them.

fuck dudley. he is not a good player. the only reason he got those points and rebounds was because of our own sloppiness and richard jeffersons ability to keep an eye on dudley.
Reminds me of Bonner, except I bet the turtle rebounds better.

I actually want Blair to get some decent minutes this half. His rebounding and energy wre mellow that half. I’m sure communicated pealed paint off the wall about the lack of effort and energy from our bench in the locker room. I want to see D-Bear control the boards.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
yes that would be good, however please please please dont let us see bonner and blair in at the same time. the stats show that that is a horrible lineup for us.
So if in Game 1 we couldn’t keep them out of the paint, now we can’t keep them from hitting 3s. The good news is that there are only so many ways to score, so we have to figure them out eventually, right..?

Our defense was fine. We just didn’t finish off the possessions with defensive rebounds. They are in the game because they got so many extra possessions.

This one’s going to be tough, the bench shot the team in the foot after the starters played Spurs ball. The only hope now is that we got something that will not be mentioned out of the way. The team can’t afford another one.
Weirdest thing guys, I was just reading through SB 1070, the AZ “we hate illegals” law, and Matt Bonner’s name is listed as the author.

Our rebounding is killing us. It’s ashamed with our excellent offense and defensive game that we’re only up by so little. We really are much better than the Phoenix Suns, just a bit more focus on rebounds and they aren’t going to stick around much.

What do you give us on this thread besides hating on our own players?
I am here to state the obvious.
What are our other options? It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize an NBA player or the decisions of a 4-time NBA Champion head coach who’s in the top 5 of wins all-time. No one’s saying Bonner is the second coming of Bill Russell, just that he’s not single-handedly destroying us or that we have any better options.
Yes, it would be nice if he started hitting his outside shots. But you don’t “throw the baby out with the bathwater.”

Well, I meant that Fred was right when he said Bonner didn’t contribute enough to play when he couldn’t score. And the people that warned me that he had a history of losing his shot in the playoffs.
I smell death... everywhere.
And that’s all true. But should we then simply run 4 on 5? HE’S WHAT WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. Yeah, he sucks and blahblahblah. Easy to say, but present a solution that doesn’t involve a geriatric having to play 48 minutes (Dice), a rookie who’s foul trouble limit him to 15 minutes a game (Blair), or a man with styrofoam ankles (Ian).
Theo Ratliff is not walking through that door.

Why can’t we go small ball when Dyess in on the bench? It’s not like the Suns are that tall. It’s not like they don’t kill us on the boards when Bonner and Blair are both in.
I smell death... everywhere.
Usually, small ball is griped about by everyone on PtR. Now, it’s a viable option. Who plays in Matty’s role in that scenerio?

not apparently. haven’t you watched the suns at all this year? they’ve been like that all year. and it’s not because lebron gets them wide open like the cavs (though nash obviously helps matters) — they’re just all very good three pt shooters. it’s hard to guard the suns because their offense is completely fantastic. we need to get our defense back on track. we had some great rotations but also a lot of comically bad ones…

What is saddening is the fact that the Suns aren’t nearly as devastating or threatening as they once were 3-4 years ago, and now we SHOULD be the biggest threat to the Lakers. I just don’t see it, too many stupid mistakes, and the defense is just downright horrendous.
We are getting used and abused. This is exactly why I didn’t want to play this team. Fuck, this is going to be a long brutal series. We gotta win 4 out of the next 5.

There is a good chance they can win game 3 and 4 in san antonio. That would put the spurs in postion in to take game 5 on the road. Which I belevie we have a good chance of doing because its not like we ever were blown out in game 1 and 2 and we were always in the game. Its going to be tough but im calling it spurs win the next 4 and close it out in game 6.

Well, welcome to reality guys. Although it’s technically not over, frankly speaking the Spurs are going to have trouble from here on out. Really, this boils down to two things
1)The Spurs aren’t good enough defensively to hold this team down consistently. The Dallas game fooled us in many respects and now we’re starting to see the team D we saw through the regular season, unfortunately.
2)In order to win we’ll have to match them offensively, but we can’t because our 3 point and free throw shooting is atrocious. By the 4th they simply crowded the paint, because they knew we have no threat there. And even though their bad defense fouled us regularly, trading 1-2(or 3) every possession is a clear winning strategy for them.
Um, no. Playoff series are seven games. There hasn’t even been a game in SA yet.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
by SpurredOn on May 5, 2010 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I know it’s not over, but unless the Spurs either learn to play consistent D, or start hitting more from 3, the series is over. Boxing out would be a nice help also.
Really, the game can be summed up by two players: Bonner and Frye. They’re the exact same no-rebounding, bad defense, goofy guy who stay in the league by hitting threes. Their guy though hits 5 of them and ours throws up bricks.
It’s not so much defense as it is execution on offense. We screwed up early by missing so many easy scoring opportunity. This game we brought it back to our pace. This will continue next game.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
by SpurredOn on May 5, 2010 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I disagree about the defense though. It was excellent in the 1st, but how many stops did we get in the 4th? I lost count of how many times we left Richardson and Frye open for 3 in order to “help” inside unnecessarily. About the only Spur who didn’t do this once or twice in this game was Manu.
Not to mention they have the go-to play with the Nash-Stoudamire basic pick and roll. They went to that play successfully every time they need to halt a run. The Spurs haven’t been able to stop that play all season, against anyone. They need to stop trapping Nash there, because it just gives AS a clear lane.
Although I agree with you about them crowding the paint (though they actually started doing it in the 2nd quarter), I think this isn’t that close to over yet. We have to protect home, and then this series swings.

Go win a championship before you come and insult the spurs. Your style of play will never win you a championship. All you guys have done is hold home court.

In an imperfect world, where the Suns win, I would root for them to take it all. They aren’t a bunch of jackasses. Maybe one dumbass.
Manu is still our savior. Tim is our foundation, Tony is our french guy, Georgie is our cubits, Pop is our coach. we’ll still win this.
If you liked it then you should have put a 5th ring on it. Oh oh oh.
have we ever won a game reffed by Joey Crawford? I mean the guy is clearly hellbent on making us lose. same story every time. whatever bs call it takes, Joey would make it.

what’s the story behind this? was he passed up by the spurs during draft 30 years ago?

I don’t know if it started earlier, but that was the most ridiculous call in the NBA history. JC was banned for the playoffs, and we got the trophy that year, I think.

Funny how if you did a study of “the most ridiculous calls in NBA history,” I’d bet that Crawford was involved in the majority of them by far.
And Stern/Jackson doesn’t think that’s interesting.

As much as it pains me to admit it, you have to give credit to the Suns. They wanted this game more than we did. Their bench was huge, Dudley and Frye in particular. The series is far from over, but the Spurs need to bring their “A+” game in San Antonio.
These aren’t the Phoenix Suns of past years, they are deeper and have a better bench and shooters.
Pop needs to realize that he CAN’T play Bonner at all. Or Bonner and Blair at the same time at least.
I'm not saying something is wrong, but something isn't right.
These aren’t the Phoenix Suns of past years
That’s nearly true. But it’s also very true that the SPURS of old actually had a high basketball IQ and played with poise. Those things come back, and this series swings dramatically. Regardless of how “new and improved” the kleenex suns are.

It’s pretty humbling when you realize you’re just the dirty work player. I realized it recently when I couldn’t hit a damn shot in a pickup game. Man I suck…but not at dirty work!
Sometimes “dirty work” is all you get in pick up games. When I play most guys just wanna jack up 3’s and if I want the ball I have to pick up the garbage. And I’m usually a good shooter.
Well, I’ll see you guys on Friday
We’re going to learn a lot about what our teams are this weekend. Either you curl up into a ball, defeated, or you come out swinging.

The NBA: Where Joey Crawford happens.
If you liked it then you should have put a 5th ring on it. Oh oh oh.
Crawford seems to think NBA fans tune into the game to watch him. I think Stern should realize a lot of these refs are ruining the game. Just call the game, we don’t need all your theatrics and old-man gyrations.
+1
The NBA has become just two steps away from the WWE.
But we all need to stop with the ‘bad officiating’ card. That’s the stuff suns fans pull when they consistently fall short. We lost this game, pure and simple. I don’t even think they won, per se, so much as we beat ourselves. Period. Only us to blame.

by SgtinManusArmy on May 5, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Joey Crawford evidently has a personal vendetta against the Spurs. He gave Timmeh a tech for laughing on the bench. It was so outrageous that even Stern had to punish him. Then he came back, and our record in the games he is officiating is much worse than our overall record. Is that a coincidence? I don’t think so. This is not just a bad officiating. This is playing 5 on 6 every time he is on the court. And he is on for 48 minutes and has a whistle.
I am here to state the obvious.
Totally with you, it just sounds and makes us look bad to go there though. We lost, pure and simple. Yes Crawford was there, but we’re collectively better than just him. And that his mere presence won’t be the headline or the byline in the history books.
True champions rise above the officials, both on the court and on the Rock.

Of course, I hoped we would win in spite of JC, but we didn’t, which is sad. I try not to bitch about officials too much, but JC’s record against us is just ridiculous. I understand your point, and it is a good point. As I see it, there are NBA refs, who sometimes make bad calls, treat stars differently, etc. And there is Joey, and you just know in advance that we will play 5 on 6, if he is reffing.
I am here to state the obvious.
Blame it on me, PtR’rs.
I made a game-time decision not to let my puppy watch the game with me no matter how much she whined (because the Spurs lost the last time I let her), but she got loose somehow and ran in just in time to see Frye make a three in the first half. I hustled her out of the room right away, but the damage to the mojo was done… the Suns pulled even by the end of the half, and it went downhill after that.
Wasted some nice supporting performances by RJ and Hill (I kinda predicted they’d play better tonight), but as I feared going into the series, not holding down their ‘other guys’ (Hill, Dudley, Frye) hurt us. Transition D was much better, but defensive rebounding was terrible (though in truth, it’s hard when we’re playing small ball). FT differential was what, -15? And those effin’ threes… I think Manu hit 2, Hill one or two, and Duncan one. Bonner? Take him out of the rotation (though to be fair, Bogans hurt himself with some bone-headed defensive plays, one right in front of Pop… thought Coach was going to explode!)
Manu, basketball genius that he is, ...
Just looking at the stat line from a sort of ‘impartial point of view’ – my wife ….

Her words – “either they just couldn’t keep them off the glass or some ref f’ed them tonight” – and she was in the other room not even watching. I’m not sayin’ it’s reffing – we freaking couldn’t get a board to save our collective butts…but the Suns had no business winning that game, save for the 15 extra free-bies they got and that flurry of offensive boards by thier bench in the 2nd quarter.
