Spurs Waive Michael Finley
Edit by TimC: Looks like Fin is being released to sign "elsewhere" before the playoffs. Hopefully this means more Hairston.
It should also be mentioned that the Spurs are required to have at least 13 players on their roster, and they will have to sign someone within the next two weeks.

Roster spot for Big Z!
Not going to happen, but might as well call him while he’s waiting 30 days.
Innnnnteresting.
And a pretty clear sign that the FO has not “given up on the season.”
Good for them.

Well yeah, most senior citizens hate to be bothered. Kind of surprising to hear he was as D&B with all that noise and flashing lights. One of the rookies probably dragged him there.

With Dice on the team, there was just too much old rubber face for the Spurs to handle. This is why our season went to hell.

Does being released like this mean we still pay him his full contract, but no longer have to deal with luxury tax on that salary?
"I like the fact that he’s a man." – Hubie Brown on Blair
It depends if he clears waivers and/or gets picked up by another team. But the short answer is that we still pay him and he still counts against the cap.

I think that was aover a couple years ago.
Spurs Basketball. Improving [other] NBA teams since 2010! - swgeek
Yeah. I thought it was structured so that Cuban pays him over a longer period than the original contract. So our bill to resign him was only 2mil per season or so. Maybe I got it all wrong.
He was actually waived by the Mavs in 2005 and cleared waivers (nobody was going to pay his original salary). We signed him as a free agents which allowed the Mavs to off-set part of his salary from what we gave him (negligible amount). The Mavs had Finley against the cap until 2007-2008 and a total of 51.8 million since he was released in 2005. I think we resigned Finley in 2008 for a two year contract worth about 2M a year.
"If an expert says it can't be done, get another expert"
- DBG
I believed is the other way around. He was released with “Allan Houston” one-time, at-that-time-only chance given by the league in 2005 that allowed teams to release players so they don’t count against the cap although they keep playing them the remaining of their contract. That is what allowed the Spurs to pick him up on the cheap.
Going for the first even year championship!
I love the timing of the “WE ARE HIRING” ad below this fanshot on the frontpage.

But only if its under 6’10, 30+ years old, and nonathletic enough for Pop. That last part may take some time.

On the waiver wire: Devin Brown?
According to reports, Devin Brown could possibly reach a buyout agreement with the Chicago Bulls.
If that were to occur, I think the Spurs could sign him since he has previous knowledge of the system and was last seen actually making three pointers with New Orleans a few weeks back.

Great role player; quintessential Spur. I’d be surprised if anyone picks him up though. I remember reading this sometime back
Daniels, who also drew interest from Memphis before Tinsley signed with the Grizzlies on Saturday, is now hoping to rejoin San Antonio — the franchise he won a title with in 1999.Given Parker’s injury, might not be a bad security blanket. Szczerbiak might also be a possibility, if he’s healthy, given our 3pt shooting woes this season. Although long-term I’d prefer a young big.
Farewell, Michael. You got a ring with us. You sent G1 against the Suns into overtime in the ‘08 playoffs. You won a game (after the buzzer) last April, and you came out firing at the beginning of the season. A bum hammy stole 25 games from you, but we’ll always remember you for your clutch shooting, your age, your veteran court presence, your lack of lateral quickness, your resemblance to Billy Ocean, your age, your reanimated dead status, and most of all — your age.
Godspeed, Mr. Finley, and fare you well.

We either sign a 3rd string PG or a bigman, but I expect the Spurs to take the whole two weeks to save some money
"He was just a young skinny guy who looked like a winner. We didn’t know he was going to be as good as he is."
—Popovich on Manu Ginobli
we don’t need a 3rd string PG. we already have a 3rd string PG (Mase), who doesn’t get minutes, because there are three guys in front of him to handle the ball. neither do we need a big man. we already have a big man (Mahinmi), who doesn’t get minutes, because Pop wants to play small ball.
it would be nice to get some 3, who could defend and shoot some 3s. it would be nice to get Big Z, but it seems to be very unlikely.

Funny you should mention that… I got this from Wayne a while ago:
It should be worth pointing out that by releasing him the Spurs save $2.5 million on the luxury tax. It’s a mutually beneficial move in that the Spurs save a lot of money. I guess he wasn’t interested in sitting the bench as well. Bonner and Mason are both in the same boat where they are costing the Spurs a LOT of money not to play.
I’d look for the Spurs to sign Alonzo Gee of the Toros and then immediately assign him back to the Toros. He’d be a minimum cost player for the Spurs mandatory 13th roster spot and it would give them his rights. As Malik Hairston told me yesterday, “Alonzo knows he belongs in the league.” He didn’t say it in a “Alonzo is that arrogant” way but in a “Alonzo has that much talent”

I think the mavs would be very intelligent to sign finley. They need a tall swingman who can knock down 3’s in limited minutes. I think Finley has a place in the league, one that sees him play 5-10 minutes on a contender.

I really hope we do not see Fin in the playoffs. Remember his dunk against Dallas when he head-butted the ball? He holds grudges. Crap. If we see him, he will swing at least one of the games. The guy is not afraid of the big shot. I wish the Spurs would have never signed Bogans and kept Bruce; this would not have been an issue.
Regardless, I have always been a Finley fan. I am impressed when players are able to adapt their game in such a way as to allow them to be effective after they lose some of their athletic ability. Finley is a warrior and I hope he does not find his way on to a contender.

My thoughts exactly.
I will miss Finley. In my mind a perfect Spur with his mental toughness. He gave us a hell of a lot of clutch 3’s. I’m sad we never got to see much of him this year, out w/ the injury and then never really had enough of a chance to get back into his shooting groove since he’s been back.
I wish him luck with whatever he ends up doing, if he does get picked up by another team when he gets picked up by another team, and otherwise.
He would be. As JRW clarified they need to be waived before the 1st of March. They can be signed after that.

That is so funny you mentioned that Lion, because I just got done reading the post on 48MOH and couldn’t believe the stuff “Ballhog” was posting. Just looking for a reason to fight with people. I was going to reply to his comments, but realized it wasn’t worth it.
I also liked his “factful” statement that we should take a page from the Mavericks and Rockets, since we are not “winners” anymore. Clearly with all their Championship banners, they know how to win more than we do.
