Game 5: Spurs @ Mavs - Game Thread Part 2
Twenty-four more minutes of pain left. Let's tough it out.
And because I won't be able to join in the game threads, here is my contribution... or offering to whatever it is that will help the team win this game and clinch the series.
FIGHT!
FINISH HIM!!!

FATALITY...
VICTOLY.

Anyone think parker should start the second half and manu come off the bench? I know u prolly wont agree with me but parker is looking better than ginobili right now.
No reason to react greatly yet. We’re still up 3-1, and we brought back hope going into halftime. Just need to work on transition D and force this back into a half court game. We’re all good.
And stop playing fuckin’ Mason, that would help too.

Ramen. But considering how craptacular that 1st half was on our part, I’m surprised we’re only down 7.
Exactly. And that’s what Pop is saying now. We sat Tim for a long stretch, suited Mason up tonight, 3s aren’t falling, we’re in dallas, we’re not penetrating or playing rough…. and we’re still down just 7. It’s all good. The 2nd half is ours.

Yes that would. Except i think parker can tear up the mavs. No one can guard him. But yes we both agree that mason needs to stop playing
No one can guard Barea either it seems, but that doesn’t mean he should be a starter.
And yes, Mason is a corpse.

you know i really doubt manu is losing the ball on his own. he is having help and the refs arent calling it.
I’d expect that from most teams, not us. Even the Mavs closed us out in a game 5 on the road last year

Completely agree about not seeing Temple. You know it’s bad when the Mavs announcers are ripping on Mason. Something like 27 minutes, 0 points, 0 rebounds, 1 assist. Glad he’s getting minutes.
Well its pretty obvious why the spurs threw this game. They need to pay for Jefferson contract still.

Okay, even though I’m sure there’s plenty of blame to go around, this is my fault, ladies.
I know better. Never in history have we won when I was on the road during the playoffs. I had to go to NM this week for work and didn’t have a choice. Not even Timmy can overcome those odds. But I’ve already changed plans and will be driving home tomorrow, in plenty of time for Thursday night.
And yes, I know, it’s not over. But if you’ve been a SPURS fan longer than a week you know what you’re seeing- ridiculous, un-Spurlike decisions on the court; no defense; poor shot selection; etc. All common signs of Pop wanting to completely and utterly psychologically devastate a team, like by allowing them a glimmer of hope before annhiliating them at home. Hold the faith, folks.
Nite. GO SPURS GO.

this game is just giving caron butler confidence. why on earth would we want that? this is just a bad effort overall. not good.
Lose this game by 30 maybe make Dallas overconfident for Thursday?
I can’t see the logic in that. They’re playing for their life, confidence doesn’t apply.
maybe pop just want to give dallas some love—-don’t worry in san antonio we’ll have our time

Is anyone worried? I am. This isnt some young team we r facing. The mavs have the best road record in the nba and game 6 isnt guaranteed. Butler now has confidence and carlisle isnt playing ericka anymore. I really hope its impossible for ginobili and duncan to have 3 bad games in a row.
First – not impossible. Second, don’t be fooled – the Mavs with confidence are good enough to beat the Spurs even with good games. I am not worried, but am not overconfident about it either.
God damn, this pregnant Platy I have looks like its about to burst.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
I was definitely expecting the Mavs to be pumped and the Spurs to be a little complacent (even though they should not be. Human Nature!!!)
But this was really bad.
I guess that’s the difference between a close game and a blowout.

Just got back to my hotel, opened some wine – was this as bad on TV as it was in the arena? Looking at Pop and the bench, he decided to tank this one in the second quarter. And Manu never got comfortable in his nasal splint in the first half – kept fooling with it and they redid it at halftime. Something just wasn’t right with him tonight, but then something wasn’t right with a lot of guys tonight. I won’t have any photos of this one largely because of the Mavs fan in front of me who stood up with every shot.

Manu didn’t have a great game since getting the extension. Timmeh didn’t have a good game since turning 34. We cannot rely on George Hill to carry us every night. We are in trouble.
I am here to state the obvious.
Manu has not had a great game since his extension? There is much more to having a great game than scoring 39 points. Manu has had several great games in this series alone. Have you been watching any of the games…?
The Spurs = Not your granddaddies 7th seed !
Manu had some good games and great plays, but he didn’t have a game where he dominated as he had done in almost every game in March. Timmeh won game 2 for us, Tony finished game 3, and George put us on his back in game 4. Manu was good, but he never was our best player.
I am here to state the obvious.
Playing with a broken nose aside, Tony’s minutes and possessions have increased so Manu doesn’t handle the ball as much as he did in that dominant stretch.

Barkley says the Spur should be worried about Duncan since he only scored 11 points. Um, Charles: Dirk only scored 15. Should the Mavs be worried? And Duncan got his in 24 minutes. Amazing how people panic over one loss but ask that you keep perspective after three wins.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Well, I worry about Timmeh scoring 15 points in two games. I worry about Manu’s broken nose, which seem to affect his shooting. Now the Mavs are outscoring us in the series. Tonight they beat us more soundly than in the last game of the reg.season, which we tanked away. We got lucky in games 3 and 4. Now we need either to get lucky again, or play better, so that we won’t need a luck to win another game. May be it’s time to bench Manu and start Tony again.
I am here to state the obvious.
Winning with 0 3-pointers made is very unusual, so I call it lucky. Also, Tony was exceptional in the clutch time. In game 4 we were down 15, then roared back behind George Hill of all people, with Tim Duncan unable to make a basket. Both games were very close.
I am here to state the obvious.
Bottom line is we won two very close games at home that could go either way. None of those two games looked like tonight’s whipping.
I am here to state the obvious.
None of those games had one team with a two game lead in the series. These guys are human.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I guess, I kind of hoped that we can take game 5 at their place and get a complete revenge for last year. Now this is a series again. We need to get more from Timmeh and Manu than what we got in last two games.
I am here to state the obvious.
I wanted it too, for the symmetry in the vengeance. But I also know how much it will mean to Spurs fans to witness the elimination of the Mavs live and in-person, in San Antonio. It’s what we didn’t get in ‘06. It’s where it all ended, with trash talking fans and a celebrating Dampier, last season. That still has meaning. The players know it. And it doesn’t hurt that Mr. Holt gets one more home game.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I agree. I wouldn’t mind to watch one more Spurs game, if it’s a good game.
I am here to state the obvious.
Dallas got lucky in game 1. Spurs were not lucky in game 3, don’t know why you would think that. They had one awful stretch in the third quarter but were otherwise better throughout. Outscoring in the series is of zero importance. Suns outscored the Spurs in 2007; it got them sent home 4-2. Luck is not what’s needed for game 6, just a return to the efficient ball movement and shooting that was present for games 2, 3 and large parts of 1 and the second half of 4. Tonight it was all one on one with little ball or player movement.
I agree that Manu has not been right since he injured his nose. Understandably. Hopefully having played a bit more with it plus two more days to heal will help him feel more comfortable. Seeing as how the entire team played poorly and with no sense if urgency, it’s hard to judge a player like Manu. In a normal game he could struggle early then take over in the 4th. No such opportunity tonight.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Not too worried
This game wasn’t really surprising. I never expected the Spurs to beat the Mavs in 5 games before the playoffs started. They had just won 3 in a row against a very very good team and now had to play on the road after a tough tough game 4. Butler obviously has only played well at home this series, and the Mavs didn’t look like they were rushed as they have on the road. Their runs came just as they did in the 2nd quarter of game 4: on the break. Butler scored when he was left with plenty of time in a 1 on 1, and Dirk scored when he was pulling up on the break or wasn’t hounded. Sure, I’m still disappointed, but I highly doubt that the Mavs will pull together everything that they did tonight and repeat that on Thursday. Duncan and Ginobili got their rest, Spurs are at home, and the pressure of being in an elimination game will really be felt by the Mavs when Nowitzki is being hounded on defense against the roar of a Spurs crowd. Their performance tonight doesn’t show me anything new to make me worry any more about game 6. Every now and then you have a bad game. As long as they didnt have 3 bad games in a row after game 4, they were gonna win the series.
Just a note on the Mavs crowd last night – they were no where near as loud as the Spurs home crowds have been. The loudest noise seemed to come as they booed every foul called against a Maverick, even the very obvious ones, and booed again as they were shown on the replay. It took Jason Terry getting off the bench, walking the baseline, to get them to really cheer. BTW: Note the heat pack on Terry’s left ankle.
