Garrett Temple Pounding the Rock-Solid |
Point Guard Jonny Flynn has a bright future in the NBA and can probably make the All-Rookie 1st team in any other season except this one, which has been dominated by combo guards Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry and Brandon Jennings. Garrett Temple won't make any All-Rookie teams but you know what? As long as he plays tough defense and makes those corner threes with deadly accuracy, Spurs fans will continue to show him the love. Advantage: Tied |
![]() Jonny Flynn Li'l Jonny B. Goode |
|
||
Manu Ginobili We Go Where You Go (WGWYG) |
Shooting Guard It's been an awful, forgettable season for these young T-Wolves but they got great talent on the rise personified by Corey Brewer, who was initially thought to be a bust until he improved big time this season. If only he wasn't playing for the West's worst, he'd probably get a little more recognition for MIP honors. On our side though, is the Master of the Plus/Minus (a whopping +26 vs. Denver), The Bane of Hollinger, Conqueror of All Things Nocturnal and The One Who Holds The Key To The 'Chip. Overall, I think we're pretty good. Advantage: Spurs |
Corey Brewer Sick Dunker |
|
||
Richard Jefferson Need U Tonight |
Small Forward It's been said many times that if RJ's really aggressive, he really adds another dimension to the Spurs, particularly the ability to draw fouls because of his athletic forays to the hoop. Ryan Gomes might be the random player to have a career game tonight, but I still expect RJ to continue his high level of play and win the match up. Advantage: Spurs |
Ryan Gomes Expected Random Player to Play Well |
|
||
Antonio McDyess Playoff-Spry |
Power Forward I'm probably just one of the few who appreciate what Dice has been bringing to the table lately. I hardly noticed his presence during the Denver game but when you look at the boxscore, he scored only 5 points BUT grabbed 9 boards (3 offensive) and handed out 4 assists (3rd highest on the team after Manu and Tony). You'll also notice he's jumping up and down more actively now to get rebounds or alter shots. Thank heavens we really didn't get 'Sheed. For the T-Wolves, the Darko FAIL experiment continues. Advantage: Spurs |
Darko Milicic Mega Bust |
|
||
Tim Duncan Nearing Playoff-Timmeh Mode |
Center Al Jefferson recently left the team for a few games because of "personal issues" and came back against NOLA with a stinker of a performance: 5 points on 1-6 shooting with 3 rebounds for almost 30 minutes of PT, recording a major -29 for the game. The young man will certainly look to bounce back from that and Pop really limit Tim's minutes or not play him at all, so this match up should be interesting. Advantage: Tied |
Al Jefferson Trapped in Mediocrity |
|
||
Tony Parker Speed Kills |
Bench & Role Players So far, Tony's been coming along nicely after missing a month, and I'm not complaining about his bench role (Who is? Maybe Eva.) Matt Bonner 1.5723 has also been bringing a precarious smile to everyone's faces, while Roger Mason's still chasing after his shot. Yep, I think our BAM is playoff-ready. Advantage: Spurs |
Kevin Love Handles |
|
||
Gregg Popovich Wise Guy |
Coach
Kurt Rambis has long been Phil Jackson's disciple of the triangle offense in LA, but with his merry bunch of players, I don't even know if he's using it. Best of luck to him against the most sarcastic man on the planet. Advantage: Spurs |

Keys To The Game
|
Strength of ScheduleThe Spurs get a day off and then make the short trip to Dallas for a seemingly epic close to the regular season. Likewise, the Wolves will get one day rest before closing out their season against the Pistons, full of hope yet again to finally strike lottery gold.
Last Time They MetThe Spurs ran the hapless Wolves out of their den with a 103-85 victory as RJ and George led the way with 19 points apiece.

Where to Tune In
TVThis game will be aired on Fox Sports Network's Southwest affiliates, and of course, if you're in the Twin Cities area, they'll probably have it, too. OnlineAs always, NBA League Pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area.. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate. In fact, nobody can stop you from googling "atdhe". You can also shoot an email to poundingtherockmail@yahoo.com for more assistance. Spurs League Pass audio is still free this year, so check it out. One quick reminder
OKC and POR are going head to head, who are we rooting in this game to give us a good seedings in the playoffs
Good Better or Best
after seeing the Fakers yesterday I think they are the weakest going into the playoffs…….that means we should loose one and okc and win their two.
by spursfan_needs_counseling on Apr 12, 2010 7:38 AM CDT up reply actions
Lakers just lost their way heading into the playoffs and I think it’s still not a good idea to match up with them especially if they have Bynum back.
Good Better or Best
yeah maybe you’r right…..is somewhat of a gut feeling, I just believe the pieces are in place for an upset……and if we pull it out we’ll give us a ton of momentum going forward.

Portland owns the head to head tiebreaker with us and threeway conference record tiebreaker with us and OKC.
Assuming we win….
If OKC wins and Portland loses, it is possible to be the 6th seed – 8th seed but it is more likely we would end up 6th.
If Portland wins and OKC loses, we cannot be 8th but it would be tough to get 6th. OKC will be locked in the 8th seed. If you want LA to play OKC and not us or Portland, Portland is who you want to root for tonight.
Portland is the safe bet, OKC keeps things more open.
Their final games (both on Wednesday):
Thunder play Grizzlies in OKC.
Blazers play Warriors in Portland.
Sidenote: Denver is the only Western Conference playoff team not playing on Wednesday and will have an extra day of rest over their opponent in the playoffs.
Can we still fall to the 8th spot if suppose we win tonight and then lose to the Mavs?
Just cause we're crippled, don't mean we gotta take the crumbs.

Portland-OKC Preview
Cool, then we can focus on the Oden-Durant impact matchup as they lead these rosters against each other. It’s always cool to see two top picks fighting over MVP honors duel.
-
What?
-
Really? Hurt? Traded for Camby?
-
That is a lot of money! He is OLD! Yeah, that was stupid.
-
Good point, desperate times – desperate measures type of deal, but, really, Roy, Aldridge, Durant, and all those good role players….. he does look younger than Oden. That could fool some teams.
-
Who slipped in the shower and what about someone’s grandpa’s naked pictures?
-
Even the coach?
-
Andre Miller signed to be traded?
-
Why is he still there and what happened to Blake?
-
Well, at least they still have Outlaw. What an athletic shooter.
-
Oh. Portland sucks….even more without Roy….
clarification
“Traded for Camby?” is meant to imply “they (Portland) traded for Camby?” and not “Oden traded for Camby?”

I’m really conflicted on Dallas. Part of me desperately wants to play them to get revenge and part of me wants us to play anyone but them.
I’d go into the series really optimistic though.
I think fans are gun shy of playing Dallas due to last year instead of seeing that we do match up well with them now. And much like the Lakers, they’ve played their main players some heavy minutes this season. We can beat Dallas as well as we can beat Denver.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I am more worried with My Little Ponies than I am the Thuggets. MLPs have too much fire power to take on easily in a 1st round series.

More fire power but they also shoot more blanks. They feed off their offense. Contain that by executing our own offense and rotating on defense and they will be had. What lost the previous two games to Dallas, besides not having Tony and Manu in the OT loss, was our turnovers and sloppy defense. Those two have been corrected since then.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
they have been but there are still match up problems. PG is not a problem. Hill can stick to Kidd all day but Beaubois causes issues with his quickness. SG/SF positions are filled by Marion and Butler which provide the possibility of spreading the floor and some decent defense. PF is Dirk who brings his own individual group of problems. Dampier and Haywood fill the paint well and Najera provides some scrappiness. The Jet is good for a punch in the balls and a much needed jump shot at times. Still a difficult series for us if we are not in stride. But yes, you are right, we have fixed some of the problems that was plaguing us earlier

i think we’ll lose unless pop wants to win 51 games instead of 50(cuz pop loves to win against winners and loves to lose with super losers. So i think 80% that he’ll win the dallas game, and it’ll be unfortunate if the 20% is bigger than 80%)
i think spurs 110
minnesota-93
but pop doesn’t want that so go for its reverse.go figure
Magic Johnson on Ginobili:His list is his list(to kenny),You are the most exciting European player that I've seen, period. So forget about his list. His the most exciting, the most exciting.Who you seen dunk like this man right here?

what’s more excitng to watch l.a vs s.a or dallas vs s.a(off course its the rivalry)
plus l.a is weak…i dnt know if they’ll go 2x in the playoff as hard as they want but to tell you since bynum injury and with kobe or no kobe, they’re just weak and i think even if with drew they’ll be weak.and it’ll take it.

I see nobody wants the Jazz. If only we could get Denver, all would be right with the world. Here’s the problem – we have to depend on them to win their last 2 games if we want to play them, and that’s far from guaranteed with their mental fragility.

S.A played well against Thuggets. Chauncy and the Thugs’ honey moon period seems to be over. Birdman is hurt. Martin just come back. So I want them.
For LA, just avoid them if you can. Not the time to be hero here. If they are weak, you won’t see them again. If S.A can really beat them, you can beat them in later rounds. If they are still really good? S.A’s young guys can still earn some playoff experience by beating the Thuggets, right?
Dallas is healthy and ready. And they seems to play their best in the 1st round. So just pick the Thuggets if you can and plan the revenge later.
btw, nice article from Manu – still not decided for the WC but def. going to the Olympics 2012…

That’s a cool article, I never thought he would consider coaching, but he mentions that it might be something that interests him with the fact that he speaks three languages and knows the European style of b-ball. I think the Spurs would be wise to keep him in the coaching staff after he hangs up the sneakers.
I’m sure the FO can benefit from someone like him….pretty funny though he doesn’t like the idea of going to work 8am every morning…and I don’t blame him, lucky 40mil star.
by spursfan_needs_counseling on Apr 12, 2010 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions
I don’t read the article as that he is definitely going to the Olympics. He says he wants to play in the Olympics and would like to play in the qualifying tournament. He doesn’t say he is going to play, but that he wants to play. In my opinion, by using wants, he gives himself an out if he is hurt or the possibility of injury is there.
crap!! wishful reading I guess…..thanks for being a party pooper =]

I’m interested in who Pop will rest tonight if anyone. I’d like Dyce to get one of these last two games off. I’d also like Timmy to either sit tonight or play fewer than 20 minutes; it’s a home game against Minnesota. They’re not Memphis or even as good as the Nets currently are. We should handle these guys and be fresh for the finale and the playoffs which as far as I’m conscerned starts on Wednesday @Dallas.
As for 1st rd preference: Denver, Phoenix or Dallas. I also wouldn’t mind Utah just to prove that the 0-4 was the random exception not the rule, but I worry how beat up we’d be afterward, plus the difficulty or a potential road game 7 in SLC.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
no matter how it turns out, tonite is a must win if we want to stay out of the 8th spot. my best guess is that portland will win out and we will assure ourselves with no worse than the seventh seed after both the spurs and portland win tonite.
after the way the last couple of weeks have unfolded, i’m not so sure that the spurs should have great fear of anyone in the west.
lakers are limping, we should be better than the jazz and denver and phoenix and denver and phoenix.. dallas would be a rivalry type series where anything could happen.
after all the seemingly down times this year, our spurs could well end up with another 50 win campaign. crazy….but none of this matters if we don’t take care of busness at home tonite.
You think Portland is gonna beat OKC tonight? With no B-Roy?
by One4theThumb on Apr 12, 2010 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions
i do. they are at home. they have a lot of guys that can fill in and they just beat the lakers. that means they can do anything, right?
Thanks for the preview, Davis. This game should be all business. I see that you had no comment for BLOLair’s tweet. Why is that?

I am so going to regret this, BUT . . .
I don’t like calling Denver the Thuggets. It just makes me wince. I didn’t like it back when everyone called Portland the Jailblazers, either.
People have been calling Denver “thugs” for 6 years now—maybe longer. Most of the rationales people give for using the term involve pulling up ancient (in basketball years) incidents involving young guys who have since grown up and changed their ways. ‘Melo did "Stop Snitchin’" in 2004, fer chrissake. And whatever you say about Chris Anderson, he’s shown some real strength and maturity since his reinstatement in 2008. What he has done in turning his life around is actually pretty remarkable. “But what about Kenyon Martin?” I hear you say, “and what about J.R. Smith?” I don’t know—anyone heard anything about Smith’s off-court behavior since last January? And as for Martin, well, news flash—neck tattoos and hanging out with rappers do not make you a “thug.” Nor does committing a hard foul on Dirk Nowitzki. And I know he’s a millionaire and all, but still—it’s cool that since Martin joined the Nuggets he’s purchased tickets to every home game for low-income families. For that matter, what about all those guys who play for Denver who never did a thing to deserve such a label?
I’m not asking anyone to stop saying it (and it’s not like I keep track or anything). Just pointing out that it bugs me. And that there are reasons it bugs me. And if nothing else will persuade you that it’s maybe not the right thing to say, perhaps knowing that you’re perpetuating a Mark Cuban whine will. Also? I bet Manu wouldn’t say it. But he might call them the Moonmen.
So there’s my bleeding-heart self-righteous debbie-downer plea. You may commence mocking me. Here, I’ll start.
“Yeah, calling Denver the Thuggets is an insult to thugs everywhere!” (chuckle chuckle)
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
I didn’t cringe before, but now I may.
And it’s also a slight on the tat of Thug Life across my 6 pack igloo cooler
I like Moonmen, because it’s an apt description. I’ve been using “Nuggies” myself lately, as their play lately has not been full-grown. Living in this town, they really aren’t the Thuggets anymore, although I’m sure SiMA will beg to differ. Whatever one chooses to call them, I still want Denver in the first round.

the whole moonmen thing is very funny to me. i think it came about last year when my then 5 year old son asked me if spurs were playing a team from the moon since all the guys playing that night had over-zealously tattoed their arms, faces, heads, etc……he didnt know what to make of it.
i have a strong hate for the nuggets (as i do for many teams out west), so i dont mind thuggets one way or the other. frankly i wish there was something more vile-filled that i could call them……
Thanks for the reminder, haha. I knew the name had to do with someone’s son, but didn’t know it was from yours.

Imagine being a little kid with no desire greater than the burning wish to see a real live NBA game in person, and imagine it’s your birthday, and imagine this is the game your parents decided to take you to on your big special day.
Somewhere in that crowd, a little kid is resisting the urge to say, “Thanks. Thanks, mom and dad, for ruining not only my birthday, but the entire sport of basketball.”
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
But it’s these moments where those parents should look at their son and say to him. “Son, we love you. And out of love we must share this valuable life lesson with you. What you see here… is exactly why you should stay in school. You don’t want to grow up and be an Indiana Pacer.”
