Spurs @ Mavs: Game 1 Second Half Thread
The refs are being generous with the whistle (for the Mavs), Dirk can't miss, we've got Crisco on our fingers, and we're only down five. I don't know if this is good or bad. Discuss amongst yourselves.

We shot 57% but only took 4 threes? Only 3 fts, 11 turnovers. What the hell is going on?

thus making a very good adjustment on the offensive end in the 2nd half—-keys
don’t turn the ball over—-if u can’t help it only once or twice but not thrice
and go to the charity stripe!
and let dirk score 82—yeah he’ll beat kobe and the rest of his team 30.
that might do it
while we are playing defense and team ball

Since everyone is pretty much freaking the fuck out, I have decided I will post some relaxing aquascape pictures for this series.
These are the top three planted aquariums in the world, in the “Large” category.
1st place and best in show.

2nd place.

3rd place and a disappointment to his family and friends.

I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
The 2nd one looks a little messier, but I kinda like it better than 1st place.

win the rebounding battle.
let’s get Marion in foul trouble early cause apparently they think Kidd is their next best defender for Manu.

Mason ,FOCK.
But the real stat is all of the stupid turnovers in the first half. And the thing is, they have been doing that for a while now. Even during the win streak it seems….
Screw the offensive rebounding, all you need to know is the Spurs committed 11 turnovers. Many of them unforced…

Stop complaining about the officiating. It’s bad, but Salvatore is always home-biased. We should be happy we’re even in the game. We should be losing by 15 with the FT discrepancy, in addition to our TO’s and bad misses. Just be happy we’re in it at all, it’s game one and on the road.
Stop sounding like Suns fans damn it. We’re better than that
and only 4 or 5 calls have been egregious. We also haven’t been nearly aggressive enough to warrant many calls on DAL

Why yes, I believe I will. I don’t give a flip what Suns’ fans sound like—I’m going by what is happening in this game, and the touch fouls have been ridiculous. Ridiculous.
Could we be playing better? Yes. But look at the numbers and tell me that the refs aren’t playing a major part in the outcome. And I rarely, if ever, blame the refs.

It’s okay, Dirk played great and we were fantastic other then those turnovers and lack of rebounds. Will get game 2.
I thought McDyess did the best job on D on Dirk, and was strong on the boards. Hopefully he can stay out of foul trouble next game.
Same, but once McDyess is gone that’s when the trouble begins. Bonner couldn’t defend his clone and Bogans believes hugging Dirk’s leg stops him.

Well, I’m going to try to take the positive spin on this game. Other than shooting well, we did not play well. Except for Dice (and the brief glimpse we got of Blair), our role players did not show up. There is no way Dirk shoots that well on Wednesday, plus I won’t be able to watch the game. Pops rotations might have screwed us again. In the 3rd he decides to foul Damp, but then keeps in an offensively anemic line up. Where was Gino during this time when Dallas made their run. The entire offense needs to run through him.
And I guess Hill is still hurt.
If kid didnt hit that 3, it was a one possession game. But I think the spurs kinda said “fuck this,” which seems out of character.
Definitely out of character. What did we have to lose? This is playoffs baby. If anything, it’s a good learning experience if this happens again later in the series. You think we’d give up like that in game 7?
by richbruiser on Apr 18, 2010 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions
I’m fine with Bonner playing. Mase and Bogans, not so much.
And hope this settles the debate a bit and calms the tides on the “we need to trade TP since George Hill is ready to take over.” Seeing how he was a huge no show.
I agree. Just one game. But still sucks since it was Dallas. And we hate Dallas.
I think George is still hurting. Hopefully, a few more days rest gets him back to normal. Tony played well tonight. The only trade talk I want to hear is in ALL CAPS.
Why did we reduce ourselves to hack-a-damp in the third quarter? We’re suppose to be a good defensive team and we’re fouling with 3-4minutes left?
Well when the guys are focused, their rotations can be solid. With the Mavs you have to rotate on shooters. But does anyone actually think Nowitski is gonna have 35 every game.

I didn’t like the changed we made int he fourth quarter, to double team Dirk. That just left a lot of three point shooters alone and that was our death. We played great, just couldn’t pull out a win.
by SpursGerbil on Apr 18, 2010 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Two reasons:
1. We were in the penalty and they were calling every bit of imagined contact so why not send Damp to the line to miss a FT instead of Dirk for a guaranteed two?
2. It disrupts the offense and flow of the game. When you trail you want to disrupt the team in the lead.

Offensively the Spurs were good. They shot a high percentage as the result of good execution and they still missed quite a few layups. Rebounding was poor, the turnovers were too many considering Dallas is dangerous in transition and Nowitzki treated the game like a shootaround. Butler was also solid.
As for the free-throw discrepancy, I don’t blame everything on it but in a six-point game being +13 at the free-throw line matters.

Emphasis tonight on getting back so as to not allow any open 3s. You give up the occasional offensive board to assure no easy points on the other end. That they were 5/14 from 3 says it worked.

Man, last night sucked for me. I was in my apartment, minding my own business watching some NBA, when rain water suddenly began coming in through the front door. I didn’t notice for who knows how long, until I was going to get a drink and there’s water all over the kitchen floor.
The building has closed hallways, and I’m on the 2nd floor of a 6 story building, so it was one of the biggest WTF moments I’ve experienced. There was close to an inch of water in the hall, all coming from this middle patio area, which apparently has no drainage. I just want to know who the hell designed this damn building. Needless to say, they won’t have any more of my money.

Yeah. I called the fabled “emergency maintenance” number, and the lady said someone had called about it already and that people were “on their way” to deal with the problem. 3 hours later (~11 pm) the maintenance guy calls me and asks if the water is still there (as if it’s supposed to instantaneously evaporate). I tell him yes. He says they’ll be there soon. No one ever shows. I call in the morning at ~10 pm to tell them the water was still there. They say the “water extraction company” will be there within an hour. This “company” is 2 Mexican guys with 1 mop & bucket between them.

Dirk had a great game; tip your cap. Kidd had a great game; just don’t leave him open from 3. Butler had an excellent game. This plus the officiating oddity of 34-14 FT disparity and the Mavs, on their home court, 48% shooting (in the face of usually excellent D on Dirk), 13 offensive boards and 17 Spurs turnovers (most unforced) and they won by six?? We got this folks, we got this. Only one game.

The ball needs to go through Manu. He had 26 but it didn’t feel like he put his stamp on this game. Is it because of Parker?
Want to know how I feel about the loss? It was completely expected, and my prediction remains: Spurs in 7. I fully expected Dallas to be fired up and win the first game on their home floor. In fact, I thought it would be worse and un-aided by the officials, so I’m encouraged if anything.
There won’t be a 34-14 FT disparity in every game, and we’ll actually rebound the ball in the future.
REVENGE!
The free-throw discrepancy, the rebounds, the turnovers, Roger Mason getting minutes, Nowitzki going bonkers and Butler playing effectively…still, the Spurs had their chances to take the lead. The Spurs execution on offense was terrific. They just need to get something from either George Hill or Richard Jefferson and that might’ve been enough to win Game 1.
Asked before the game how Parker has looked, Popovich said, "He’s still cute. "
I figured it would be a great shot for the Spurs to steal one, since the Spurs had the entire lineup against the Mavs for the first time in years. And also since we were very rested. = /
The Spurs = Not your granddaddies 7th seed !
BTW: Me had more points in the paint (50-34) and only one fewer made 3pt shot. The difference? FT line as if you had to ask. Will the experts mention this when analyzing the game? Likely not.

No one will argue with you there. It happened at least twice with Bonner. The reason Dirk went nuts: we cant breathe on him without getting a foul called. Thats why we started foulng Damp. B/c if it was going to be a foul anyways we would rather have Damp shoot.

And I don’t want more calls for our guys just fewer for Dallas. It’s the fricking playoffs. If a ref is not 100% sure then call nothing. I’d rather a ref miss a call than assume a call. Let the guys play. If the Mavs don’t like minimal contact, tough. If they don’t like being guarded tell them to stick to the regular season or get the Suns in round 1. I’m fine with touch fouls on us being uncalled if the same applies on the other end.

On top of that, Dirk always thinks he’s fouled. I will never understand that mentality. I guess that’s the difference of playing professionally and playing pick-up games where there are basically no foul calls. It usually takes someone getting decked to call a foul. I wish the league was more forgiving.

In the first game for all series, here are all of the FTs per team. In parentheses next to the number of FTs is the average number of FTs per game in the regular season. When you look at the set, it is obvious that somebody got screwed.
Bulls – 11 (23.9) 46% of normal
Cavs – 17 (26.6) 64% of normal
It was called as “playoff basketball”. Cavs got a few more than expected.
Bucs – 17 (20.4) ) 83% of normal
Hawks – 19 (23.3) ) 82% of normal
A little under regular season calls for both teams.
Heat 13 (23.5) ) 55% of normal
Celtics – 28 (25.5) ) 110% of normal
Miami got the short end of the calls in this one. Six intentional FTs at the end leaves the Celtics with 22 (86% of normal).
Utah – 32 (27.2) ) 117% of normal
Nuggets – 28 (30.6) ) 92% of normal
Near regular season calls.
Thunder – 24 (27) ) 89% of normal
Lakers – 22 (24.2) ) 91% of normal
Near regular season calls.
Bobcats – 28 (26.6) ) 105% of normal
Magic – 27 (26.5) ) 102% of normal
Near regular season calls
Spurs – 14 (24) ) 58% of normal
Mavs – 34 (22.8) ) 149% of normal
Worst called game of the batch.
Take out the 6 intentional FTs on Dampier, leaves the Mavs with 28 (123% of normal).
Take out the 4 FTs given to Spurs after the game was already decided, leaves the Spurs with 10 (42% of normal).
Portland – 31 (24.8) ) 125% of normal
Suns – 16 (25.8) ) 62% of normal
Ten intentional FTs at the end leaves the Blazers with 21 (85% of normal).

The shots Dirk made tonight wouldn’t matter who was guarding him. Bowen. Captain Jack. Artest. Sometimes a great player has a great game where everything falls. Some of the FTs were BS but when Dirk is taking contested fade-away jumpers you gladly live with it. Can you imagine Ian guarding Dirk with that officiating crew? Dirk would’ve have another 25 FTA game.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Okay so I had to watch the game just a bit ago Tivo’d.
I was very nervous and also psyched about this game.
All in all I like our effort, definitely a playoff level of play from our big 3. I haven’t even looked at the box score yet, but I was impressed with Parker. Ginobili obviously was great. Timmy was very solid, but had a few very careless turnovers.
Problem is, it’s 5 players to a team, not 3. We should have had this game. With a little help from RJ and Mason, and a few less turnovers, we would have.
So here’s my keys to our sad loss:
1. The refs sucks. Amazingly generous calls to the Mavs the whole night, other than one call we got, Blair taking the charge with maybe a foot on the line (couldn’t tell from replay angle if it was or his heel was up).
2. Mason FUCKING SUCKS BALLS. He singlehandedly cost us at least 10 pts on offense and defense.
3. RJ sucks.
4. Hill didn’t show up. I hope he does in game 2.
5. Did I mention MASON SUCKS. I really hope Pop ONLY uses him for hack-a-Damp in game 2.
That about does it. I feel confident we can win game 2, if we have less terrible refs and if anyone besides our big 3 shows up. I don’t feel confident about the series. We really needed this one, and as I said before I think if we lose game 1 it’s just too much of a hill to climb to win 4 in 6. Still possible. Game 2 is now a must win.
Every home team has won so far. Despite some very solid play by the lower seeds in the games I’ve watched. Dunno if this says anything about the way Stern is playing these playoffs, but we’ll see how this progresses as it goes on.
Go Spurs!
If it makes you feel better, it’s not about sinning 4 out of 6. It’s about winning game two. At that point both teams have to win 3 out of 5 with us having h/c. Every game in the playoffs is a separate entity so keep it one game at a time.
