Oh, I wasn’t asking, that’s just the standard answer when some redneck proudly pats his beer belly and calls it a shed for his tractor. And it is promptly followed by A Sears Lawn Tractor?? But I was trying to be nice, something I usually fail at miserably.
No Mr Smith, and it didn’t have anything to do with his tractor.

Congratulations San Antonians
This was a great series. A series to remember. You have a great team, you really surprised me. I guess injuries played a big part in your early struggles, but you stepped up big time in the playoffs.
We are all lucky to have this two teams going off against each other every year like there’s no tomorrow. Good luck in your quest for the 5th. I guess our time will come some time. See you next season.
thanks

I don’t mean to be contrary about Dirk, but I just don’t see this. Yeah, he often delivers 30+ point games when it matters in LOSING efforts.
But it’s that “LOSING” word that always convinces me that he truly doesn’t have what it takes, a killer instinct, or a champions mentality. “Winners” do what it takes to win, regardless, and are successful. Dirk just never has been. I think that’s pretty telling.
I think I’d rather even be a horrible player on a winning team than a phenominal player on a perennial failure.

David had tons of talent around him? Seriously? Other than Sean, name 3 others who today aren’t coaching at a Y somewhere.
David was an impeccable ALL-AROUND talent (unlike Dirk) but not the best on-court leader or player with killer instinct. Teammates from this time period even said as much.
All I said is that I don’t see “star that steps up.” I see a star that 3 out of the last 4 years has been bounced in the 1st round. In addition, for Dirk’s time in Dallas and being 1 of 4 teams all-time to have 10 50+ win seasons…. they have 0 rings, the only team in this catagory to have that stat. Those facts don’t give with “star that steps up” in my book. You can’t blame his team, when many talented pieces have been put around him and he’s proven capable of disappointing expectations whether his team is able or not.
It’s simple. Winners win. Period. Want me to consider him a “star that steps up?” Have him will his team to win a game that matters. Not even a series. Just one game.
Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
He’s probably a really swell guy and he has a beautiful jump shot. That’s awesome. He’ll have those things to be proud of when every other “star who steps up” is still playing next week.

2006 WC semifinals, Mavericks vs. Spurs, Game 7 @ San Antonio. Dirk scores the basket, and-1 to send the game to OT which the Mavs eventually win. Of course Dallas spectacularly collapsed in the Finals via Ref-gate, but there’s your “game that matters.”

winners win? what a self-fulfilling definition there.
the concept of someone being a winner (beyond the definition of actually winning), as if its some innate thing that people posess, its one of the most tired, cliched, ill-informed concepts that float around sports.
sorry sima, i fucking loathe the concept, and always have. its bullshit talk in my opinion. this isn’t about dirk, or the admiral, or anyone. its about a stupid idea that means jack shit in my books.

some mix well, and some don’t, because of rhythmic structure, harmonic structure, chords, keys, quantization…sorry, i’ll stop.
the main reason i don’t believe in mojo is because i used to believe it as a kid. watching tennis, wimbledon, with my mum as a kid, i honestly believed that if i was sitting in a particular way, and then changed position, the person i wanted to win would lose, because it seemed to happen a few times. hey, i was like 7 years old, it made sense!
i realised i was wrong a few years later when i found out the games i was watching…werenit live. they were delayed by 2-3 hours. so….yeah.

As srf pointed out, it’s still a team game. I believe Dirk is a winner. It’s just sad though that he has to go up against three winners, no, make that five with George and Dice.

If it’s any consolation, Popovich did the same thing to us last year when he held out Hill saying that “these playoffs aren’t for George Hill”. He’s slightly holding out Blair, too but not as much (ie. he even told DeJuan during a timeout, “Just be DeJuan Blair”). RC will figure it out.
And oh yeah, Cuban’s paying him 2 more years and still paying Avery, so that’s pretty messed up.
Just cause we're crippled, don't mean we gotta take the crumbs.
by silverandblack_davis on Apr 29, 2010 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions
Do you think that he could make Avery keep coaching? I mean, is Avery technically still a Mavs employee? That would be awesome. If I were an owner and needed to fire a coach, I’d just make him be my butler or something.
The other problem is that Cuban always trades for talent, but never necessarily talent that works well together. Marion didn’t fit on this team, neither did Butler. Haywood kind of did, but not as the single defensive player on the court.
+1
Just cause we're crippled, don't mean we gotta take the crumbs.
by silverandblack_davis on Apr 29, 2010 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions
But you have to admit the Butler and Haywood trade for JHo trade was a good trade.
Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.
Well I think this trade makes my point exactly. Haywood had one good game in the playoffs. And he (and Dampier) were key to this series because they allowed the Spurs to play off a man and double Dirk on occasion. How many Big shots did Haywood hit off of double teams? How many big defensive plays? Offensive rebounds?
As for Butler, he came up big at times scoring the ball, but he killed the teams ball movement. A team that depends on fluid ball movement (Partiularly Kidd and Marion) to score consistently. what’s the point of having Kidd on your team when the ball stops the minute CB touches it? He won them two games when he got hot, was that worth it?
That’s my point though. It was a great trade purely from a talent perspective, undoubtedly. But it bit them in the ass because the Spurs exploited the personnel issues it created.
but never necessarily talent that works well together
Reason #47 why I’m a San Antonio SPURS fan.

Carlisle talking about Beaubois, didn’t really admit that he shoulda had him playing more earlier in the series.
Thing that bothers me is that Dallas (i.e. Cuban) can go home thinking, IF ONLY they’d played different guys at key points, they coulda won the series. The games were close enough that Cuban might be thinking that and not blow up the team, as he usually does when the Mavs disappoint. The current Mavs roster, if they have a full season playing together, could be a real pain in the butt next year.
honestly i see one more run ( i know it sounds redundant) we’re getting rid of damp for a decent player via S&T. We pay damp 12 mill to do nothing. either way i see one or two major shakeups for my mavs. Good series. highly entertaining

It killed me to see Damp collecting millions at Golden State and I was glad to see him go be the Mavs’ problem. Do you think that there’s a team desperate enough for a slow-footed center just to occupy space in the lane that they’d take on his contract? Or would Cuban be so desperate to get rid of him that he’d pay him to play elsewhere? He did that with Finley, and look how that worked out… ;-)
I want to take on Portland but Phoenix is too much. The Spurs know they should start preparing for Nash and Amare.

Dallas, disappointed… again. Or maybe should that be “Dallas disappoints again”
First franchise ever to lose to a 7th seed and an 8th seed. That’s gotta leave a mark…
Q: “Will Dirk opt out of his option year?” (The reporter asking Carlisle this clearly didn’t hear Charles Barkley say at halftime, “No one in his right mind walks away from $21 million”)
Credit to Dallas in that they didn’t fold mentally as I expected (except for a few bad fouls/mistakes) after going down 20+ and mounted another huge run to take the lead (for 20 sec.) Also props to Dirk, who made a point of finding Timmy after the game. Classy, I wouldn’t mind it if he were a Spur. :)

I really don’t get why Carlisle was in love with Jason Kidd. Kept him in even though he wasn’t clicking in this series.
maybe like pop’s love for mason—he thought maybe kidd can run the offense shoot some threes or defend tony or manu, and oh—-kidd is a veteran and not a rookie—-so like mason’s sucktitude last year, carlisle should learn a lesson like what pop learned last year—-and cliches of being a rookie on playoffs game should be over—-i mean when rookies like roddy and hill would help ur team—-they play

Kidd sucked. You can see it when the Spurs run out on him and Kidd penetrates. No one picks him up, and everyone’s just waiting to pick off the pass. Plus no D. Good thing Rick kept him in, or else this series would’ve been a toss up.
Substitute Beaubois for Kidd and it changes the matchups, maybe even the complexion of the series. otoh, I would’ve like to see more of the Parker-Duncan pick-and-roll when Beaubois was guarding Tony, to see if we could make Roddy’s time on the floor into a liability for the Mavs.
by TeamDefense on Apr 29, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Let’s see…
Manu’s healthy.
Tim’s healthy.
Parker got hurt but is now healthy and providing spark off the bench.
Dice’s D and outside J.
RJ… when he’s on.
Hill’s “coming out” series.
Blair, the rookie with more heart than height.
Remember though, with all the new players this year, they really came together late, not during the Rodeo road-trip as usual. In retrospect, that should have been expected, as Pop’s system isn’t easy.
Pop did throw out half the playbook at the start of the season. That’s why we’d been so discouraged up until about a month ago.

I feel like Manu’s been “off” since he injured his nose, like that bandage is bothering him. I don’t have any stats or specifics to back it up, just a gut feeling while watching him be good, but not great.
Manu was definitely off in Games 4 & 5, but hit a crucial three in Game 3 (I think?) and definitely was ‘on’ tonight, on both ends of the floor.

Yeah, but the ‘expert’ opinion was that the Spurs had their day and were done… they forgot that San Antonio was famous for years for lying in the weeds waiting for the playoffs to ambush bigger-market teams that get all the press.
I will admit though that this year’s Spurs looked poised to me for a first-round exit, until late in the season, when Manu got RJ going in the flow and developed a reliable pick-and-roll game with Blair. And it’s evident now that TD, Dice, Manu, TP, etc. were saving their best for the playoffs; something that the ‘experts’ (and I to a certain extent) had not expected.

The Suns are very comparable to the Mavs in that they are only great in a fast-paced game. And we just proved that we can shut that kind of team down. I think the Suns will be a much better match-up than the Mavs were. Looking forward to it. Spurs in 5, no joke.

And we’re only going to get better, especially Hill and Blair. This series taught them so much and they both endured the pressure and performed. I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again: We are watching George Hill transform into a superstar. He will be our Derick Rose. PERIOD

Hill has better D, better range, and doesn’t drive as much because he doesn’t have to. I think D Rose wants to be George Hill!
Game. Set. Match. Watch him develop those movies. He plays with Manu and Tony. You can’t tell me he’s not going to learn how to move like them. He is special.
Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.
George probably won’t ever be as good of a ball handler as Rose is (I think he’s the best in the league at handling) but he can improve his strength and overall game. I’m not going to call him Derrick Rose but he is surely superstar material.
"I've got Tim (Duncan) and you don't. That's the difference." -Gregg Popovich
I honestly don’t think he is superstar material (I think his ceiling is probably borderline all star if that, certainly starting point guard for a championship contender), but I can tell you one thing, he has ice running through his veins
I love him, and I think it’s great that we have a stud like him that can take such a heavy load of manu and TP’s shoulders right now, hopefully we get Splitter next season, and some other nice young rookies
but let’s not worry about the future now, the present is still here
i love d rose and hill…hill and rose plays defense only george is two levels better…rose’s skill in defying gravity is legendary to me..idk with you guys…both are very promising humble stars—-one loves the rim and tony-esque jumpers the other(hill)can shoot from corner threes to jumpers to lay ups…both are great defenders i just hope there were less stars in the west like in the east for hill to be recognized and be an all star like rose.

The Mavs are going to make a heavy push for Larry Brown. Mark it down. LB’s about to bail on the poor bobcats (in his usual routine), and I’ve been of the opinion he’s going to try and follow LeBron. I bet Cuban tries to buy him up though.
Does Cuban have enough room under the cap to get LeBron or Dwayne? That would be scary…

Good night my fellow Spurs fans.
Final props to my man McDyess. He was a stud. Whatever bad I said about him, I take it back. He played like a bad ass for most of the series. We wouldn’t have won without his defense and wicked attitude.
Dice, you have earned your place in Spurs history my man. McDyess and George Hill have brass cones.
It has been a long time since I remember watching the Iceman on my black and white television, but Hill brought back those moments.
We still need a huge improvement in our interior defense, but this series win is big. Make no mistake, the Mavs were dreaming of a championship run. This was and is a historic loss for them.
To quote Pat Riley, “There are only two things, winning and misery.”.
Have a nice bus ride home Mavs. See you in the history books boys.

I stopped reading that sh!t when I saw someone post that SA was clearing the way for LA to reach the finals again.
WHY do people assume that Dallas was going to win a 7-game playoff series against LA? I admit that the Mavs have talent and look good on paper and even didn’t check out mentally when things got tough for them this year, but they haven’t proven that they’re made of championship timber, not yet anyway.

D@mn, the way Grant Hill is playing right now, George may not be the best NBA player named “Hill” tonight, despite his clutch threes to put the Mavs away.
This version of the Suns may be tougher than previous ones… it’s not just Amare, Nash, and a bunch of run-and-gunners now. They’re able to stop drives into the paint much better now (because of Frye and Dudley, maybe?), and Hill and Richardson can break down half-court defenses.
Blazers got within 4, Dudley hit a 3. Sigh.
Kinda surprised with McMillan’s comment that “Hill can’t guard everyone”. Who knew THAT Hill would be a defensive stopper?
Grant Hill was always a terrific defender before all his injuries. I’ve heard people say he could have bean the GOAT if he didn’t get injured. Imagine that
"I've got Tim (Duncan) and you don't. That's the difference." -Gregg Popovich
Well the knock on their team is that they aren’t built for the playoffs. They look great in the season but everything slows down in the playoffs. The Mavs don’t know how to grind.
Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.
Wouldn’t mind taking Dirk if he signs for the minimum….o.0

They do have some age problems starting to emerge.
Only four players under 30: Barea (25), Beaubois (22), Carroll (29), and Stevenson (29).

Chuck Barkley said during the half-time break something to the effect of no one in their right mind walks away from $21 million.
Question is, could Dirk get more from another team? I doubt it, and there are younger free-agents competing for limited dollars this year (especially with salary cap and lock-out considerations).
Now, will he and Cuban talk about what they need going forward? I’d imagine so, but is there anything to discuss that hasn’t been said before? One possibility… Dirk might agree to restructure his contract to open up space to bring in another impact player, adding years but reducing up-front money.

In any event, congratulations Spurs! You took care of business when it counted, and withstood some furious runs from a loaded, dangerous team. I was especially happy to see flashes of your patented team defense.
This will be a hard fought series. Looking forward to it. Impressed with the Spurs play so far, for many reasons, and the Suns are tougher now(But that’s the same thing they said about the Mavs.) This will be fun to watch regardless of how it goes.
"I've got Tim (Duncan) and you don't. That's the difference." -Gregg Popovich
now we have George Hill, who, despite not being as good a defender as Bruce
he is a better scorer so Nash won’t be able to rest on anyone, and really hope RJ gets it going in this series, he should be able to get more freedom to run and roam against the suns
If bonner (or anyone with a 3pt shot) ever shows up, we should be able to roll them pretty comfortably

Suns vs. Spurs
I see McDyess on Amar’’’’e, like he was on Nowitzki. Hill / Parker on Nash, Manu on .. Richardson? What do you guys think? Also I saw Nash sit for SEVERAL minutes while thier bench performed admirably, but I doubt thier bench would be able to do that to ours – Blair and Tony would make sure of that.

Aye, and about the Nash thing – if his back is bothering him that much that he can’t (unless necessary) go for several minutes a stretch that just bodes super well for us. I think our trump card has to be Hill though – we’ve never had someone of his absolute caliber vs. the Suns.

My sincere apologies!
I think Tim would be on whoever else they throw out there for a center – I don’t think the Suns would be dumb enough to put Amar’’’’’e (sorry, it’s just fun to say it that way) on Timmy – that would just mean quick foul trouble. That would also most likely keep Tim able to do whatever he needs on offense.

J-Rich is a big factor for the Suns. If he’s playing well, it’s most likely that the Suns win. I don’t know if RJ can contain him or maybe Bogans, but I’d like Richardson to pull off a Marion in this series.
