Spurs @ Magic Game Thread

San Antonio Spurs at Orlando Magic, Mar 17, 2010 7:00 PM CDT

Wow, we're 65 games in and there's a team we still haven't faced yet this season. And this is a team that seems to be hitting their stride at just the right time, if you ignore the second half of their last game.

Sound familiar?  Read on.

Also, get the view from the Magic fanbase at Orlando Pinstriped Post.

Star-divide

Our guys are also on a roll lately, but scared us when they almost lost a huge lead last night.  Still, we've been on a pretty nice run lately.  Let's ask a former Spur what he thinks of San Antonio's 8-1 record in its last 9 games.

Image badly blatantly photoshopped from Boston.com & Getty Images.

Likely Starters

Spurs

(40-25)
Position
Magic
(47-21)
George Hill PG Jameer Nelson
Manu Ginobili SG Vince Carter
Richard Jefferson SF Mickael Pietrus
Tim Duncan PF Rashard Lewis
Antonio McDyess C Dwight Howard

Officials

Bob Delaney Mark Lindsay Rodney Mott

Key to the Game

Perimeter Defense - Dwight is going to destroy us on the interior - that's a given.  But, if you take away his help, the Magic are vulnerable.  Crisp, decisive rotations and timely help defense - like we saw during most of last night's game against Miami - will be the key to whether or not the Spurs can put this one in the "W" column.

Watching the Game

This game will be aired nationally in the US on ESPN and ESPN360.  Please don't post any illegal feed links here.  Spurs Radio is here if you want to listen to the game.  If that's not working, or if you're looking for a video feed in your area, email us at poundingtherockmail@yahoo.com.

Here are Orlando’s last games against playoff teams:

Loss to Charlotte by 7 in Orlando
Win over Lakers by 2 in Orlando
Win over Miami by 16 in Orlando
Win over Cavs by 6 in Orlando
Loss to Mavs by 10 in Orlando

Those are the only 5 games since the ASG, 5, all at home. In 2010, they were 12-10 going into the all star break. We’ve played 4 since the ASG, winning against OKC and PHX in SA and @ MIA, but dropping a gift @ CLE.

I turned the game on last night when the Spurs were up by something like 29. I turned the game off once the lead got down to double digits and kept it off until I checking the final score and assuring myself that we were in the clear. Then I watched the post-game coverage.

The question tonight—should I start watching from the get-go? Should I wait until the second half? Should I stay far, far away from the television and let them have an easy win? Should I reiterate that I don’t believe in mojo, so screw it, I’m watching the game if I want to? I’m so torn. . . .

I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.

by Lauri on Mar 17, 2010 4:28 PM CDT reply actions

My advice (to be taken or left)…….

Screw it and watch from the get-go. Know that in the event of a loss, however, I will hold you personally responsible for ruining my wednesday. Retaliation may include, but is by no means limited to—tarring/feathering and open mockery on whatever street you happen to be.

Consider yourself warned. Proceed at your own risk!

by silverandblack_davis on Mar 17, 2010 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I voted maybe in the poll. It very well could be a turning point if we play well for 48 minutes and RJ has another good/strong game. If he disappears/disappoints then it’s the same old, same old.

I wonder if Duncan or Ginobili or both sit. I doubt both would sit, but wouldn’t be surprised if Duncan did.

by Spurlady on Mar 17, 2010 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

Honestly, I feel like the Magic are one of the teams in the league that the Spurs can’t beat. They are built similarly but are younger and more athletic. Shard is a better version of Bonner. Carter is a slightly better version of Jefferson. They have no one for Manu and Howard is younger than Duncan. I still like our chances, but I’m expecting to lose.

by thedooj on Mar 17, 2010 4:37 PM CDT reply actions

I think you made the point I was going to make. They don’t have an answer for Manu. He’s our X-factor. Lewis is theirs, and quite frankly, our is better. I see this going how games against the Suns go. Howard will have a big night, just like Amare does and nobody else will go off.

by Big50 on Mar 17, 2010 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Carter = Manu
Pietrus = Bowen

Neither of them is as good, mind you… but they do similar things.

I expect/hope to see tonight:
- a lot of missed free throws by Howard
- a lot of made free throws by Duncan/Manu/RJ
- Mahinmi dunks on one end and his fouls on Howard on another
- Bonner making and Lewis missing 3s
- fouled out Howard
- Carter frustrated by defense
- angry Ginobili taking over the game

Who will have a higher total?

Dwight Howard – points

Duncan is leading with 84.5% of the vote.

If the Spurs don’t double Howard like they’ve done the past few years will win easy. Let Howard get his and stay at home on the shooters. The Suns analogy works but Jameer can’t break down the D like Nash can so its really a worse (offensively) version of the old Suns.

And RJ has to attack the paint mercilessly.

I guess if we HAD to have a crappy 5 to 8th seed ( lookin quite possible) ..it would be nice to upset one of the two toughest teams right off the bat in Denver or the Lakers …

Silver has a point in wanting to play the Mavs first so Parker can get his bearings. But im afraid we will need him even against just the Mavs in the first round.
