Good idea. Manu can set him up for scores and he doesn’t have to be the primary ball handler. Then Tony and RMJ off the bench. Now, start Blair with Manu and sit Timmy. Do not repeat the NJ mistake.

by SpurredOn on Apr 6, 2010 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

If Temple, truly starts over both Parker and Mason, then I think it’s safe to assume Pop is trying to get some rotation consistency and that Parker will be coming off the bench for awhile. Why else do you move a guy who isn’t going to be on the playoff roster into the starting lineup? He is just a placeholder for Hill to kick the rotations off….if this is true.

by BlaseE on Apr 6, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Word. I actually like the idea of TP coming off the bench. I like the consistency the team has right now, plus you don’t have to worry about Mason running point for the second team…and TP can ball hog all he wants with the second team as long as he scores. It also helps if you give TP a couple of corner shooters, that seems to be the only pass he can complete anyways.

by Sh!fty on Apr 6, 2010 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I never actually thought of it this way. He gets to dominate and with shooters like Bonner, Bogans, Hairston, and Mason, it could work. He would act essentially as our post us guy (drawing double teams to open up the shooters) when he drives into the lane. Blair is actually playing better now than he was in the beginning of the season. The numbers are not the same but anyone can see that his decision making has vastly improved. I don’t think he is still hitting a wall I just think he’s learned to take his time and make the right play. Bonner is better, playing defense now too. Bogans is solid. Hairston doing his thing. Mase….well he’s there too. BAM could be back again

"I've got Tim (Duncan) and you don't. That's the difference." -Gregg Popovich

by bj1der on Apr 6, 2010 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I argued xman’s stance for awhile and still think it’s pretty strong….I don’t think it really matters though because Pop doesn’t sub the starting 5 for bench 5. All that really matters is getting Tony who is far better than everyone one our bench, back into the rotation. The fact is Hill, Manu, and Parker can all play excellent with and without each other. Let’s focus on the with.

Let’s say we have 2 guard spots on the court all game, 96 minutes. Let’s say Bogans and Mason can play guard and forward but Manu, Hill, and Parker are explicitly guards. Hill can play 35+. Manu should be held to 32 minutes. I’m thinking Parker, once he gets back into it, should also be around 32. Of course, in the playoffs, Manu and Tony could play maybe 36 max. We are loaded at the guard spots when all three are healthy. Sprinkle in 5 minutes for maybe Mason or Bogans as needed at the guards but let them fill in for RJ mostly.

The bigger question is who finishes the game. If we can guard the opposing team playing Hill, Manu, and Parker, should we bench RJ? We know RJ should not be playing the 4.

by BlaseE on Apr 6, 2010 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Who finishes? I think that will depend first on whether we’re in the lead or trailing. Then will be based on who’s had the hot hand, matchups and foul trouble. Remember that Bowen was only usually out there late in a playoff game if we were tied or in the lead. If we trail, Pop will go with whichever lineup is producing more points or advantages on the offensive end.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Apr 6, 2010 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree fully on this. The best role for TP right now is to eliminate our Manu on the bench/inability to score section of the game. Basically, he’d be filling in Mason’s present ‘dribble around then shoot without passing the ball once’ role. Only he’d be doing it with a higher degree of skill.

by Neuwaldegg on Apr 6, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Can someone explain the whole playoff roster thingy to me? Are D-Leaguers called up after the waiver deadline eligible if not previously on a team (like Temple)?

by CapHill on Apr 6, 2010 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I looked it up and was wrong….we can have 15 players on the playoff roster with any 12 of those eligible to play in any single game….

Gee is not eligible because he was signed after a certain date. Jerrells and Temple will be eligible.

by BlaseE on Apr 6, 2010 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

So our 12: TD, Dice, Manu, Parker, Hill, RJ, Bogans, Blair, Mason, and Bonner for sure. Hairston is highly likely.

Then your pick of Ian, Temple, Gee and Jerrells. Gee and Jerrells might the least likely since they have played the least for us and are the most useful of the 4 to the Toros who are also entering the playoffs soon, I think.

I hope they aren’t rushing him back because of the injury to Hill. It would suck to have him reinjure the hand. Then again, maybe they were holding Parker out extra long since Hill was playing so well. Only CIA Pop knows.

Maybe Temple will come out with a beret, a fake mustache, and a Parker jersey.

Obviously only one of the above (the beret) would actually be a clever disguise but you never know what the hell Pop is thinking.

by CapHill on Apr 6, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

all of the reports I had read said he could only shoot, but couldn’t catch or dribble yet, then he said during the Lakers game interview that he was dribbling

maybe we are rushing him, but maybe we need to be….we need to get him back into the rotation and make him a part of this winning momentum we are on….we are also shorthanded by Hill’s in jury and need him…he can also help us reduce TD and Manu’s minutes

on the otherhand, we could baby him and maybe he doesn’t gel or is out of rhythm and messes up in the playoffs and then he goes and plays for the french team and comes back next season all fucked up…we need him now so he should play…like Brent Barry said on NBA TV last night, “for the Western conference teams, the playoffs started last Monday”

by BlaseE on Apr 6, 2010 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Solid point. Maybe we are rushing him because we need him back. But with Manu handling the ball he could essentially be a spot up shooter, not from three of course. Hey, an injured Tony Parker is still better then Roger Mason Jr. running the point so we should count our blessings

Spurs website has confirmed that Parker “has been cleared to play.” But you all know how much confidence I have in the Spurs orthopedic doctors after they didn’t put Manu in a walking boot in February for the “stress reaction”, then cleared him to play, which then became a stress fracture, or how Manu kept playing in the 2008 playoffs when the ligament in his ankle was swollen to 5 times normal size (okay – I know they would have had to tie him down to keep him out of the lineup against the Lakers, but still . . . You’ve got to wonder sometimes).

by janieannie on Apr 6, 2010 4:37 PM CDT reply actions

Sounds like they are still on your sh*t list. And I know you don’t like a lot of cursing, but is there another term for sh*t list?

by Big50 on Apr 6, 2010 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I have sometimes wondered about the Spurs strength and conditioning coach…Mike Brungardt. Especially around the time Manu and Mason pulled their groins. And it seems the workouts he designed for Tim Duncans offseasons previous to this year, were too strenuous. ( I dont know that Tim needed to be squatting down and turning 300 lb tractor tired over and over in order to keep in shape, but then again I am not an accomplished trainer )

But the team physicians, you gotta think those guys are some of the best in the field if the Spurs are employing them to keep the meal tickets running at optimum level. Lets hope the stress reaction thing was an aberration.

I’ve always been amazed at the Phoenix trainers and what they seem to do with players on the Suns roster. Look at Shaq, Nash and Grant Hill. Even when they’re out, it’s not for long. We need to hire their staff.

by xman130 on Apr 6, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

that is my biggest fear. Having a healthy team should be of prime importance for the Spurs. Hope Tony buys into this and Pop play his cards carefully. I also wish I could see Tim and Manu rest a little more. I felt like Manu was running on fumes during the last 5 mins of the lakers game.

by Heman on Apr 6, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Tony probably could have been playing a few games earlier; we always take our time to get players back from injuries. He should explode out of the gates if given a lot of playing time. His injury has little to do with conditioning then I see no reason why he can’t handle a good amount of minutes if his plantar facitis is better.
