Spurs @ Heat Game Thread
San Antonio Spurs at Miami Heat, Mar 16, 2010 6:30 PM CDT
Let's hope the Heat don't remember that beatdown we gave them on New Year's Eve. Or that they're Psychologically Devastated by it.
And now, one of my favorite bands from my college high school days.
Likely Starters
![]() Spurs (39-25) |
Position | ![]() Heat (35-32) |
| George Hill | PG | Carlos Arroyo |
| Manu Ginobili | SG | Dwyane Wade |
| Richard Jefferson | SF | Quentin Richardson |
| Tim Duncan | PF | Michael Beasley |
| Antonio McDyess | C | Jermaine O'Neal |
|
|
Officials |
|
| Scott Foster | Sean Wright | Gary Zielinski |
As of this writing, it's not clear if Beasley will be playing tonight, so if he's not, Miami's PF slot will likely be manned by Joel Anthony.
Final Note
Please don't post any illegal feed links here. Spurs Radio is here if you want to listen to the game. If that's not working, or if you're looking for a video feed in your area, email us at poundingtherockmail@yahoo.com.

2nite is probably the most important game (so far) of this season.
We should start rebuilding around Durant
Miami will be tougher than Orlando because they know that Charlotte is gonna win against Indi 2nite, and if the heat losses this game, they will be a game behind Charlotte and just 2 and a half games to be out of the playoffs. Instead, Orlando has almost no problems with its 2th place in the east
For those people who have us finishing 6th/7th and winning 11 of the last 18 games, I don’t see it. Many of the good teams we are playing are involved in playoff races themselves. I count 4 teams that we should beat, 3 teams where we shoud have a good chance and 11 where we are going to be large underdogs. If we win 3/4 of the shoulds, 2/3 of the good chances, we still need to win 6/11 of the large underdog games. I would love to be wrong, but I don’t think it is going to happen.
Wow, early afternoon game. Even for east coast games right?
Going for the first even year championship!
But game time was half hour ago…wait, isn’t 7pm over there?
Going for the first even year championship!
Nope, daylight savings time started this week. We here in AZ are 3 hours behind the east coast now.

I still think we can do ALOT of damage. A few things stand in the way. Parker’s health but he’s resting = silver lining. Chemistry = improving. Defense, turnovers = Improving. Lakers height and the crazy talent that some other teams like the Cavs and Magic have but we’re contenders again. This reminds me of when I believed in the Spurs in 2008 when people said they’re too old and slow and they beat New Orleans down 3-1.

Haslem gave a very impressive audition tonight to supplant Bonner at the “4.” He will
be a free agent and should be on the Spurs’ radar for the MLE. He’s always been a decent medium-range shooter, but more importantly, is a rugged defender and
rebounder, in marked contrast to the soft Bonner. Whatever Bonner has provided
offensively lately is fool’s gold. He is unadulterated garbage. I don’t want to hear any comments about how he “stretches the floor.” So does Scalabrine for Boston and so
did Danny Ferry for us several years ago. Stretching the floor is a euphemism for
someone who can hit an occasional “3” ball but doesn’t play a lick of defense and
does not rebound. Duncan is going to desperately need some help up front in the
form of someone with tenacity to combat the Lakers and Clevelands of the world,
particularly with Dice getting old.
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
I’d explain but I’ve reached my limit on writing internet comments about why Matty B is good. Any other topic, please!
Lakers almost got taken to OT last night against Golden State. Tonight they’re 49-48 against the Kings… could be interesting if they lose and go to 3 games ahead of the Mavs and Nugs.
Meanwhile, the Suns are leading the Twolves 79-61… at the HALF…
To greyberger: Since you imply that you’re the ultimate authority, why hide your knowledge and wisdom from the world? Please enlighten those of us in the unwashed masses who have not benefitted from your profound knowledge why, in your warped
judgment, Bonner is good.
shamelessly copied from one of my previous defenses of the Rocket:
Despite this season’s injuries, and limited playing time, Matt is fifth in the NBA among frontcourt players in 3pt % and tied for second in makes per minute. His efficiency and volume puts him in the company of guys like Rashard Lewis, Danilo Gallinari, Peja Stojakovic – guys who get big minutes, big money, regular rotations, and plays run for them.
What makes Matt different and better than our other 3pt shooters this year or last is this combination of efficiency and volume. When you put in Mason (or last year’s Bowen or Udoka) you don’t get the same effect because they get chased off their shot easier. Bonner just shoots over smaller guys or outruns bigger guys and can reliably get good looks just by setting a screen or running through traffic to the other corner.
This year Matt attempts 7.9 3pt shots per 40 minutes, 4th in the NBA. Mason takes 7, Manu 6 and Bogans 4.3, but they’re not shooting much better than league average. Hill is but attempts just 3.5 per 40 min. RJ is a sad sad story – he attempts the fewest of all our 3pt shooters but also shoots the most poorly.
3pt shooting in basketball is like hitting in baseball: adding good players make the others in the lineup perform better. When Bonner is on the court he becomes the #1 threat from range. It’s not just about spacing for Tim and the dribble penetration. Manu and Hill perform better as the 2nd or 3rd ranged threat with less defensive attention on them when they’re hanging back or making cuts back and forth to the 3pt line.
He’s one of the best at the thing he does, which is obviously of value to every team in the league. If he could play defense and rebound better he would be getting 12 million a year somewhere, not the 3.25 we can afford.
Here’s a not so brief recap of the Sean Elliott/Bill Land interview with Manu after the game:
Bill: Manu, terrific performance. Got a little scary there for a while? Didn’t it?
Manu: It did. We really turned the ball over too much. The third quarter was awful in that regard. And the whole game we had 21 turnovers. So that’s the only reason why they came back. And we were like scared the last quarter. So, good that we step up, we make some shots and the defense was really solid.
Sean: Well, two things Manu. First off, your reaction after you hit that big three. Was that more out of just being fired up or the fact that you were forced to shoot that ball with the shot clock running down. In that situation it didn’t look like you were too happy.
Manu: No, I wasn’t. I was a little frustrated. We were not getting anything out of the offense. We were being kinda soft with the ball. Turning the ball over too much. We know Wade is really good at it… at going at the hands. And we were not ready at that point to…. Instead of taking it to 10 like they did, go to 30. … So that was a little frustrating and that really like made it all come out.
Sean: So your little talking to in the huddle. Looked like you took over the huddle a couple of times. You were letting your guys basically know you gotta be tougher with the basketball. You gotta bear down a little bit.
Manu: Definitely. That was the big key. Because defensively we were great. We did a very good job on Wade, on the shooters, on everybody.. But, when you turn the ball over like that, two against one, there’s nothing you can do against him. So we had to be strong, we had to execute better. That’s what I was trying to communicate with the guys.
Bill: Well you mention the defense, you hold them to 39% shooting. You made Wade earn everything. Until some of that transition stuff. So over all that’s a pretty good picture to take a lot of postives out of here.
Manu: Definitely, definitely. We are very happy the way we played D. They were at 44 with a few minutes to go in the 3rd qtr. and that’s when we start giving them the ball and say do what you want . And that’s when they made the run. But I think we gotta be pleased with the way we played D… moved the ball, especially in the first half. We really moved the ball well. So it was a good game, we just had a little let down, in the late third.
Sean: Now talk about your body right now. Because when you crossed over and you went down the lane for that dunk, it didn’t take you a long time to gather. You were off the floor pretty quickly. That tells me you have a lot of spring in your step, you’re feeling good, your legs are undernearth you.
Manu: I told you Sean, in the bus. I told you that it was coming. Aahhh, I was saving them for the last stretch. No, I’m feeling good. I’m feeling fresh. As I told you before, I’m really attacking the rim and I’m feeling that I can go by bigs or over bigs. So, it’s a good moment and I’m feeling confident and getting better every day.
