Playoffs: First Round . Who and why ?

The Spurs are almost in the playoff contention....because to be out, really bad things need to happen like

Star-divide

... Menphis going 10-2 in their last 12 games meanwhile the Spurs going 5-10 or...

... Houston going 12-15 in their last 15 games meanwhile the Spurs going 5-10 or..

That kind of scenarios could be mathematically possible but unrealistic. Now the question...and I´m asking you beloved PTRs the reasons why you pick any given option.

Thanks

I’d rather face the Lakers right away and get it over with. Unfortunately, Tony might just be coming back so it isn’t ideal, but I don’t think any of the other teams will be easier. If the Spurs could take out the Lakers, that would provide a great deal of confidence and momentum for further rounds.

Yes! Bring us the Lakers! The last team I’d like to see is Utah. It was painful enough to watch the Spurs got beaten by them 4 times already this season. I don’t want to watch the Spurs losing another 4 games to Utah.

We should start rebuilding around Durant

Remember 2007. the cavs sweep the Spurs in the regular season…. then… Spurs sweep 4-0 and get the trophy

by CarBahia on Mar 21, 2010 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

2-0 sweep is not 4-0 sweep. and we are not going to see Utah in the Finals.

We should start rebuilding around Durant

by Kondor on Mar 21, 2010 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I really think the best time to beat the Lakers is later. Kobe and Gasol have played tons of minutes. If they have a difficult 6 or 7 game first round series with Portland, then a 7 game 2nd round series with Dallas or Denver (assuming they win that), they’re going to run out of gas.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Mar 21, 2010 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

The Lakers (1st seed) are not going to play Denver or Dallas (2-3 seeds) in the 2nd round. If we don’t meet the Lakers in the 1st, as the 8th seed, then we need to win against both Dallas and Denver just to meet LA in the Western Finals. There are two problems with this scenario. First, I don’t believe we can win against both D&D. Second, if we somehow do, it will be us who run out of gas. My theory of the Lakers is that they start sloppy and then get better during the playoffs, as the opposition toughens. That’s why the Rockets were able to push them more than Denver or Orlando. The best plan for us would be to beat LA in the 1st, then play OKC in the 2nd, and Denver in the Western Finals.

We should start rebuilding around Durant

by Kondor on Mar 21, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I expect Dallas (most likely) or Denver to drop to 4th. I also don’t think this Laker team is as good as last seasons version, partly due to the loss of Ariza and partly due to Kobe’s wear and tear.

I don’t expect that we’d run out of gas as Parker will have fresh legs and Manu and RJ are playing better now than earlier in the season. If anything I expect that we will be ascending, if healthy.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Mar 22, 2010 2:05 AM CDT up reply actions

If one of Ds drops down to the 4th, then we’ll need to beat Utah? Utah has been a plague for us this year.

We should start rebuilding around Durant

by Kondor on Mar 22, 2010 2:15 AM CDT up reply actions

For whatever reason, Utah does not concern me. I look at the context and see that they won a close game in SA when neither Duncan nor Parker played. I see the Spurs blew a double digit second half lead @ Utah and still had two end of game shots (Bonner, Parker) to win. They also blew a double digit lead at home in the fourth game. And all where pre-AS Break when Manu and RJ were not at their best and roations had not been setteled.

I think Utah is slow of foot on defense and will be exposed in the playoffs.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I watched Utah games, and they were not pretty. I didn’t like my Spurs in those games. They looked overmatched. For whatever reason, I think Utah has the Spurs’ number this season.

they have the size – DW and the Boozehound seem to feast on Coyote meat this year – plus they will be at home which is always trouble

Picking the Lakers has the advantage of being realistic. The Spurs are likely going to go into the playoffs as the 6th 7th or 8th seed, so realistically we’ll be picking from LA, Dallas or Denver.

Of those, I’d most like to see Dallas I guess. LA won’t be very easy if TP isn’t at 100%, and a first-round torching of JKidd, JJ and Ricky BB

by greyberger on Mar 21, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

…could help him get to that 100%

by CMoney on Mar 24, 2010 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I voted for OKC, because, call me selfish, but I want advance a round this year. Quite frankly, I see OKC as the best chance to do that. We lost to Dallas last year, Utah has man-handled us 4 times, Denver is simply just too much to handle (and also has the best chance of beating LA in the conference finals, so I don’t want them out early), and LA is… LA.

by Ed (dfjmed) on Mar 21, 2010 11:46 AM CDT reply actions

While anything less than a title will be considered a failure, Ed is right. Winning a round would be a decent consolation prize after how bleak things looked early on.

I think the spurs will end up with the 6th or 7th seed though…..

We lost to Dallas without Manu in the lineup. This cannot be overstated enough.

by CMoney on Mar 24, 2010 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I’d like OKC because that would mean we likely moved up to the 3rd seed and have HC plus playing playoff newbies. If we stay in the lower half I’d like Dallas. They’re going to run out of gas and we’d be improved over last year’s squad with all the pressure on Dallas this time.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I voted the Lakers, because if we’re gonna lose, I want it to be fast. Like removing a bandaid. And if we win, the morale boost might give us our new championship.

I smell death... everywhere.

I say, bring it Spur lovers! (Although it would not surprise me if we lost on Wednesday now that I think about it. Oh well.)

Hey, it was really Manuwar’s F-bombing my Lakers that I was responding to. But I can’t wait. Since Bynum is out, just wait until Blair gets “MBENNNNNNGA’d”! They’re gonna be calling him “Little Baby Blair”. Plus Sasha Vujacic is back so you know he’s going to be bringing the . . . well whatever it is that Sasha brings. (I mean besides Maria Saharapova and all.) And rumor is that Luke Walton will be back for the playoffs – you know he can get all up into RJ’s melon (and I’m talking about his brain you pervs).

And we are on an impressive 6 game win streak that includes majestic single-digit victories over the Warriors, Kings, Twolves & Wizzlies. (I hear we were particularly unimpressive during the 2nd half of the Wizards game. I stopped watching after the 1st quarter because the game was so damn boring and meaningless.)

So bring it Spur lovers!

Thank you for rubbing this in. Also, don’t forget the best record in the West, 1st seed, home court against every other Western team, extra 2 games in the Staples’ during a regular season, friendly whistles and Jack Nicholson in the stands. You guys are loaded, or should I say, spoiled?
