I think I will have to discuss with SiMA and bella how the mojo works between series (if we win). Does it change?
That’s why I haven’t came in for the game threads. I showed up in game 1 and we lost. And since I haven’t come back: 3-0. Just sayin’.
Don’t be lured into what some are doing, dismantling the mojo theory and negating your very influence. Stay strong. For the SPURS.

Dude, it’s a change of venue again. He can join in on the game thread.
But then again, I could be wrong. There are so many variables… there’s also the drinking issue… that could affect everything.
I leave the mojo in your capable hands, Sima.

This game was a serious test of faith for the Spurs faithful. But to fight back from 17 down, with two of the Big Three throwing up bricks, shows how we’re indisputably Championship caliber. George completely lost his mind from the 2nd quarter on, and kept us in it while we just kept pounding away at the Mavs, watching like vultures for the impending emotional meltdown. Dice was HUGE. RJ came to play. And Manu made ‘em when it counted. Cuban weeps.
And it’s a beautiful thing.
"What is this new devilry?" -Jeff Van Gundy
Hill played a tremendous game, but Jefferson deserves a lot of credit as well. He’s been solid in two wins this series. I wouldn’t have thought it was be possible to beat a team like Dallas with Duncan and Ginobili shooting 5-25. It wouldn’t have been possible a year ago, certainly.
Asked before the game how Parker has looked, Popovich said, "He’s still cute. "
Yeah, RJ played well. Good showing from our “extra three” – Hill, RJ and Blair.
Bogans should never play.

My theory is that Bonner has played in Dallas so many times over the past few years that he’s exhausted all of Dallas’ prime sandwich eateries. If we get past this series and go to some place he’s less familiar with, he will find a new sandwich place, get back his personal mojo, and make seven hundred threes in one game.

Though I disagree with the defensive philosophy to double Dirk all game, the benefit on Tuesday is that we won doing it and now can go back to taking away everyone else. Maybe Dirk will expect all the doubles and will find himself confused and his shot just a bit off.

i have to say, i actually kind of like dirk. i wish he weren’t a mav. there was a recent article in either ESPN the mag or SI about him and i think he’s a really likeable guy. goofy, intelligent, lonely. i felt bad for him.
but then he broke Manu’s nose and now i hate him.
We’d have to. But he’d be far from my favorite SPUR. He’d probably be my 13th favorite SPUR. On the roster.

Disagree. If he was a Spur Pop would make him work on becoming tougher. Either he would toughen up or quit the team as Pop would yell at him too much. Dirk is ultimately responsible for himself, but it is also the Mavs coaching staff’s fault for enabling him.
Dirk would cower under Pop, I’d bet money on it.

Definitely. And that’s my point- Dirk would never BE a Spur. He couldn’t be. He doesn’t have the testicular fortitude, the overall skillset, the leadership qualities, the defensive abilities, etc.
And that’s a pretty good set of reasons (see the segue here?) why I don’t like or respect him. For me, if you can’t be a Spur, you don’t get much love.

There’s respect on both ends. Dallas wants to do what San Antonio has achieved, then being in the same state and division intensifies that. Then in the past decade, the only teams to beat the Spurs in the playoffs are Dallas or L.A.
Asked before the game how Parker has looked, Popovich said, "He’s still cute. "
It’s a huge hump to get over. David Robinson was always too nice to win it all.

1) cuban- i love him b/c he’s my team’s owner. I’m sure if he was running the rockets or hornets, i’d find him amusing, but loathe him and his antics. If anything I love the fact that he is living out the ultimate fan’s dream of buying and owning your favorite team.
2) dirk’s gonna have to be a #2 scoring option with a dominant, basket driving sg or pg…when harris left. it was game over
It’s a good thing Cuban’s got deep pockets. It probably boils down to finding the right players. And Dallas should let Dampier go and pick up a younger, more athletic center to back up Haywood.

I don’t know if I buy that. If you replaced Tim with Dirk over the past 10 years and give him the same supporting cast, I can’t imagine the Mavs lose as much as they have in the playoffs.
When you’re the superstar, especially in basketball, you get the credit for winning and the criticism with losing. At some point you’ve gotta step up and carry the team.

I’ve always disliked Dirk, mostly because I see his facial responses (whining and sneering and boasting) during games. But after really really studying his play, I began to dislike him even more. He’s the posterboy for how NOT to play basketball. He’d be the guy you’d never ever bring up if you were coaching kids the fundamentals.
I have no respect for players like him; really only where they are because of a genetic condition. Think about it- if Dirk just happened to not be tall, where would he be? No defense, shots contrived using his length and height, minimal ball-handling skills, poor leadership, etc. Contrast that with a player like David Robinson- a player whom you could argue, would have even made a good forward or guard.

Like Barkley was saying the other day. Skilled big man are scarce this days. They grow up being bigger than everyone so they dont have to develop any skill. The fact that he can jump like he can is admirable.
"If an expert says it can't be done, get another expert"

“Jump like he can?!”
You mean, “Able to clear a stapler with a single bound?!”
Barkley was right. Only I wouldn’t consider Dirk a ‘skilled big man,’ because he very seldom if never plays that. I’d consider him a very tall guard, or small forward who happens to be tall. Which segues right back to why I don’t respect him- he didn’t have to develop any more skill using his body because of his great shooting, and thus simply chose to rely on that alone. RATHER THAN CREATE A MORE WELL-ROUNDED GAME.
And all of these Dirk comments, and we haven’t even brought up defense. I don’t even have to mention the fact that Dirk couldn’t guard a corpse to make my point.

You’re dismissing how difficult it is to learn to play like him with his size. I’m sure he put a lot of effort into his game – years upon years of training and training. World-class athletes don’t depend just on their talent to succeed.
I don’t like the guy much, because he’s a whiner. But “leadership” is a vague concept, and I don’t like using it to belittle a player. It speaks well of him that he learnt to shoot using his length, his height – his natural gifts. What was he supposed to do? Shoot in ways that don’t give him an advantage?
I’m not saying he’s perfect, but I feel you’re overly critical because you don’t like him as a person.
I smell death... everywhere.
And that’s a fair, howbeit inaccurate, assumption. I don’t like him, because I don’t respect his game.
A player with his ability who put the time and energy into learning to play the post well would be an icon, a once-in-a-lifetime talent, a GOAT player. Not that he hasn’t spent time, but… he hasn’t. He’s comfortable enough with shooting from outside over smaller players instead of bodying up in the paint frequently and being an even better player. And this laziness (opinion), is one of things I despise.
And though “leadership” is vague, it’s not a stretch to look as his career, his failings, his supporting cast, his highs and lows, etc; and make the easy rationalization that he’s not a good leader.

I simply cannot respect a player who CAN be even better, but isn’t. Or a player who has leaned upon his genetics to allow him to avoid improving parts of his game that require work. IE- a tall guy who’s really only rated highly because of his tallness.
Make Dirk 6’4" and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. There would just be yet another guy somewhere in Germany, home brewing with some hops.
And that’s my point. Yes, he’s good (according to the stats). Yes, he’s often fun to watch. But I don’t like players (ahem,Shaq, ahem) who have gotten where they are solely on a physical condition. There’s no honor in that.

Do you feel the same way about Yao Ming?
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
Yes.
But I like Yao personally a hell of a lot better, so I’m quiet about it. Plus, with all that Yao’s dealing with it doesn’t seem fair.

If he was 6-4 I guarantee that his game would be nothing like it is. His jump shot is too good. Its not a gift he had when he was born. It is something he developed. If he was 6-4 he would be a great passer or a great slasher or something else.
It would be nice if he could post up, but can anyone do everything? Could David Robinson shoot like Dirk can? Can Duncan? Or Snaq? Or any other big? NO. That is why you cant ask Dirk to post up like they can.

this is an interesting question. some of the players on rival teams i “hate” the most (nash, nowitzki, gasol, sheed) are some of the ones i think i would like if i actually knew them. not met, but knew.
This is SUCH a great (and huge) topic, so I’m not even gonna get into it.
I’m just gonna continue admiring Denver’s collapse.

Sometimes I imagine a scenario where I am placed in a blank room to have a nice dinner and discussion with a basketball player — no icebreaking required, no need to associate before or after the conversation, and no time limit or minimum. Just a full on conversation over some dinner. Chillin’ out.
There are a lot of guys who I love watching (eg LeBron, Deron, Crash) who I would probably absolutely hate doing that with. Can’t imagine having a good conversation with those guys. It’d probably ruin my ability to enjoy watching them. Then there are players on teams I like who I love watching (Duncan, D-Rob, Nash) and who I think would probably be fantastic in that kind of a setting. Those guys are special.
But then there’s the last group, the players on teams that I absolutely despise but who would probably make it impossible for me to hate them if I was in that sort of a situation. Gasol with his pretty incredible humility and smarts, Kobe with his ridiculous work ethic, Ray Allen with his generally being an awesome person, etc. Sometimes I stealth-root for Gasol in spite of the Lakers just because I like the dude so much.
It’s hard work, being a hater.
i said it before, i’ll say it again. i’ll do anything (well almost) to have dinner with the barry family. or the waltons.

You are too harsh. The man has an amazing jump shot, no matter how he shoots it. I dont think his game is selfish either. Yesterday he was passing the ball and finding the open man amazingly well. He would get into the paint and find the open man for a three. That is why the game was so close.
The man is a warrior and is consistent. If you take him out of that Mavs team Im not sure they would get to the playoffs.

He never wins the big game and never makes others better; his game is selfish and disgusting to watch for someone who really understands and enjoys the game of basketball.
Okay. Other than the ‘disgusting to watch’ comment (which is clearly subjective), can you argue against any other point or provide evidence against it?

Not really. The games I have watched he can definitely pass the ball but I cannot reach a definite conclusion because I do not watch enough Mavs games. On game 4 he found Terry wide open (damn you Parker) for the three more than once I believe and he did it while driving and being defended pretty intensely.

i think the problem is dirk’s basically a 7 foot two-guard who relies on fadeaways and BS foul calls to get his points. he’s just not the kind of guy who’ll completely take over a playoff game the same way a dominant big (duncan, duncan, duncan) or a real slasher/scorer can (manu, kobe, lebron).
plus he is the worst defending 7 footer in history.
If Dirk were the second best player on his team, that team would be purrty good.

Lauri doesn’t know that yet, I’m afraid. Either that or she believes the naysayers.
That said, when my cousin was younger, she loved “Lord of the Rings.” So much so in fact, that she wore the shirts and the jewelry. She was a “Lord of the Rings Nerd” if there ever was one. I was still in my 20s at this time and just tolerated it because, you know, she’s blood.
But one day when I heard her speaking some gibberish that she called “Elfin, the language of Lord of the Rings;” I called her retarded.

Yes, but bastard and lame and idiot have roots in insulting people too. People get all worked up about one word and ignore others.
Stupid can be used to refer to a mentally challenged person if that is your intention.
Most of the time when people say retard they’re saying the idea is really stupid.
When people choose to be offended are a particular word they immediately create a double standard because they’re ignore other similar, hurtful words.
At the end of the day, it’s all about intentions, and you can say something 10 times worse using nothing but exquisite prose.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
i’m not offended by the word “retarded,” i just think it’s dickish to use it that way. context matters here, and the fact is that in current English usage, “retarded” is a derogatory term for someone with a developmental disability. bastard, lame, and idiot don’t have the same connotation.
i don’t use it, and i don’t go out of my way to find rationalizations for using it, just like i don’t go out of my way to find reasons to give myself permission to use homophobic or racial or even, yes, ableist slurs (no accusation here, just for clarification).

Okay, since you guys are my Internet buddies, I’ll tell you where my “retarded” pet peeve comes from.
People here use “mogólico” – that’s “mentally retarded”. Lady who used to work in my house had a retarded son. I once called my brother that: “mogólico”. In front of her.
Mom took be aside and explained why it was wrong. I loved that woman (not my mom, the other woman), she was a second mother to me, and I couldn’t help but wonder how she’d feel about me using her son’s condition as an insult. So nowadays I always think of people who have a retarded son.
I don’t bother people about it because I know it’s only it’s a product of my mother’s teaching. As I said, I even remember the scene to this day. (I was 6?) So I know it’s common, it just bothers me a little. But I don’t hold it against people when they use it.
And that’s all I have to say about that. /forrest
I smell death... everywhere.
in English, I think it’s actually “mongoloid,” which pretty much everyone agrees is a nasty thing to say to someone.
Well, it’s a common insult here. We don’t have a “retarded”. “Retrasado”, maybe, but it’s not heard.
I smell death... everywhere.

They don’t have that meaning now, but they used to have.
You know what would happen if saying retarded was frowned upon by everyone and rarely used? It’d be a hell of a more powerful insult.
Take the “C” word, it’s about one of the only insults that will shock people nowadays. It’s very rarely used.
The problem aren’t insults, the problem is people being insulting. You take away retard, something else will come up, and it will probably be just as ableist as before.
I mean come on, “Mentally challenged” is a joke in an of itself now. People focus on the words because it’s the easy thing to point out, but what that really does change nothing at all.
That’s the whole point of PC language, superficial shallow change without any true difference.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.

well, i don’t think that’s really the point of “pc” language (though the etymology of the term ‘politically correct,’ which began its history in american english as an ironic term used by the left, is very interesting.)
the point is that words do matter. i’d say that in modern america, they matter more than the reality they refer to, a lot of the time. superficial, shallow things are basically what constitute our entire cultural and political reality.
/dork
Words matter but intentions matter even more. Frowning upon certain words does nothing but mask the problem.
Not to mentioned sometimes PC language is even more offensive than the original thing. I never understood how “little people” was supposed to be the PC thing to say.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
yes, but the agreed-upon method by which human beings communicate and recognize intentions is language, so i don’t think you can separate the two in a meaningful way. there isn’t a real difference between the mask and the problem, at least when you’re talking about language shared by large groups of people.
besides, i don’t see how not calling LD’s friend’s son a nasty name is “nothing.” it’s not being mean to that kid and/or his mother. what’s wrong with not being mean to someone?
also, the idea that pc language is often “more offensive” than the original thing seems like a stretch to me.
Calling him a retard is wrong, but so would be saying, yeah the kid’s an idiot. Yet idiot is widely used and not frowned upon.
You took away one word but you didn’t do anything to solve the problem. If someone wants to insult a mentally challenged person they will do so using other words. That’s because nothing about them has really changed, only that the person learned using a certain word is offensive, so he doesn’t use it.
The person in this case actually told LatinD why it was offensive for him to use that word. LatinD actually learned something, he wasn’t just told, “Don’t use that word!” just giving it more power.
Although one can make the point that by being offended by the word retarded, you’re actually strengthening the connection between the word and those who are mentally challenged.
PC language like African American or Little People is beyond stupid. They let everyone feel good by being sensitive when in reality no one has done anything meaningful.
Words have power but it’s always about what people mean when they say them. There will always, until end of time, be insults. That’s because people want to insult. Nothing’s gonna change that. You can either be offended and extender their power and staying power, or they can be used so much that they eventually have no connection to their original meaning.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
i think you’re making a couple of assumptions here that i don’t agree with. one is that people who don’t want other people to use racist or ableist or whatever words don’t care about the underlying reality, but only the words themselves. i don’t think that’s really ever the case. people care what words people use because as you say, words have power: they reflect a reality (discrimination, hatred) that some people want to change.
plus there’s a bit of reductio ad absurdum in saying that someone who would frown on calling someone a “retard” would then say it was okay to insult this person by other means. this formation seems to have a lot in common with the “liberal hypocrite” meme which like all good stereotypes has a grain of truth to it but is not nearly as prevalent as people like to make it seem.
i do think your point about appropriating language and trying to rob it of its power to injure (cf. “queer,” which is a positive term of identification for many people now) is a good one, but again, context matters. it’s certainly not an argument for being able to use hateful language whenever you want, without regard for its effect on people who maybe aren’t considering the issue in as nuanced a way as you are, and without anyone being allowed to call you on it or disagree with its usage.
But you’re calling it hateful language. That’s exactly the problem. That ends all the debate. That’s the danger of being so easily offended by a word.
I could decide that “lame” is extremely offensive to me. Therefore I would appreciate if nobody used it in PTR. Those who do are using offensive language.
There, it’s done. Who’d want to use offensive language? Who’d want to be a dick and say it after I said it was offensive to me?
By just proclaiming that, I have just made everyone change their way of speaking to suit my needs.
There’s always going to be words that offend someone somewhere. You cannot decide one is okay and the other isn’t when people can be offended by both.
I have no doubts about the way I mean the words I say. Some other people might not believe me, might think I’m rationalizing. But they can disagree in whichever way they want and I won’t take away words from them to do so.
You take away the word retard and yes, a lot of people might be less offended, but the precedent that was just set is in my view more damaging that any word could ever be.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
wow.. deep shit.

this is a different argument.
i’m talking about the reasons for a person (me, in this case) to choose not to use certain words, and why i think other people should choose to do the same thing. i’m not talking about “taking away” words, i’m not talking about prohibiting any kind of speech. there is an important difference between saying “i think you shouldn’t” and “you shall not.”
i’m not interested in trying to prevent people from saying anything because, as you say, there’s always going to be someone who’s going to find a way to insult others. however, i am very interested in having conversations about why people feel compelled to use those words that i disagree with using. i hardly think that can be called “ending the debate.”
you answer your own question about “who’d want to be a dick” if you let it be known a certain term offended you: somebody would do it, for whatever reason. but then, would you not want someone else to speak up if they agreed with you and thought it wasn’t good to use that language?
I’ve found out that in life, sometimes it’s not worth typing walls of text in a blog at 1 am.

You’re don’t want to take away words but you do call it hateful language, that’s extremely powerful too. Most people self-censor anyway. It’s not like words can be banned, one of the greatest things about this country is the rock solid belief in freedom of speech.
I feel compelled to use the words because I have always used “offensive” words. It’s the way I speak, the way I like to express myself. Almost all people do this, except I also use words people have deemed almost extra offensive.
I like the way they sound, most of them. I like their pronunciation and I like that they’re an extremely effective way to convey an idea.
I like explaining why I use them to show people I just don’t use them for the hell of it.
Most of all, if I were to be offended by one word, I’d have to constantly scan public opinion and be offended by other words too. I’d have to be offended by a never ending list of words and I’d have to keep on top of the latest PC language.
I refuse to give power to those who are offended by changing the way I speak, because if I do then they have won. And if they win they won’t stop at one word, or two or three.
Most of all I worship at the altar of freedom of speech. Although it does not apply here it does in real life, and I will never accept a group, any group, taking away words from another group just because they happen to find it offensive.
As I have said before, it’s about the ideas for me and not the words. Words are “offensive” because they can be used to express offensive ideas, when they’re not, then they’re not offensive anymore.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.

I thought it was a good discussion, too, and I’d actually like to continue it in another forum (or maybe in a DTOUR thread or something), because this sort of thing is my bread and butter, and I do see merits in virtually any position that can be taken on the subject. Which makes the whole thing like trying to nail soup to the wall or punch smoke or something. Bad for my blood pressure; good for my ’brane.

Guys, settle down. How many years have we said this EXACT same thing about phx, with each successive year justifying it with, “but this year they’re even better?!”
A. Lot.
Phx’s game is not built for the postseason, pure and simple. First round doesn’t mean anything (and yes, even for us); anyone can look good in the 1st (especially versus a VERY depleted lower seed), kindof like any psycho chick can be perfect on one given night.
I’m salivating over phx. Good thing there’s still one more W that need now though.

I see what you’re saying but here’s an example of the way I see it.
I had to shoot and produce a video documentary for a client. The video was sort of a “play this after I die” type of video for his dying father. The interview was going great except for the fact that during a very emotional moment, the father farted. Yep, he tore ass. Even though what he said was amazing. There’s no way I could include this segment in the video. Use some discretion is all I’m saying.

That’s a really good way of looking at it. Just seems like it could have been handled a little better by someone other than Reilly.
And this is Karl’s 2nd battle with cancer and I think they said his son had it too…that’s just rough. So any hope it could have provided is a good thing.
i certainly don’t think there’s anything shameful about having a disease, but i myself would never want such an intimate view of my private life broadcast for the entertainment of people like, well, me. then again, the whole idea of a private life hardly exists anymore, does it?

I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
So, I had an iPod playlist going in my ear when it happened, but… did anyone else(like, say, the announcers) think the flagrant on RJ was BS?
REVENGE!
The one on Blair was worse. Either way, I’m glad the playoff vet and rookie understand how to give a playoff foul. No and-1 especially after the cheap shot from Najera.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I didn’t agree with the call on RJ, but think the one on Blair was legit. Blair definitely gave and extra push down with his arm after he could not get the ball. Think he was just pissed about the foul on Manu and wanted to show the Mavs that we were going to stand our ground.
Perhaps. All I saw was bigger and stronger man fouling a smaller guy hard who was going up to score. Kind of like Duncan fouling Butler in game 2. Kidd wasn’t injured nor did I see Blair’s foul as cheap or excessive. Maybe it was but without the previous few game minutes of fouls I think that goes as just a hard foul. I would’ve found it interesting if JVG has been commentating what he would’ve said since he does not hide his feelings on these things.

What’s almost as bad is that Najera was high-fiving a couple of Mavs fans as he walked toward the tunnel.
I saw that too, and actually (and sadly?) caught myself wishing that we had passionate enough fans that would have drenched him with beer and showered him with pretzels. And maybe even urine.

Mrs. SiMA used to know him (through mutual friends) when he first started, and said he was the nicest guy you’d ever meet, very humble and down-to-earth and fun-spirited. She then watched as he (says she) became just like every other pro, and became greatly egotistical and selfish. He’s always a sore subject because of this- she gets sad.

for grad school, then work. my job involved driving all over the state, in all kinds of weather. i remember i got stuck in casper on june 5th one year for two whole days and i was this close to burning the I-25 holiday inn express to the ground. i mean, casper is just bearable when it’s nice out.
i hear you on the wet spring snow, too. it slushes up the highway during the day and then freezes overnight and it’s just a nightmare. plus in spring/fall you have people from other states hauling ass on the roads when by all rights they shouldn’t even be out there.
My favorite is always the opposite- the (usually tourist or newbie) that drives exceptionally slow in an effort to be incredibly safe… only it’s in fog…. and he ends up creating MORE problems and backed up traffic, or worse as people come up behind him too quickly, on ice.

What a bizarre, bizarre game…. I have to agree with Dirk, if you’d told me that The Big Three scored 31 points total and nothing else about the game, I’d be in a week-long funk.
But instead, it’s Dallas that’s in a funk… you know they’ve got to be wondering, “What do we have to DO to beat these guys?” Nowitzki, Terry, Dampier, and Barea might even be like that pot of geraniums (“Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”) thinking “Oh no, not again!” — the flashback to the 2007 first-round playoff series loss to eighth-seeded GS has got to be brutal.
Kudos to GH, RJ, Dice, Blair, and the other role players, who really came thru and gave the Birthday Boy a most excellent present! That’s got to give them tons of confidence going forward; this game might turn out be the equivalent of the Rodeo Road Trip in past seasons.
But shame on me for getting ahead of myself. The Spurs are up 3-1, true, but Dallas is still in the same position of needing to hold serve at home and win one on the road. The only difference is that they now have to do it in three consecutive games… at a time that their confidence has to be shaken, if not shot, and at a time the Spurs are playing with passion, ferocity, and will to win that is truly beautiful to watch.
The only thing that I got right about the game was to predict the “been there, done that” factor… that the Spurs wouldn’t panic and fight back to win the game, and that Dallas would lose their composure as their implosions in previous years would chip away at their confidence when things went badly for them. Dallas sportswriters have all but written off the Mavs, and have pointed out the difference in mental attitude between the two teams:
Spurs know how to win, Mavs don’t; it’s that simple
This isn’t about effort or desire or any other intangible. This is about the Spurs, a franchise with championship pedigree, finding ways to win, while the Mavs, a franchise with a history of choking in the playoffs, finds ways to lose.
The Mavs didn’t give the game away, the Spurs punched them in the jaw and took it. San Antonio increased its defensive intensity and watched as the Mavs wilted under the constant pressure.
The Spurs have won four championships since 1999, so they expect to win. They understand how to do it. They realize the total commitment it takes to win in the playoffs, where every possession matters.
Mavericks can learn lesson from Spurs in team ball
From the Mavericks’ perspective, this lost weekend in San Antonio was anything but festive. They gave away two games that they could have won, maybe even should have won.
The reason Sunday was a matter of one team keeping its cool and the other bordering on panic.
The Spurs were behind by 15 points in the second quarter and somehow, you just knew they were going to scrap and claw and get back into the game.
The Mavericks were down 13 points in the second half and somehow, you just didn’t get the same feeling about them.
There’s a reason this happened. Allow Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to explain.
“We let them know there was about a day and a half left to play,” Popovich said about what he told his players during a timeout when they were behind by double figures.
“We wanted to make sure they were concentrating on one play at a time. But we said that if we tried to hurry it or do things too fast or have one guy trying to be a hero, it was going to be an ugly night.”
When it was the Mavericks who were down double figures, the same sense of chipping away seemed lost. They got close, but this is a team that in the past has acknowledged that it has a tendency to try to do things individually.
I need to see what you’d do with your own FanPost. I like your style.
"We'll see how our character is," guard Tony Parker said. "We don't have time to be sad. Nobody cares. It's just us. We're the only ones who can help each other."
