Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

Edit by TimC: Looks like Fin is being released to sign "elsewhere" before the playoffs. Hopefully this means more Hairston.

It should also be mentioned that the Spurs are required to have at least 13 players on their roster, and they will have to sign someone within the next two weeks.

by Manu ex Machina on Mar 1, 2010 1:47 PM CST reply actions

It depends if he clears waivers and/or gets picked up by another team. But the short answer is that we still pay him and he still counts against the cap.

- DBG

by LasEspuelas on Mar 1, 2010 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah. I thought it was structured so that Cuban pays him over a longer period than the original contract. So our bill to resign him was only 2mil per season or so. Maybe I got it all wrong.

by LionZion on Mar 1, 2010 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

He was actually waived by the Mavs in 2005 and cleared waivers (nobody was going to pay his original salary). We signed him as a free agents which allowed the Mavs to off-set part of his salary from what we gave him (negligible amount). The Mavs had Finley against the cap until 2007-2008 and a total of 51.8 million since he was released in 2005. I think we resigned Finley in 2008 for a two year contract worth about 2M a year.

"If an expert says it can't be done, get another expert"
- DBG

by LasEspuelas on Mar 1, 2010 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

I believed is the other way around. He was released with “Allan Houston” one-time, at-that-time-only chance given by the league in 2005 that allowed teams to release players so they don’t count against the cap although they keep playing them the remaining of their contract. That is what allowed the Spurs to pick him up on the cheap.

Going for the first even year championship!

by Sh!fty on Mar 1, 2010 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

there might have been an exception to help the mavs but im pretty sure that finley cleared waivers because there was at the time competition between the heat and spurs for michael’s services

by LasEspuelas on Mar 1, 2010 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

Actually you are correct in that Finley was waived under the amnesty clause and therefore did not count towards the Mavericks tax calculation. He did however count towards the cap.

Great role player; quintessential Spur. I’d be surprised if anyone picks him up though. I remember reading this sometime back

Daniels, who also drew interest from Memphis before Tinsley signed with the Grizzlies on Saturday, is now hoping to rejoin San Antonio — the franchise he won a title with in 1999.
Given Parker’s injury, might not be a bad security blanket. Szczerbiak might also be a possibility, if he’s healthy, given our 3pt shooting woes this season. Although long-term I’d prefer a young big.

He could have just done it the vintage way and had a press conference, or posted it on SAEN’s blog or something. Thinking of Billy Ocean eagerly Twittering his “fans” just strikes me as comical.

We either sign a 3rd string PG or a bigman, but I expect the Spurs to take the whole two weeks to save some money

we don’t need a 3rd string PG. we already have a 3rd string PG (Mase), who doesn’t get minutes, because there are three guys in front of him to handle the ball. neither do we need a big man. we already have a big man (Mahinmi), who doesn’t get minutes, because Pop wants to play small ball.
it would be nice to get some 3, who could defend and shoot some 3s. it would be nice to get Big Z, but it seems to be very unlikely.

You think Daniels is a better defender than Bogans? Or just that his scoring would make up for it?

Also, could this team handle having more than one Antonio on the roster?

Funny you should mention that… I got this from Wayne a while ago:

It should be worth pointing out that by releasing him the Spurs save $2.5 million on the luxury tax. It’s a mutually beneficial move in that the Spurs save a lot of money. I guess he wasn’t interested in sitting the bench as well. Bonner and Mason are both in the same boat where they are costing the Spurs a LOT of money not to play.

I’d look for the Spurs to sign Alonzo Gee of the Toros and then immediately assign him back to the Toros. He’d be a minimum cost player for the Spurs mandatory 13th roster spot and it would give them his rights. As Malik Hairston told me yesterday, “Alonzo knows he belongs in the league.” He didn’t say it in a “Alonzo is that arrogant” way but in a “Alonzo has that much talent”

If we have not used the amnesty clause then we might be able to do this although I dont know if this clause is still available. If it is, Finley might be the only player to be waived twice under the amnesty clause.

I think the mavs would be very intelligent to sign finley. They need a tall swingman who can knock down 3’s in limited minutes. I think Finley has a place in the league, one that sees him play 5-10 minutes on a contender.

I really hope we do not see Fin in the playoffs. Remember his dunk against Dallas when he head-butted the ball? He holds grudges. Crap. If we see him, he will swing at least one of the games. The guy is not afraid of the big shot. I wish the Spurs would have never signed Bogans and kept Bruce; this would not have been an issue.

Regardless, I have always been a Finley fan. I am impressed when players are able to adapt their game in such a way as to allow them to be effective after they lose some of their athletic ability. Finley is a warrior and I hope he does not find his way on to a contender.

My thoughts exactly.

I will miss Finley. In my mind a perfect Spur with his mental toughness. He gave us a hell of a lot of clutch 3’s. I’m sad we never got to see much of him this year, out w/ the injury and then never really had enough of a chance to get back into his shooting groove since he’s been back.

I wish him luck with whatever he ends up doing, if he does get picked up by another team when he gets picked up by another team, and otherwise.

I hope I’m wrong, but I can definitely see him signing with the Mavs.

This is a complete aside. But the “Ballhog” guy on 48minutesofhell sure reads like GhosTown. It made me crack a smile seeing him dominate the comments section of their posts with profound statements like “Something stinks in SA and I know what it is. Pop and Buford.” Lmao.

HAha. Damn, the guy is a pitbull. And he lives in a fantasy. He cites Scola as an example of a good player who couldn’t stand Pop or some weird shit like that. He must be living half in this world and the rest on his yellow submariine.

That is so funny you mentioned that Lion, because I just got done reading the post on 48MOH and couldn’t believe the stuff “Ballhog” was posting. Just looking for a reason to fight with people. I was going to reply to his comments, but realized it wasn’t worth it.

I also liked his “factful” statement that we should take a page from the Mavericks and Rockets, since we are not “winners” anymore. Clearly with all their Championship banners, they know how to win more than we do.

Similar tone but I think they’re different people. GhosTown has posted under the GT name at 48MOH before. But I can’t remember for sure if Ballhog was active then, so it’s possible after a few posts over there GT evolved himself into BH.
