So, here we are again. Likely to face Dallas in the first round of the playoffs, but this time, they'll hold the home court advantage. Dirk, Nutpuncher, Cuban and the rest of the gang are probably feeling pretty good about themselves right now. Let's bring them down a couple of notches, and make sure they know that there is still reason to fear the Spurs. Let's press the old Spurs psychological advantage tonight, so that they know what they're up against. I don't care if it means we have to play Utah in the first round, let's make sure Dallas is afraid of us.

for the record, i’m not down with this little pop mind-fuck. we should be trying to win the game and improve our seed. however it will work out, pop will reap what he sows because we’re getting the mavericks now.
on the flip side, it was funny listening to the mavs announcers stumble and stammer with the last minute adjustment. i am down with that part of it.

Spurs guard George Hill tweaked his previously injured right ankle stepping on a camera man in the first quarter of tonight’s game at Dallas and will not return.
Hill, who missed four games this month with a strained ankle tendon, landed on the cameraman on the baseline after completing a layup with 7:14 to play in the quarter. At the next timeout, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich complained to officials, then screamed at the camera crews under the Dallas basket, apparently convinced they were too close to the court.
The Spurs were already without starters Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, who Popovich opted to rest on the last night of the regular season.

I think the constant berating them over their 0 championships is kind of lame. Everyone knows they never won the championship, and we have 4 in the last 11 years…

There’s a lot of good that came from this game. We should out-rebound them all series. We now know how their new players fit into the system yet they’ve only seen Duncan, Tony and Manu twice in four games (only once in the same game). Advantage Spurs.

wow, warriors only have 6 players suited up…but devean george is fouled out, and chris hunter got injured early in the game, so they technically only have 4 players who can play right now. don nelson aint happy that the refs aren’t letting george back into the game to replace hunter who can barely move.

warriors only have 8 active players. but turiaf and morrow are both injured as well, so they’re only in uniform to make numbers – nelson had no intention of playing them.
then chris hunter got hurt early into the game.
so that reduced the warriors to effectively 5 players. then george got fouled out, and theres a rule that says if you run out of players, the fouled out guys can stay in the game, but every time they foul they incur a technical.
so nelson wanted george to stay in after he fouled out. the refs said no, so eventually nelson put hunter in. hunter could barely move, he got involved in a foul and nelson said “the guy could get even more injured, let me get him!”.
refs let hunter get off the court, but don’t let george come back, and say “you’ve got 2 other suited players, they can play”. nelson points out they’re injured as well, refs say “too bad”.
turiaf comes on, fouls straight away, then limps off the court. then morrow effectively does the same, and finally the refs let devean george back on the floor with his 6 fouls.
and then the warriors still win.

i think the rule is only meant to handle players fouling out, not being injured, so i’m not sure the refs knew what they should do. i think they made the wrong call though…

Late night ramblings about the state of the Spurs
Pop’s gamble not playing Ginobili and Timmy didn’t pay off for us, as Portland amazingly lost to the depleted Warriors.
If we’d won this game tonight we’d have moved to the 6th seed.
Despite what everyone’s saying about how bad the Mavs are, they aren’t going to be easy. If we win it will likely be a long tiring series.
Not that the surging Suns would be much better, but I’d take them over the Mavs right now.
I guess it doesn’t make too much difference, as we’re just playing the Mavs then Suns instead of Suns then Mavs..
But damn. We’re going to have to get through the Mavs, potentially Suns and then probably Lakers now to get to the Finals, which will be damn tough weather it’s Cleveland or Orlando.
Our odds through all that don’t look good. Even the Mavs despite all the shit talking are a much improved team from last year. We’re improved too (w/ Manu) but if I try to be impartial I think we’re more likely to lose. Probably lose in 7. I really hope I’m wrong, and we do have a decent chance. But damn.
It’s really too bad we didn’t win a couple more games and make it to the upper bracket.
The Lakers just have to beat OKC, then Denver/Utah to get to the W. Finals. Would be nice to be in that position.
I don’t think Portland cared about winning once they saw the Spurs had lost. They didn’t play any of their main guys late, with Mills running the team at the end, so a different strategy from Pop that resulted in a win likely brings a different strategy from the Blazers that also would’ve resulted in a win. It’s a wash.
I disagree about who’s better. An impartial view would likely say you’d take a roster with Manu, Parker, Duncan, Hill, Blair Dyce, Jefferson and Bonner over Dirk, Kidd, Terry, Marion, Butler, Damp, Haywood and Berea. One has a series of guys that have won when it mattered. The other doesn’t. The stats say that Dallas, for all their supposed mismatch issues, only shot over 41% and scored over 100 points once in four game vs the Spurs. This despite the various defensive issues the Spurs had early in the season and missing their big 3 in all but one of the four. Sometimes teams match up well and I think the Spurs match up strongly with Dallas.

Yeah I realized after I posted it that duh, Portland probably would have tried harder to win that Warriors game if we’d won.
Point taken about the matchups w/ the Mavs, battle tested, etc. I do still think we have a good chance. But it’s going to be hard. This is probably the best Dallas team yet right now. And you know Dirk is hungry after coming up short …every time so far.
I posted this before seeing the “Pro” analysts predictions, like at Yahoo Sports. None of them predicted upset; they all went Mavs in 7 or 6. Even Kenny Smith who usually seems to have a pretty good grasp of the Spurs and everything else, predicted Mavs in 7.
Our guys are battle tested yeah, but they’re also getting old, have won several championships, etc. One could argue this might make them a little less hungry at this point.
We need to go into Dallas on Sunday and take game 1. Then we have a real chance. If we lose game 1, especially with Pop’s pshyce-out in effect after just barely losing to them w/ Timmy and Manu out, it will be too much of an uphill battle and I don’t think we can do it.
Going to be interesting. I’ll be watching the game with my friend who’s a Mavs fan. :^/
Marcus Camby was scratched after the Spurs lost. Andre Miller only played 9 minutes. LaMarcus Aldridge had a stomach virus the night before, no reason to be a hero in a meaningless game. Most of the game the tallest player on either team was 6’8". Entertaining for the fans but not relevant to any discussion of “what would have happened if Tim and Manu had played”.
