Scott Schroeder from RU(who always does great, great work BTW) gives us some details about our new backup[?] PG.

Defensively, as you'd probably assume, is where he's best. I'm told that, according to Synergy, he ranks as the top defensive point guard in the D-League - obviously why he's the Spurs choice as a call-up. He's not very big (6'3", 190) but he is very athletic and plays the passing lanes quite well - he has great instincts.

Defense? Music to these ears.

Nice. Hope his D works well in the NBA.

Hopefully this is a bit of good news after the travesty of Mason earlier tonight.

I mean, at least this guy can’t be worse than Mason.

You know that’s not necessarily the case.

Mason is an nba player who is here to stay. This guy is still in the d-league. Unfortunately my friend, he could be far worse.

Defense..what is that?

Something that the Spurs used to be able to do back when they were winning chips.

Hey, we’re still winning chips. Potato chips, that is. Suns-like offense = entertaining.

Should we expect a lineup of Jackson, Hill, Bogans, Duncan and McDyess?

Going for the first even year championship!

We need someone that can stay in front of of other guards. Mo Williams and Delonte West abused our defense tonight. Bonner was our defensive stopper. he drew 2 charges

If G Hill cant stay in front of Mo Williams….

Hill can’t keep up with anybody when having to go over/around screens, otherwise he’s a decent one-on-one defender.

by xman130 on Mar 9, 2010 9:18 AM CST up reply actions

+1

That has been a weakness the whole season. I don’t know what Hill is missing about that coverage.

by LionZion on Mar 9, 2010 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed. And off the ball back door cuts. Manu and Hill have been burned a bunch of times.

one reason that i haven’t really considered for this is that our bigs might not be hedging as much as they should be. Lets face it, if a guard is using a screen, and you know that you have to go over the screen even for fear of their jumper but mostly from fear of Pop’s wrath, that guard is going to be in front of you every time. It’s the big’s job to hedge on the pick, or stay low and protect against the roller/screen setter. Most of the time, our bigs, Blair/Duncan never hedge and just stay home and protect from drives. That’s one reason I would give for Hill being beat so many times, it’s not just individual defense that you should look at for the pick and roll, but what the other defenders are doing to.

I still agree though, that’s an area in which Hill could improve in, but he would look much better with a more athletic 5 to help in in the pick n rolls (Think KG/Rondo)

GTFOML!

By the way those “charges” were ridiculous. He was moving forward, with forearms out, as the offensive player was taking off. There have been way too many charging fouls this season.

You can under cut player in mid-air and draw a charge, it’s pathetic.

Actually that other guy lead with his knee. So it was more the fault of the other guy than Bonner assuming a stellar defensive position :P

Sounds like our secret weapon against the Cavs. Pop really thinks about the Finals. Too bad he was not in the uniform to help us tonight.

We should start rebuilding around Durant

by Kondor on Mar 9, 2010 12:46 AM CST up reply actions

Yes, that’s very realistic. It’s more like OKC could offer Manu a deal (Presti) and bring him over with some cash.

It’s true that even if the Spurs got Parker back and made a run, that they’d still need to look toward next year. Duncan’s/Manu’s (if he’s back) window is only a few years. If you can’t get the pieces to work for this year, you can at least get started on next year in the process.

by grego21 on Mar 9, 2010 1:15 AM CST up reply actions

This is true. We do have to start thinking ahead.

The really sad and frustrating part is, that’s pretty much exactly what we were doing nearly a year ago, eventually making the bold moves necessary to take on the elite teams and make another championship run in ’10, bringing in RJ and Dice.

Come to think of it, I got a sinking feeling in my stomach last summer when it became clear we weren’t going to resign Bowen. And it’s been pretty much never left.

by M3D1T8R on Mar 9, 2010 4:09 AM CST up reply actions

as much as i love Bowen…

it was his time. I don’t think he would be much better than Bogans at this point (although he would be better at pissing the other team off, which was a big part of his game).

I do agree with the feeling, though. Trading him, to me, was basically what the cowboys did to Emmit Smith. I had the same “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GUYS THINKING” feeling.

LOL!!!

by SpursfanSteve on Mar 9, 2010 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

How scary would Manu be on the Thunder? I mean, they basically have our championship team already. Collison is basically Nazr, they’ve got an excellent point guard…the only difference is Durant is a 3 and Duncan a 4.

Which i think is the new blueprint for NBA success. You’ve got to have a superstar wing player. Superstar bigs won’t get it done anymore with all the rule changes.

LOL!!!
-Dejuan Blair

by SpursfanSteve on Mar 9, 2010 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

Superstar bigs can always get it done – it is just that there are few superstar bigs around right now. Howard is pretty good defensively but is limited with his post moves. Oden is made of glass.

by swgeek on Mar 9, 2010 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

You’re in my brain. In NBA 2K10, I always trade Harden for Manu and take the Thunder to the championship. I do it for Manu.

Maybe this guy will turn into our new “defensive stopper.” Ya know, since our current one, Mr.Bogans, got lit up by Jawad Williams on 3 straight isolations last night. Not sure what is more depressing…. that we let the Cavs 12th best player beat us last night, or that the Spurs cut Williams like 4 years ago.

by GMac14 on Mar 9, 2010 1:29 PM CST reply actions
